Trump’s divisive address to the nation, annotated

A version of this story appeared in CNN’s What Matters newsletter. To get it in your inbox, sign up for free here.

President Donald Trump tried to hit the reset button with Americans on Wednesday night by reminding them of the Biden administration and arguing his own policies have driven down prices and made America great.

It was a factually challenged address that reads like a screed. It may appeal to Trump’s MAGA base, but it isn’t likely to convince moderate and independent voters who are worried about the economy.

CNN’s Fact Check team took a run through the speech, but I went line by line because much of what he said was not fact checkable and it’s important to try to follow his train of thought.

This Is What Presidential Panic Looks Like

Donald Trump delivered a fear-drenched rant live from the White House.

The president of the United States just barged into America’s living rooms like an angry, confused grandfather to tell us all that we are ungrateful whelps.

When a president asks for network time, it’s usually to announce something important. But tonight, Donald Trump did not give anything like a normal speech or address. He was clearly working from a prepared text, but it sounded like one he’d written—or dictated angrily—himself, because it was full of bizarre howlers that even Trump’s second-rate speech-writing shop would probably have avoided, such as his assertion that inflation when he took office was the worst it had been in 48 years. (Why did he pick 1977 as a benchmark? Who knows. But he’s wrong.) He read the speech quickly, his voice rising in frustration as he hurled one lie after another into the camera.

Donald Trump's envoy to hold Ukraine peace plan talks at Kremlin

Donald Trump's overseas envoy Steve Witkoff will hold talks at the Kremlin next week as the US continues to push for a deal to end the war in Ukraine.

The visit, which was confirmed by Vladimir Putin's close foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov on Wednesday, comes after Ukraine said it had reached a "common understanding" with the White House on the outline of a potential peace deal.

On Tuesday, Trump said he had tasked Witkoff to meet the Russian president, while the US Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll was being sent to Ukraine.

It follows the emergence last week of a 28-point draft plan, which the US president said had since been "fine-tuned, with additional input from both sides".

Trump envoy Witkoff reportedly advised Kremlin official on Ukraine peace deal

Steve Witkoff spoke to Yuri Ushakov on territorial control and suggested congratulating Donald Trump and framing talks more optimistically, audio recording suggests

Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff told a senior Kremlin official last month that achieving peace in Ukraine would require Russia gaining control of Donetsk and potentially a separate territorial exchange, according to a recording of their conversation obtained by Bloomberg.

In the 14 October phone call with Yuri Ushakov, the top foreign policy aide to the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, Witkoff said he believed the land concessions were necessary all while advising Ushakov to congratulate Trump and frame discussions more optimistically.

Kai Trump, granddaughter of US President Donald Trump, trailed the rest of the field by four shots after a 13-over round of 83 in her LPGA Tour debut.

Kai Trump received a sponsors invite to play in The Annika tournament in Florida to shoot nine bogeys and two double-bogeys in her opening round.

Trump, 18, is a high school student in Florida who has committed to playing collegiate golf for the University of Miami next year.

Kai Trump says her first taste of LPGA Tour competition was "amazing" despite carding a 13-over-par 83 that left her in last place after the first round of The Annika tournament in Florida.

BELLEAIR, Fla. — Haeran Ryu shot a 6-under 64 on Thursday to take the first-round lead in The Annika, with teen amateur Kai Trump last in the 108-player field after an 83 in her LPGA Tour debut.

Ryu had four straight birdies on Nos. 4-7 on her back nine in breezy conditions at Pelican Golf Club. The South Korean player won the Black Desert Championship in Utah in May for her third career LPGA Tour title.

"My shot is good and putter is good and everything," Ryu said. "I'm so happy to make … a lot of birdies."

Trump Says U.S. Lacks ‘Certain Talents’ As He Defends H-1B Visa In Fox Interview

President Donald Trump said H-1B visas were necessary to bring talented workers to the U.S., adding that the country lacked certain talents, in a confrontational exchange during an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham, which comes two months after he signed an executive order that hiked the fees on the skilled worker visas to $100,000.

In a clip of the interview that aired on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle,” Trump claimed the U.S. was leading China on AI “by a lot,” said the U.S. has “the greatest economy,” and added “there is never going to be a country like what we have right now.”

Trump, who slapped an extra $100,000 on the H-1B visa, now says there aren’t enough talented people in the U.S. to fill jobs

Sasha Rogelberg is a reporter and former editorial fellow on the news desk at Fortune, covering retail and the intersection of business and popular culture.

President Donald Trump has appeared to change his tune on the stringency on one of his immigration policies, speaking about the importance of H-1B visas for specialized labor only a couple months after imposing steep hurdles meant to reduce the number of those visas doled out by U.S. companies.

Trump told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham in an interview released on Sunday that although he continues to believe the U.S. would not be able to increase wages for American employees if it brought in thousands of foreign workers, he also said the American workforce is lacking in key areas.

Trump’s Shocking Brawl With Laura Ingraham on Fox Exposes His Weakness

MAGA influencers are in a rage over President Trump’s appearance on Fox News, in which he told host Laura Ingraham that the country needs skilled foreign workers. The surprisingly antagonistic dustup came after Ingraham challenged Trump’s support for visas for skilled workers, declaring that they “flood the country” with “hundreds of thousands of foreign workers.”

“I agree,” Trump said, before delivering the coup de grâce: “But you also do need to bring in talent.” When Ingraham claimed we have “talented people here,” Trump replied: “No, you don’t,” which appeared to mean that—sit down for this one—foreign workers actually can play a complementary and productive role in the U.S. economy. Ingraham was visibly irked when Trump argued that trained U.S. workers are not always available as needed, creating a need for foreign workers. After all, this is true MAGA heresy.
