There’s another water crisis happening in the Colorado River Basin — and this one’s invisible

The United States’ two largest reservoirs have dropped to unprecedented lows this year as drought grips the Southwest, but below the ground there’s another water crisis playing out — one that’s much less visible, but no less alarming.

The amount of groundwater in the Colorado River Basin is declining rapidly, and it’s doing so in unexpected ways, according to a new study from scientists at Virginia Tech, published in the journal Water Resources Research.

Lake Mead and Lake Powell are the visible faces of the Southwest’s critical water problem, as the Colorado River — which supplies water to nearly 40 million people — shrinks due to a combination of climate change and human demand.

Colorado River Basin lost trillions of gallons of groundwater during recent severe drought, study finds

The Colorado River's shrinking reservoirs have become a familiar sign of the West's water challenges. But a new study finds groundwater that helps sustain the river system is also disappearing.

Researchers at Virginia Tech found the Upper Colorado River Basin lost an estimated 4.6 trillion gallons of groundwater during a severe three-year drought from 2020 to 2022. That's enough water to halfway fill Lake Powell, stretched along the Utah-Arizona border.

The losses were greater than those in the drier Lower Basin, according to thestudy published in Water Resources Research.

"In the Mountain West, groundwater is an important source of supply," said Esther Oyedele, who led the study. "So our study has been able to show that groundwater cannot simply just be treated as an unlimited backup anymore."

Colorado River is losing groundwater where scientists least expected

Colorado River groundwater fell fastest in the snowy upper basin during the 2020 to 2022 drought, nearly double the loss in the desert below.

When the Colorado River runs short, attention usually turns to Lake Mead, where a pale ring along the shoreline reveals how far the water has fallen.

The mountain half of the river, where the snow falls and the water starts, is supposed to be the safe half.

During the drought of 2020 to 2022, the Colorado River’s upper basin lost nearly twice as much groundwater as the desert half did.

Esther Oyedele and Susanna Werth of Virginia Tech, with a colleague at Indiana University, measured the loss with NASA satellites that weigh the water in the ground from orbit.

Crews respond to water rescues as storms move through Phoenix area

SCOTTSDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — Storms packing heavy rain flooded roads in parts of Maricopa County on Wednesday, sparking water rescues and road closures.

Scottsdale Fire Capt. Dave Folio said the monsoon storms dropped up to nearly 3 inches of rain in the northern parts of the city.

Other road closures in north Phoenix include Cloud Road at 19th and 24th streets.

Just after 2 p.m., three drivers were stranded in about 2 feet of standing water on the Loop 101 on-ramp at Princess Drive in Scottsdale. Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers used four-wheel-drive vehicles to push those vehicles out of the water by 2:40 p.m. No one was hurt.

WHAT TO EXPECT: Flood Watch on Wednesday for heavy rain and flash flooding

PHOENIX — A surge of monsoon moisture is moving back in and a storm system out west will help provide the instability needed to bring heavy downpours to Arizona over the next couple of days.

Wednesday is an ABC15 Weather Action Day with a Flood Watch in effect through 11 p.m. across the entire Phoenix metro area as well as most of the state.

Any storms that move through will be capable of producing heavy rain and flooding with rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches an hour, so stay weather-aware and do not drive through flooded roadways or washes.

We could also see storms that bring damaging winds over 60 mph, dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning, hail and blowing dust.

Arizona rain brings cooler temperatures, lingering tropical humidity

Monsoon showers bring high temperatures down to 81 degrees in Phoenix. Drier conditions and warmer temps will take over by the weekend. The FOX 10 Weather Experts have the latest on the active storms.

PHOENIX – Wednesday, Sept. 15, was a monsoon weather day for the books as rounds of storms moved through Arizona, dropping heavy rain across Arizona.

Parts of Arizona saw more than a monsoon season’s worth of rain, while others barely saw a tenth of an inch.

