For years, Nick Chapman crossed a tract of land next to an old rail corridor when he walked his three children from their home in Haberfield to Kegworth Public School at Leichhardt, in Sydney’s inner west, in the 1990s.

Chapman, an environmental scientist, envisaged the weed-strewn strip beside the Hawthorne Canal as forming part of a “greenway” track slicing through Sydney’s dense inner suburbs. He was far from alone. Cyclists saw a crucial missing link in the city’s bike network, and environment groups imagined an urban biodiversity corridor.

WA Bushfire: West River and Fitzgerald residents urged to still be alert as warning downgraded

A fire in West River and Fitzgerald has been downgraded after residents were earlier urged to leave their homes as the large uncontrolled bushfire moved north-west rapidly.

Sparked in a paddock about 1.10pm on Wednesday, the blaze resulted in an emergency warning for those in the area bounded by West River Road, Old Ongerup Road and Fitzgerald Road in Fitzgerald and West River in the Shire of Ravensthorpe.

The warning was downgraded an advice level just before 7pm, however, residents were still warned to stay alert.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services say the blaze has been contained but is not yet under control.

The first heatwave of the summer will reach its peak across New South Wales today, with temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius likely to span from Western Australia's north-west all the way to Parramatta.

The heatwave has also sparked an extreme fire danger warning for large parts of NSW.

But reprieve is around the corner — at least in NSW — with a cold front set to bring a cooler change by the end of the weekend.

It's the first taste of what's likely to be a hot summer for most of the country, according to the Bureau of Meteorology's long-range outlook.

More than a dozen homes have been destroyed near major urban centres after a fast-moving fire swept through bushland in extreme heatwave conditions.

Emergency warnings were issued for residents near fires on the NSW Central Coast and in the Hunter region on Saturday as 75 fires burned across the state.

At least 12 homes have been destroyed by a bushfire at Koolewong, not far from built-up areas on the Central Coast.

Kemar Roach became the oldest West Indies bowler to take a Test five-wicket-haul since Courtney Walsh in 2000, taking 5-78 against New Zealand on his return to the side.

Roach struck early in the morning on day four of the match, dismissing Will Young for 23. New Zealand had already scored 448 runs in their second innings, thanks to big hundreds from Rachin Ravindra and Tom Latham, and were looking to set the West Indies a huge chase. Roach then made it three wickets in consecutive overs, finding Matt Henry's outside edge before taking a catch off his own bowling to dismiss Jacob Duffy and trigger the declaration.

Kemar Roach celebrates Test comeback with fifer: Key stats

New Zealand have set West Indies a daunting target of 531 runs in the first Test match in Christchurch.
The home side declared their second innings at a mammoth total of 466/8, giving them an overall lead of 530 runs.
While most of the WI bowlers had a hard time in the innings, veteran Kemar Roach walked away with a five-wicket haul.
Notably, the 37-year-old pacer is featuring in his comeback Test.

Roach, who claimed two wickets in his first outing, trapped the talismanic Kane Williamson for 9 to open his account.
Hundreds from New Zealand skipper Tom Latham (145) and Rachin Ravindra (176) then put the hosts in command.
Roach broke the 279-run stand by dismissing the former.
The fast bowler then took three wickets on Day 4 to finish with figures of 5/78 from 22 overs.
