TEAMS: Blues make three changes, Tigers get a boost

The teams are in for Thursday night's game in round one

CARLTON has dropped recruit Liam Reidy after one game for his new club, while Blake Acres is also missing for Thursday night's game against Richmond.

Reidy, recruited from Fremantle in the off-season, played just 61 per cent game time against Sydney last week and has been replaced in the Blues' side by fellow ruck Hudson O'Keefe.

Acres (shoulder) was a chance to return after getting through a VFL game last week, but he's been left out, although Lachie Cowan (calf) and Matt Carroll (hamstring) have been recalled.

Adam Saad (hamstring) and Ashton Moir (omitted) are the other outs for the Blues.

V'landys said Miami, Hong Kong, Tokyo, UAE and London loom as potential locations for future NRL fixtures.

The 2026 NRL season gets underway on Sunday afternoon with a double-header in Las Vegas. ABC Sport will live blog both matches.

The NRL will decide in the next three months whether to charge towards a global round, with gradual year-by-year international expansion the likely model.

The NRL hasn’t been shy about their plans to globalise the code. They’re like the property owners with the best house on the street – complete with great renos and good extension plans – but deep down they just want to move streets.

They’ll struggle because their direct rival, the 15-man code, is already established and could deliver an international TV audience of 20 million per round of the new seven-round Nations Championships, which starts in July and concludes in November.

After heartbreak for fellow Australian flag-bearer Jakara Anthony, Matt Graham will look to make amends and claim the nation’s first medal of the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Anthony was the gold medal favourite but, showing how moguls can turn in an instant, erred in the women’s final to finish eighth of eight runners.

Australian Olympic champion Jakara Anthony has kept her stunning Games record alive, making it five rounds of competition unbeaten after she topped moguls qualifying in Livigno.

Four years ago, Anthony also opened with a bang in qualifying and then swept through the next three rounds en route to Australia's first women's moguls gold medal.

The 27-year-old joined her fellow opening ceremony flag-bearer Matt Graham as the two Australian skiers to bypass the next qualification round, with the 2018 silver medallist grabbing the 10th and final spot in the men's event earlier on Tuesday.

One in three Aussie investors may quit, renters squeezed | PIPA

One in three property investors say they could quit the market if the capital gains tax discount is cut, as a rate rise bites into borrowing power and rental supply fears grow.

One in three property investors are preparing to quit the market as a radical federal tax grab threatens to bridge the rental crisis.

It comes as fresh interest rate pain wipes up to $23,000 from the average family’s borrowing power.New research from the Property Investment Professionals of Australia shows investor nerves are already influencing behaviour, even before any policy is locked in, with warnings that further sell-offs would deepen Australia’s rental crisis.

How capital gains tax changes could impact you

Back in late 2024, as the federal election campaign was at its height, Treasurer Jim Chalmers ordered Treasury to run the numbers on the impact of scaling back some of the lucrative concessions to capital gains tax.

Somehow, this was leaked, paving the way for the treasurer to dismiss that anything was afoot.

Now, it's on again. This time, following another well-sourced leak, it could form the centrepiece of the next federal budget in May.

Once again, the idea, while not being absolutely ruled out, has been downplayed.

Shrinking season three review – Harrison Ford is the best thing about this unapologetically soapy show

This warm, inoffensive but undeniably mawkish comedy about a therapist is cosy but preposterous. Sometimes it’s like the excellent Ford is in a totally different programme

Such is the surfeit of TV offered up to us in the streaming age that there are whole shows featuring A-list actors that only two of your friends have heard of and even fewer are watching. A case in point: Apple’s Shrinking, a dramedy from the creator of Scrubs and Ted Lasso about a grieving therapist who, rather than merely nodding and looking sad, decides to get brutally honest with his patients.

Michael J. Fox was so moved by ‘Shrinking,’ he asked his former ‘Spin City’ boss for a part

This is read by an automated voice. Please report any issues or inconsistencies here.

The call from Michael J. Fox didn’t need any punching up. It arrived after he began watching “Shrinking,” the Apple TV comedy co-created by his former “Spin City” boss Bill Lawrence that features Harrison Ford as a therapist adjusting to life with Parkinson’s. The actor, who was diagnosed with the disease at 29, was moved by the depth and nuances he felt in the writing and performance.

“It’s so human and it was accessible for me,” he recalls thinking. “I know what that is.” And, so, he called Lawrence roughly a year ago, once he burned through episodes, to say as much. But this being Fox, he slapped it with the sort of wry delivery that long ago made him a master of comedic timing.

Cathy Wilcox’s cartoon (7/1) is disgraceful for three reasons:First, it implies that the calls for a royal commission after the Bondi massacre is a machination of Benjamin Netanyahu. The myriad Australians calling for a commission are functioning adults, who are quite capable of making up their own minds about what is required after the Bondi massacre.Second, it implies that a malign external power is behind the calls for a royal commission. After the Christchurch massacre no one stated that the ″⁣Muslim lobby″⁣ or international Muslim leaders influenced Jacinda Ardern’s swift call for a royal commission. She did so in 10 days. The families of the bereaved in Christchurch were very relieved that this happened so swiftly.Third, the cartoon depicts the ancient antisemitic trope that international Jews are interfering with local politics. This is blatant antisemitic racism. The widespread hatred of Benjamin Netanyahu, and of Israel, is blunting many Australians’ capacity to see what is required after Australia’s worst terrorist massacre.Shame on you.Pia Brous, Armadale

‘Offensive’ cartoon demeans those calling for a royal commission

According to cartoonist Cathy Wilcox, calls for a royal commission into antisemitism are nothing more than the Liberal Party and its enablers marching to Benjamin Netanyahu’s drum, the various business leaders, sports people, etc, who have called for it nothing but useful idiots for the political right (Letters, January 7). So why not hold a royal commission? The various objections raised – takes too long, costs too much, won’t achieve anything – are all general objections, applicable to any and all royal commissions. So are the objectors saying we should never have them? If not, why not? I presume they (Wilcox included) are not saying that this case is not serious enough to justify such a move. If they are, perhaps a reminder is due: Australian citizens have been murdered; they have been murdered because they are Jewish; the murders are the culmination of a two-year spike in antisemitic incidents, causing Jewish schools and places of worship to employ security measures not needed by any other minority group. Bondi did not come out of the blue – Australia has a serious problem. It needs to be addressed, and addressed by the most thorough processes available. If a royal commission is not the answer, what is? Stephen Buckle, Glebe
