Virgin launches major Bali sale from $429 after destination crowned Aussie favourite: 'Winter dragging on'

Australians dreaming of a Bali holiday can snap up return flights from $429 after Virgin launched a new international sale for one of our most popular overseas destinations.

Virgin Australia announced the sale on Monday, offering discounted flights from five Australian cities starting August 7.

Bali was crowned Australia's top overseas destination for 2026 earlier this year, with travel expert Alex Stragalinos telling Yahoo Lifestyle there's "so much beauty" beyond hotspots like Canggu, Seminyak, Ubud and Kuta to explore.

Virgin's cheapest fares are available from Melbourne and the Gold Coast, while Sydneysiders can snap up return flights from $499 and Brisbane travellers from $519.

The sale also includes discounted fares to Queenstown, Fiji and Vanuatu.

Virgin Media fined after hanging up on customers trying to cancel contracts

Virgin Media has been fined £28m for repeatedly preventing customers from cancelling contracts, Ofcom said.

The communications regulator said it uncovered tactics including agents deliberately hanging up calls, and customers being put on hold "for no reason".

It said millions of calls from customers were "likely mishandled" over a three-year period which prevented or delayed them from switching to a better broadband, landline or pay-TV deal.

The penalty was reduced by 30% as Virgin Media admitted its failing and agreed to settle, Ofcom added. Virgin Media apologised to the "small proportion who experienced an issue when contacting us to agree a new deal or cancel their service in the past".

Virgin Media fined record £28m for stopping customers cancelling contracts

Ofcom levies largest-ever consumer protection fine after finding firm deliberately mishandled millions of phone calls

Virgin Media has been fined £28m by the UK telecoms watchdog for repeatedly preventing customers from cancelling their contracts over a near three-year period.

Ofcom discovered that Virgin Media “likely mishandled” millions of phone calls between the start of 2022 and autumn 2024, with deliberate call-dropping tactics, unnecessary call transfers and putting customers on hold for “no reason”.

The watchdog investigated the company after it received almost 2,000 complaints from Virgin Media broadband, landline and pay TV customers who struggled to cancel their contracts.

The £28m fine, which was reduced by 30% as Virgin Media admitted to its failing and agreed to settle the case, is Ofcom’s biggest ever under the regulator’s consumer protection rules.

As the PE firm prepares to exit the airline, $93 million of expired flight credits should come in very handy.

There are few companies in Australia that seem to have done better out of COVID-19 than Bain Capital. Without the pandemic, Bain couldn't have plucked Virgin Australia out of administration in November 2020 for a mere $3.5 billion[[Only $730 million of this headline price was equity.]] and repaid itself in full within three years. Now six years and greater than $1 billion in distributed returns later, Covid has secured another windfall for the US private equity giant, this time in the form of $93 million in expired flight credits long forgotten by unlucky punters.

Virgin River Boss Unpacks Biggest Season 7 Finale Cliffhangers, From [Spoiler]'s Fate To That Surprise Return

If you've just finished bingeing your way through Season 7 of Netflix's "Virgin River," you could probably use a hug right about now. And while we can't reach through the screen for a friendly embrace, we can give you some intel on those life-altering (or possibly life-ending, in one case) finale cliffhangers as we begin the long, frustrating wait for Season 8.

Let's start with a quick recap of how things ended for the town's core residents: Marley gave birth to Mel and Jack's baby, who was immediately rushed to a separate hospital for heart surgery, which will be performed by Mel's ex-boyfriend Eli; Hope kicked Doc out of the house, then shared a tender moment with Roland after learning a shocking secret about her late father; Brady suffered a gnarly motorcycle accident, leaving his fate in question; Brie volunteered to help Clay find his missing sister; and Preacher began the process of separating from Jack's to start his own restaurant.

“Virgin River” star addresses Brady's shocking fate after season 7 cliffhanger: 'He's got the worst luck'

Virgin River's shocking season 7 finale left Brady's fate hanging in the balance — but as actor Ben Hollingsworth tells Entertainment Weekly, its resolution is also swimming around in his mind.

"I do — but, I can't tell anyone!" Hollingsworth insists to EW when asked if he knows whether Brady lives or dies, after the closing moments of the Netflix drama's season 7 finale, titled "David and Goliath," showed Brady careening to the ground after crashing his motorcycle on a stretch of rural town road.

The surprise moment came after he and longtime on-again, off-again girlfriend Brie (Zibby Allen) appeared to fully lean into their bombastic passion for good, in a scene that culminated in raunchy sex atop the same motorcycle that would eventually lead to his potential death.

Air New Zealand, Emirates, Cathay Pacific and more carriers rated in new 2026 list.

A Gulf airline has been named the world's safest as Qantas, Virgin Australia and fellow Tasman carrier Air New Zealand lose ground in the new rankings.

Etihad has been crowned the top full-service airline for 2026 in an annual list compiled by airline safety and product rating website, AirlineRatings.com

World's safest airline rankings for 2026

Airline Ratings has revealed its Top 25 Safest Full-Service and Low-Cost Airlines for 2026, highlighting excellence in turbulence prevention, crew expertise, and overall safety.

AirlineRatings.com, the world’s only airline safety and product rating website, has announced its Top 25 Safest Full-Service and Top 25 Safest Low-Cost Airlines for 2026 from the 320 airlines it monitors.

In compiling the list, CEO Sharon Petersen stressed that it is important for the travelling public to understand just how narrow the margins are between the world’s safest airlines, and that small numerical differences should not be interpreted as gaps in safety. She explained:

“What stands out this year is how little separates the leaders. Less than four points covered positions one through 14, and at the very top the margins were even tighter, with just 1.3 points separating positions one through six in the full service category. We may be reaching a point where traditional rankings risk being misleading, and where grouping airlines into performance tiers provides a more accurate reflection of reality. All airlines in the Top 25 are world leaders in aviation safety, and claims that one is significantly safer or less safe than another are both sensationalist and false.”

Singapore’s airlines have landed strong results in a global aviation safety ranking for 2026 – Scoot clinched third place among the world’s safest low-cost carriers, while Singapore Airlines took seventh spot in the full-service category.

The annual ranking, published by airline safety and product rating platform Airline Ratings, assessed 320 airlines for 2026, excluding carriers operating fewer than 25 aircraft. Airlines were evaluated across criteria including incident rates, fleet age and size, fatalities, and compliance with international audits and safety standards set by organisations such as the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

It follows several recent international cases where lithium batteries have caught fire.

From December 1, Virgin Australia passengers will be required to keep power banks within sight and easily accessible throughout the flight.
