    What it’s like to travel with a weak passport: ‘There’s no dignity’

    International tourism sells the promise of a borderless world: open skies, new horizons, the freedom to explore. But for the holder of a weak passport, that promise rings hollow.

    The Henley Passport Index (HPI) ranks the world’s passports by the number of destinations their holders can visit visa-free. This may be affected by factors like a country’s economic and political stability, colonial history and association with risks or terrorism. Singaporean passport holders currently top the list, enjoying visa-free access to 192 destinations worldwide. Afghan nationals, at the other end – only 23.

    In a recent study, my co-author Samira Zare and I explored the challenges that tourists with low-ranking passports face at airport borders.

    The arrest of two Samoan men in Vietnam over the murder of an Australian crime figure has shocked people back in Samoa.

    Vietnamese police arrested Joseph Va'a and Steve Tofa for the murder of Lorenzo Lemalu who was shot dead at close range on a busy street in Ho Chi Minh City last Thursday.  

    Lemalu was a suspected leader of the Coconut Cartel crime syndicate in Australia.

    Samoan police says they're also investigating whether any crimes may have been committed locally in connection with the murder in Vietnam.

    Authorities in Hong Kong now have the power to demand access to personal electronic devices — including passwords — from anyone entering or even transiting through the city’s airport.

    Under changes that took effect last month, refusing to surrender a device or disclose its passcode is a criminal offence under Hong Kong’s national security law.

    More reinforcements could be on the way as the Sixers play the surging Hornets in a game with playoff implications.

    The Sixers are coming off a blowout WIN (haven’t been able to type that much this season), taking down the Chicago Bulls 157-137. Now they head to Charlotte to take on one of the hottest teams in the league in what could be a pivotal matchup with real long-term stakes.

    Why does a regular-season game in March carry this much weight? The Sixers and Hornets have already met twice this year, splitting the series 1-1, making this the decider. Whoever wins clinches the tiebreaker between two teams hovering around the same spot in the Eastern Conference. Charlotte sits one game back right now, and with how close these records could finish, that tiebreaker is very much in play. A Sixers win adds cushion. A loss pulls the Hornets right into striking range.

    Sixers enter crucial road trip with tiebreakers and playoff positioning at stake

    The Sixers, Hornets, and Heat are all part of a bunched-up portion of the standings where, entering Saturday, only two-and-a-half games separated fifth place and 10th.

    By late March, Trendon Watford had typically begun planning an early offseason vacation. He spent his first four seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers and Brooklyn Nets, who were already out of playoff contention at this point in the season.

    This year, Watford acknowledged, “everything is different.” He and the 76ers are preparing for arguably their most consequential road trip of the season: a Saturday visit to the Charlotte Hornets, before a Monday matchup at the Miami Heat. Those two games will break the Sixers’ regular-season head-to-head tiebreakers against Charlotte and Miami, and could go a long way in determining their ultimate positioning in a crowded Eastern Conference standings with nine games remaining.

    Corporate Travel Management will continue to pay its departing chief executive Jamie Pherous for six months despite growing anger among shareholders that the travel services giant has failed to correct accounting errors that have seen its stock unable to trade for five months.

    Corporate Travel chairman Ewen Crouch said the board had decided it was “time to accelerate the transition to a refreshed corporate structure that consistently meets the expectations of its stakeholders”, appointing chief commercial officer Ana Pedersen to replace Pherous.

    Founder of travel empire exits amid $150m overcharging scandal

    Corporate Travel Management founder Jamie Pherous  has left the company amid an overcharging scandal in the UK. (Corporate Travel Management)

    Jamie Pherous, the founder of the multi-billion dollar Queensland travel empire Corporate Travel Management, has resigned amid a scandal involving the overcharging of clients in the UK by about $150 million.

    Mr Pherous will remain with the company for six months as a consultant.

    The company's chief commercial officer Ana Pedersen will replace Mr Pherous as acting CEO while a "comprehensive search" is done to find his permanent replacement.

    Jamie Pherous, the evangelical founder of Brisbane-based travel business Corporate Travel Management, has left the company amid an overcharging scandal in the UK potentially worth more than $150 million.
