Lawyer for rapist Ralph Carr urges court to halt case, likening it to that of last man hanged in Australia

A pre-sentence hearing has continued for disgraced agent Ralph Carr (centre), who was found guilty of raping a woman in 2023. (ABC News)

A lawyer for rapist celebrity agent Ralph Carr has asked the court to halt sentencing of his client, likening the case to that of the last man to be hanged in Australia.

Prosecutors described the application as an inappropriate attempt to attract media attention.

Prosecutors say the County Court should get on with sentencing rapist celebrity agent Ralph Carr, after his defence team made a rare legal move to halt the case.

Last month, a jury found Carr guilty of raping a woman at his West Melbourne home three years ago, an allegation he denied. A longstanding suppression order was also lifted, identifying Carr.

Entertainment industry and AFL figure Ralph Carr has “a hurdle to jump” if he is going to convince a Victorian judge that he should be granted a stay on his sentence for raping a former staffer, a Melbourne court has heard.

Carr, 66, appeared in the Victorian county court on Tuesday, where judge Frank Gucciardo is hearing submissions about the sentence he should receive.

Carr was last month convicted of two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault after a trial. He had pleaded not guilty to the offences, which were committed against his former employee in March 2023.

Celebrity agent turned convicted rapist Ralph Carr was so concerned about reputational damage that, despite living in prison "hell", he refused to go to hospital while dealing with significant health difficulties.

The 66-year-old talent manager behind the careers of AFL champion Dustin Martin, singer Kate Ceberano and pop star ex-wife Tina Arena was found guilty of two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault by a Victorian County Court jury.

Live: Teal MP urges Albanese to 'pick up phone' and apologise for melon gaffe

Anthony Albanese is again facing calls to personally apologise to his Japanese counterpart over a gesture he made about two melons Sanae Takaichi gifted him, but a government frontbencher insists his remarks have been misrepresented.

South Australia’s royal commission into AI is dividing opinion on Capital Hill.

SA Premier Peter Malinauskas announced the inquiry yesterday, saying it will examine future approaches to AI and policy around it.

Labor senator Tony Sheldon, a senior figure in the party’s right faction who recently argued AI is a "tool" for work and not a decision maker, thinks SA's royal commission will positively contribute national conversation on AI.

Takaichi will brush off Albanese’s melon joke. She shouldn’t have to

Beijing: Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi knows how to roll with the punches.

She is not just a hard-nosed political operative, but a self-made one. With no political pedigree of her own, she has ascended to the top of Japan’s famously dynastic and patriarchal system, which has typically reserved its elite positions for the sons of important men.

One can be fairly confident that in the three decades she has spent toiling in Japanese politics, she has brushed off all manner of innuendo that has typically plagued women in pursuit of power.

Whether he intended to or not, Anthony Albanese has forced her to brush off another one.

Mamdani urges US government to arrest Netanyahu if Israeli PM visits US

New York mayor admits he does not have authority to arrest Netanyahu, adding Israeli PM is ‘architect of a horrific genocide’

Zohran Mamdani, the New York City mayor, acknowledged on Tuesday he does not have the authority to arrest Benjamin Netanyahu, but urged US federal authorities to do so if the Israeli prime minister visits the US later this year.

“Benjamin Netanyahu is a war criminal, the architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people,” Mamdani said in a video posted to social media.

Mamdani said he believed the international criminal court warrant for Netanyahu’s arrest over alleged war crimes was justified, but admitted he lacked the legal authority to enforce it.

Live updates: US defence boss lashed as ‘failure’ in fiery hearing

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has admitted that city authorities do not have the power to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he visit the city.

Netanyahu, who has been charged with war crimes by the International Criminal Court, is expected to visit New York in September for the United Nations general assembly.

Mamdani earlier in the week said he was in “active” discussions with law enforcement, after having consistently labelled Netanyahu a war criminal over the Gaza invasion.

In a video posted to social media today, Mamdani acknowledged that it would be impossible to carry out an arrest in the name of the ICC.

Tadej Pogacar urges radical overhaul of Tour de France amid stifling heatwave

Tadej Pogacar called for radical change to the professional racing calendar after another day of stifling temperatures, as Mathieu van der Poel won the shortened ninth stage of the Tour de France from Malemort to Ussel, with Tom Pidcock finishing third.

“If I had the power I would change all the calendar and not race in July and August in hot places,” Pogacar said. “I’d do a completely different calendar, but it’s not something I can do.”

The Slovenian rider, a four‑time Tour de France winner, said: “Maybe the next step is to start the stages earlier. Yesterday there was a proposal to start at 10, but it doesn’t change anything because then you finish in the heat.

Tour de France 2026: Mathieu van der Poel wins shortened ninth stage

Mathieu van der Poel won his third career Tour de France stage in a sprint finish on stage nine, which was shortened due to temperatures approaching 40C.

The 31-year-old Dutchman finished ahead of Denmark's Tobias Johannessen and Great Britain's Tom Pidcock in a breakaway pack.

Pidcock was going for a second Tour stage win of his career, but was hampered by a mechanical problem with his chain cassette or derailleur.

