    Breaking: Tsunami warning issued for NZ's South Island after magnitude-6.3 quake

    A tsunami warning has been downgraded in New Zealand following a magnitude-5.9 earthquake.

    The quake struck 40 kilometres north of Te Anau with the west coast of the South Island from Milford Sound to Puysegur Point likely to be affected.

    Emergency officials had previously said the quake was a magnitude-6.3 and issued a tsunami warning. 

    Although the tsunami alert was cancelled, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said it expected coastal areas to experience "strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges at the shore".

    It said people should move out of the water, off beaches, and stay away from harbours, marinas and rivers.

    A ‌magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck New Zealand's lower South Island, shaking buildings and prompting authorities to briefly ‌issue a tsunami warning.

    The strong quake struck 40km north of Te Anau, the ​tourist hotspot of Fiordland, after 9pm on Thursday at a depth of 53km, according to GeoNet.

    ‌Initially measure as a magnitude 6.3, it was later reduced to a magnitude 5.9.

    New Zealand issues tsunami alert for South Island after magnitude-6.3 earthquake

    A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck near the town of Te Anau in New Zealand's South Island, shaking buildings and prompting authorities to briefly issue a tsunami warning.

    The earthquake's epicentre was about 40km north of Te Anau, which is the gateway to the tourist hotspot of Fiordland, according to New Zealand's National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

    The agency initially assessed the quake, which struck at 9.14pm local time (7.14pm AEST), at magnitude 6.3 before revising it downward to 5.9.

    Magnitude-7.6 quake in Japan prompts tsunami warning and evacuation order

    A strong earthquake has prompted a tsunami warning covering a large part of the country's north. 

    Some 90,000 people were ordered to evacuate after the magnitude-7.6 quake struck late on Monday night.

    Initial warnings said tsunami waves of up to 3 metres could hit some areas, but much smaller ones were reported early on Tuesday morning, local time.

    A magnitude-7.6 earthquake has hit near Japan's north-eastern coast, prompting a tsunami warning covering a large part of the country's coastline.

    Reuters reported that some 90,000 people had been ordered to evacuate after the quake struck at 11:15pm, local time, on Monday night.

    A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake has shaken north-eastern Japan, prompting orders for about 90,000 residents to evacuate and tsunami warnings that hours later were downgraded to advisories.

    The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) initially said a tsunami as high as 3 metres (10ft) could hit Japan’s north-eastern coast after the earthquake struck off the coast at 11.15pm (2.15pm GMT).

    Tsunami warnings were issued for the prefectures of Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate, and tsunamis from 20 to 70cm (7 to 27in) high were observed at several ports, JMA said.

    In the early hours of Tuesday the JMA downgraded the warnings to advisories, meaning it was seeing lower estimated wave heights and less risk of inundation.
