Runs, timing key as Patterson continues to push Test case

International ambitions still burn bright for NSW left-hander as purple patch rolls on with first century of the summer

Kurtis Patterson could hardly have made a better start to a summer that may yet reopen a door to Test cricket.

While it's been more than seven years since his last appearance in the Baggy Green, the NSW left-hander was surely among the players shortlisted by Australian selectors when considering how to replace injured duo Cameron Green and Josh Inglis.

Former teammate Moises Henriques certainly thinks so, given the rationale provided by head selector George Bailey for Nic Maddinson's surprise call-up for the first Test against South Africa in what was his first first-class match in more than 18 months.

The case for Kurtis: Patterson pushing for Test recall

It’s been 2,815 days since Kurtis Patterson last wore his baggy green, but Adam White believes the drought could be over soon.

Patterson currently sits on 117* at stumps on Day 1 in the Sheffield Shield match between Western Australia and New South Wales.

The New South Welshman is in a rich vein of form in the last 12 months having posted some big scores in both red-ball and one-day formats.

His current average of 38.85 in Sheffield Shield has been highlighted by 15 centuries, now 16 following his current knock.

Patterson batted at six in his Australian Test debut but could be in line to play higher up the order having predominantly batted at three for New South Wales.

Test hopeful passes Tubby in reminder to selectors

Ahead of the Test summer, Kurtis Patterson has reminded Australian selectors he’s ready and available with a brilliant Sheffield Shield ton.

Patterson ended day one on 117 not out against Western Australia after a strong top order performance from NSW.

Ollie Davies backed up his double century in the last Shield match with 52 while Sam Konstas returned to form, hitting 71.

Jack Edwards (31) and Lachlan Shaw (61) provided support for Patterson too as he made his way to a 16th first class ton.

The left-hander also went to fourth on the NSW Sheffield Shield run-scorers list, taking Mark Taylor’s spot.