Another round of showers and thunderstorms will cross Arizona this evening, moving out by around midnight. Heavy, widespread rain will track through the high country overnight, keeping the flash flood risk high for most of the state.

Liberals pour cold water on Bragg's migration comments

Andrew Bragg addressed the National Press Club on Wednesday, covering a variety of topics. (ABC News: Matt Roberts)

Coalition colleagues say Andrew Bragg's suggestion that net migration cuts could be achieved by targeting backpackers and graduated students is not an agreed opposition policy.

In a wideranging speech, the Liberal frontbencher also called compulsory superannuation "a loss of liberty" and that large tech companies should be taxed more.

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has also been unclear about whether she has a target for net migration.

A Liberal frontbencher's suggestion that net migration under 180,000 is "achievable" with cuts to backpackers and international students is unauthorised and does not reflect an agreed position of Angus Taylor's shadow cabinet.

Coalition wants to bring migration down to lowest level since Global Financial Crisis

The Coalition wants to bring migration down to its lowest level since the Global Financial Crisis, and is preparing to argue that visas for students, graduates and backpackers must be cut so that housing construction can keep pace with inflows of new arrivals.

Opposition housing spokesman Senator Andrew Bragg will on Wednesday reveal the Coalition will seek to take net overseas migration levels under 180,000 people per year on average – a target that is 45,000 lower than Labor’s short-term forecasts, and 120,000 below last year’s intake.

The new detail on the heated question of net overseas migration, also known as NOM, will inject fresh energy into the debate over optimum migration levels and how to achieve them amid public concern that immigration has been too high since the pandemic.

'Deep Water' Review: Renny Harlin's Double-Dip Disaster Movie

Aaron Eckhart and Ben Kingsley lead the "human drama" in Harlin's attempt to recapture the commercial mojo of "Deep Blue Sea."

When a once-successful director finds himself stranded in a wilderness of misguided projects and indifferent audience response, he may try to reignite inspiration by going back to the ingredients of one of his iconic hits. If he can replicate the perfect storm of elements that made the earlier film work, maybe the new movie will put him back on top.

This kind of thing happens often enough, whether it’s William Friedkin aiming for a West Coast “French Connection” with “To Live and Die in L.A.” or John McTiernan making “Die Hard with a Vengeance.” But we’re in a far more degraded realm of return-to-glory-days director syndrome when it’s Renny Harlin trying to recapture the low-trash spark of “Deep Blue Sea,” his well-liked exploitation action thriller. Talk about a 1999 movie that wasn’t about the brave new movie future!

Aaron Eckhart Talks Shark Movie Deep Water: ‘I’ve Been Through It in Real Life’ | Interview

Deep Water star Aaron Eckhart spoke to ComingSoon editor-in-chief Tyler Treese about his new shark movie. Eckhart discussed reuniting with director Renny Harlin, using his imagination in the disaster film, and why he prefers to work with familiar directors at this point in his career. Deep Water is out in theaters on May 1 from Magenta Light Studios.

“A flight from Los Angeles to Shanghai goes down in the middle of the Pacific. After surviving the crash, the survivors soon discover they’re not alone, and they must survive the shark-infested waters,” says the official synopsis for Deep Water.

Tyler Treese: Aaron, congrats on Deep Water. What was most exciting for you about getting to do a shark movie? Especially with Renny Harlan, who had already made a great shark movie, so he has experience in this field.

Western Australian firefighters find two joeys hiding beneath burnt out tree after bushfire

Firefighters in Western Australia have made an incredible find beneath a burnt out tree after fires tore through parts of the states south west.

Volunteer fire fighters from Rockingham and Wanneroo Bush Fire Brigades were patrolling and mopping up areas around Boddington after destructive bushfires swept through earlier this week.

Coming across a burnt out tree, the fire fighters were shocked to find two young joeys hiding underneath.

“It’s moments like this that quietly stay with you long after the fire is out,” the Department of Fire and Emergency Services WA said.

The volunteers gave the young kangaroos water from a bottle before they were given a quick check over by the crew for any burns.
