Count Nikolai says he 'wanted to get away' from royal life amid new revelations about his title loss
Prince Nikolai of Denmark is continuing to open up about some of the most personal and challenging moments of his life.
Following the release of the four-part documentary series he recently filmed for Danish television, the 26-year-old royal has been candid about experiences that shaped him growing up in one of Europe's most closely watched royal families.
As the eldest grandson of Queen Margrethe II, Nikolai said he became aware from a very young age that expectations surrounding him were different.
"I remember being conscious from an early age that I was the oldest of my generation," he shared. "I was the one who had to take the first step and, in some way, break the mold for the rest of my family."
Royal breaks silence on being stripped of titles – 'Decision made for me'
A royal who had his title taken away from him three years ago has spoken out about how he felt when it happened in a new upcoming documentary. Back in 2022, it was announced that from 2023, some members of the Danish Royal Family would no longer hold titles.
This was a decision made by then-Queen Margrethe II and affected some of her grandchildren. The grandchildren who lost their titles were the children of her youngest son, Prince Joachim. Rather than being known as princes and princesses, the children adopted the titles Count and Countess of Monpezat.

Queen Margrethe’s grandson Count Nikolai speaks out three years after losing his royal title: ‘A decision was made on my behalf’
More than three years after Queen Margrethe II’s controversial decision to strip four of her grandchildren of their princely titles, Count Nikolai of Monpezat is speaking publicly about the impact it had on his life.
The change officially took effect on January 1, 2023, when the then-Danish monarch announced that the children of her younger son, Prince Joachim, would no longer hold the titles of prince and princess.
Instead, they became Counts and Countesses of Monpezat, a move that sparked significant debate and strained family relations at the time.
Now, in a new documentary series titled 'Nikolai,' the 26-year-old grandson of Queen Margrethe reflects on the consequences of that historic decision and how it reshaped his future.
