Who is Mehrdad Akhlaghi, Iran’s new tech-focused defence minister?

Akhlaghi’s experience centres on ballistic missiles, aerospace technology and defence-industrial production.

Tehran, Iran – Mehrdad Akhlaghi Ketabchi has been appointed Iran’s defence minister at a time when the war with the United States is expected to escalate.

The 68-year-old was approved on Sunday by parliament, which has convened online since the start of the US-Israel war on Iran on February 28, to assume leadership of the Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces Logistics. In total, 237 lawmakers voted in favour of Akhlaghi’s appointment and 15 against.

Former Defence Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh was killed along with a large number of other senior figures, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, on the opening day of the war.

A landmark Queenslander that hadn’t changed hands in 105 years sold for $2.03 million after one of the weekend’s fiercest auction battles.

Despite clearance rates plummeting across most capital cities following the latest interest rate hike, 10 bidders registered for 87 Khartoum Street, Gordon Park.

Built in 1921, the three-bedroom, two-bathroom house sits on an 810-square-metre block and has stayed in the same family ever since.

“The two sisters who were born in the house lived there until recently, when one passed away and the other went into care – she’ll turn 99 soon,” said lead selling agent Holly Bowden, of Ray White Wilston.

A tanker sailing off the north coast of Qatar has been attacked, causing an unknown number of casualties, a British maritime security agency said. The attack came as Iran declared it would close a route in the strait of Hormuz being used to circumvent Tehranâs blockade of traffic.

The vessel was in the Gulf, about 500km (300 miles) west of the strait of Hormuz, when it reported being struck âby multiple projectilesâ, the UK Maritime Trade Operations said on Wednesday. The UK authority did not specify the origin of the ship.

The head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaei, told al-Jazeera in an interview that Iran is waiting for US President Donald Trump's response after Iran passed on a message via Qatar.

Rezaei said they include ending the war on all fronts, releasing assets seized from Iran and ending the US naval blockade of Iranian ports.

A military commander who President Vladimir Putin recently awarded Russia’s highest state honor for the capture of the eastern Ukrainian city of Kostiantynivka has died, Russian and Ukrainian military officials said Wednesday.

Major General Apti Alaudinov, who serves as serves as deputy chief of the Defense Ministry’s ideological arm and commander of the Akhmat special forces, said Major General Anton Grunis “passed on to another world” in a short post on Telegram.

“He left us as a hero who carried out his sacred duty,” Alaudinov said without specifying when Grunis died or the circumstances of his death.

Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces commander, Robert “Madyar” Brovdi, later claimed that Grunis was “eliminated” in a nighttime raid in the eastern Donetsk region on Sept. 12.

Iran faces 'greatest financial offensive ever', says US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent

The US treasury secretary has threated Iran with "the single greatest financial offensive ever", claiming the US-Israel war with Iran was "entering its endgame".

Scott Bessent said the US would sever all economic ties with the country in "an economic D-Day" and that any nation partnering with Iran financially would also be isolated.

Bessent's threat to the Iranian regime follows several U-turns and extended deadlines from US President Donald Trump's administration on previous threats.

Iran dismissed Bessent's comments and said it would shut down all oil exports from the region "if the war continues", according to news agency Reuters.