Sunday's ninth stage from Malemort to Ussel was around 30km shorter than planned because of a "red alert" from the French authorities.

Defending champion Tadej Pogacar finished in the chasing peloton six seconds behind the winner to keep the leader's yellow jersey heading into Monday's first rest day.

A tiny rock nearly ended Tom Pidcock's stage 9, but a spare button kept him in the mix.

Tom Pidcock kicking the everloving s— out of his rear derailleur was probably not the image that drivetrain sponsor SRAM was hoping for out of stage 9, but the American component brand can rest easy: This was an act of God, or at least freak physics, according to Q36.5 team management. And in fact, a key attribute of SRAM's shifters ended up saving the day.

Microsoft confirms Windows 11 26H2, urges IT admins to prepare for release

Windows 11 typically follows an annual update cycle, but Microsoft recently broke that tradition a bit by releasing a "26H1" version in the first half of this year as a "scoped" build for select new silicon PCs only. This version was not available for customers using 24H2 and 25H2 builds, as Microsoft is busy preparing version 26H2 for them, confirmed officially for the first time.

In a Windows IT Pro blog, Microsoft has urged IT admins to prepare for the upcoming release of Windows 11 version 26H2. The company has confirmed that this will be a small enablement package (eKB) that will simply light up certain disabled features that are already present in the operating system's code base. This means that the "refined" Windows update and deployment experience will be simpler and quicker, with minimal disruptions, as the feature update will simply toggle a few flags rather than performing a complete replacement.

Windows 11’s Low Latency Profile Fixes One of the Most Annoying Issues in File Explorer

The new performance profile makes File Explorer’s Home page feel almost instant, but it does not solve the deeper efficiency problems that still make Windows 11 frustrating to use.

The new Low Latency profile is a noticeable improvement to Windows 11 responsiveness, particularly in parts of the interface that previously felt inconsistent.

I’m usually skeptical when Microsoft talks about performance improvements in Windows 11 because too many of them are hard to feel in day-to-day use. The new Low Latency profile is different. It is a welcome change precisely because it improves the moments users actually notice: clicking something and waiting for Windows to respond.

ANZ chief urges banks to return to wealth, insurance

Australian banks should re-enter wealth management and insurance to improve their profitability, says ANZ chief executive Nuno Matos, areas they abandoned in the aftermath of the damaging banking royal commission.

Speaking at investment bank Morgan Stanley’s annual conference, Matos highlighted a steep decline in the big four’s return on capital over the past decade, which he linked to the narrower suite of services they now offer.

Anthropic urges global freeze on AI as it warns of losing control

The world’s most valuable artificial intelligence company has called for a global freeze on the development of the most powerful AI systems, warning that humanity is approaching a point where it could lose control of the technology it is racing to build.

In a blog post published on Thursday (Friday AEST), Anthropic, the San Francisco company behind the Claude chatbot, said it would be willing to suspend work on more capable systems if it could be confident that its rivals would do the same.

“If it were possible to effectively slow the development of this technology to give ourselves more time to deal with its immense implications, we think that would likely be a good thing,” executives wrote.

Anthropic says the world should have option to ‘pause’ on AI

US firm says it will convene policymakers for discussion of dangers, in post detailing progress of its Claude model

Anthropic has floated the idea of a worldwide “temporary pause” on AI development – and said it was going to convene “policymakers” to discuss the dangers of advanced AI – in its latest release touting the capabilities of its products.

In a long post on Thursday, Anthropic detailed the progress of its AI model, Claude, towards “recursive self-improvement” – that is, being able to make better and more powerful versions of itself. Recursive self-improvement is a bugbear of AI safety researchers, viewed as the key step for AI to become superintelligent and therefore unleash widespread consequences on humanity.

Anthropic urges AI labs to pause, warns humans risk losing control

It warned that rapid advances in technology could soon allow AI systems to improve themselves faster than society can control the risks.

Anthropic is proposing that the world’s top artificial intelligence companies come up with a coordinated way to pause development of advanced AI systems, warning that the technology is improving so quickly that there’s a risk humans would lose control.

The company behind the Claude chatbot said in a blog post on Thursday that, as cutting-edge AI gets increasingly faster at carrying out tasks, “it would be good for the world to have the option to slow or temporarily pause” its development.

Collingwood told to consider captaincy change amid Darcy Moore's injury dramas

AFL great Matthew Lloyd believes it's time for Collingwood to make a switch on its captain as Darcy Moore continues to battle injury problems.

Moore injured his hamstring against West Coast over the weekend in what has been ruled a moderate grade.

While the injury isn't season-ending, it's significant considering Moore has had a long list of soft tissue problems. He also recently returned from concussion.

War in the Middle East: latest developments

Paris (France) (AFP) – The latest developments in the Middle East war:

Iran's chief negotiator in talks with the United States, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, warned that his country had "not even started" and that US actions in the Strait of Hormuz had put shipping at risk.

Stocks sank across Asian exchanges as a fresh spike in Middle East tensions fanned fears over the fragile US-Iran ceasefire, and oil prices fell back slightly after gains on Monday.

Denmark's freight giant Maersk said one of its ships had sailed through the Strait of Hormuz under US escort, adding the transit was completed "without incident".
