A man walking his dog with a friend discovered the unexploded ordnance on a Sunshine Coast beach at about midnight.

Residents on Queensland's Sunshine Coast were woken in shock by an early morning blast when the Defence Force detonated an unexploded World War II-era shell found on a beach.

Police were called to Wurtulla Beach just before midnight after Sean Mackney's friend discovered an object at the base of a sand dune while they were walking his dog.

Wurtulla Beach woke up to a blast from 1945!

A World War II artillery shell found on a Sunshine Coast beach has been destroyed in a controlled blast that woke nearby residents before dawn. The unexploded round was discovered just before midnight on Saturday at the base of a dune on Wurtulla Beach. Sean Mackney and a friend came across it while walking his dog. His friend called out that she thought she had found a bomb. Curious, Mackney picked the object up before he realised what it was.“The sheer weight of it was massive,” he told the ABC. “I didn’t really know what to do … we called the police, and they were down there pretty quickly. I’m surprised nobody else had seen it, and [I wonder] how long it was exposed.”

Major bank drops KPMG in wake of audit leaks scandal – as it happened

ANZ dropped KPMG in the wake of the audit leaks scandal that rocked the corporate world earlier this year.

Data centre operator Firmus is gearing up for a $7.1 billion raise in a blockbuster IPO.

Look back on the day's events and insights from our business reporters on the ABC News live markets blog.

Thanks for spending the afternoon with Katie and I to find out all things markets.

It was a fairly business end to the week, with ANZ dropping the bombshell that it was cutting ties with its long-time auditor KPMG just a few weeks after Macquarie did the same.

ANZ drops KPMG from audit job as accounting body fails to land a hit

ANZ has dropped KPMG after almost 60 years of it holding the $29 million contract to audit the bank’s accounts, in a fresh blow to the consulting firm that is dealing with the fallout from a damaging whistleblower scandal.

But despite the allegations roiling the firm, the professional body charged with upholding the standards of auditors has made no critical findings about KPMG in a report published on Friday afternoon.

An anonymous KPMG whistleblower warned the firm of a raft of serious allegations in 2024, including that senior partners had misused confidential information to win work, but his claims were dismissed until Senator Deborah O’Neill went public with the allegations in March.

Wake Up, Babe—There's a New Mary-Kate Olsen Sighting

No one knows the New York City uniform quite like the Olsen twins, and this week, Mary-Kate Olsen gave us a few styling tips for a wildly chic, timeless city wardrobe.

The designer was caught stepping out in Manhattan alongside art dealer Vito Schnabel. Coffee in hand and oversize black sunglasses on, she was the picture of a quintessential New Yorker.

Ever the polished minimalist, Olsen slipped on a series of classic everyday staples: a luxurious long black coat, black Adidas Sambas (the elevated Sambae style), and a custom chocolate-brown crocodile bag from the Row, which she has carried before.

These classic Adidas sneakers have the Olsen seal of approval. Here's how to style them for a chic look.

If your goal this year is to build a wardrobe of classics, it might be worth taking a cue from Mary-Kate Olsen. True to the ethos of her brand, The Row, Olsen doesn't chase trends. Instead, she invests in high-quality, timeless silhouettes and wears them for years. This is especially evident in her sneaker choices, where she wears the same enduring silhouettes year after year. The Adidas Sambaes, in particular, remain one of her go-tos, and she proved it by stepping out in them in NYC yesterday.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery review – Josh O’Connor excels in another deadpan delight

Daniel Craig is joined by a sparkling array of talent including O’Connor, Glenn Close and Josh Brolin in this latest murder mystery with a religious undercurrent

Rian Johnson’s delectable new Knives Out film is a chocolate box: mouthwateringly delicious on the first layer and … well, perfectly tasty on the second. Daniel Craig returns as private detective Benoit Blanc, in a slightly more serious mode than before, with not as many droll suth’n phrases and quirky faux-naif mannerisms, but rocking a longer hairstyle and handsomely tailored three-piece suit.

Blanc arrives at a Catholic church in upstate New York to investigate the sensational murder of its presiding priest, Monsignor Jefferson Wicks, a ferocious clerical alpha male played by Josh Brolin, thundering his reactionary views from the pulpit. (That “Monsignor” title can only be bestowed by the pope incidentally: presumably Benedict XVI or John Paul II, not milksop liberals like Francis or Leo XIV.) And prime suspect is the sweet-natured, thoughtful junior priest Father Jud Duplenticy, amusingly played by Josh O’Connor, who was upset by the Monsignor’s heartless attitudes and was caught on video threatening to cut him out of the church like a cancer. Atheist Blanc faces off with the young priest, a worldview culture-clash which leads to an extraordinary encounter with the Resurrection itself.

Wake Up Dead Man review: Benoit Blanc's third Knives Out mystery is engrossing, and very funny

Agatha Christie wrote dozens of Hercule Poirot mysteries. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote over 60 Sherlock Holmes adventures. Rian Johnson, meanwhile, is on only his third Benoit Blanc whodunnit. But give it time. On the strength of Wake Up Dead Man, it feels like he and Daniel Craig’s Blanc could be solving murders for years to come.

Completing an unofficial trilogy, the filmmaker and star have pulled off one of the most consistent and rewarding cinematic triptychs in recent memory, each entry arriving at a singular mood, while maintaining, at its centre, its loquacious recurring hero, the “mere passive obser-vuh of the truth”.
