A dominant species of algae in the bloom which devastated South Australia's coastline has been found to be the most toxic of its kind to be studied, according to an Australian-led research team.

Karenia cristata was identified by the research team as the algae causing brevetoxins in November 2025, with the new research finding the laboratory-grown strains of it were highly toxic, even in very low concentrations.

It was found there could potentially be a bloom anywhere with similar coastal water conditions.

"Marine animals were mysteriously dropping dead: around 1 million were wiped out." Scientists now know the reason why – and it's terrifying

Marine researchers in Australia have found what might be the most toxic species of microalgae ever studied.

In 2025, trouble was brewing in a 20,000 km2 area off the coast of South Australia. For more than a year, marine animals were mysteriously dropping dead: around one million animals were wiped out and some humans even got sick.

Now, scientists have confirmed that the culprit behind these mass marine animal deaths is a species of microalgae called Karenia cristata. The algal bloom produced several powerful toxins, which the researchers say result in stronger toxic effects than any species they have studied before.

“This can partly explain the scale of the impacts witnessed in this event, which have included the mass mortality of marine invertebrates, fish, mammals and birds, over many months,” says professor Shauna Murray, a marine biologist at the University of Technology Sydney.

Spider which uses spring trap to capture prey discovered in Australia

A new species of spider which weaves a catapult-like silk trap to snare a single type of ant has been discovered in the remote rainforests of northern Australia.

Researchers believe the nocturnal predator developed the unique hunting method to make meals of aggressive ants which are notoriously dangerous – and unusual – prey for arachnids.

The snare's "exceptionally high power" flings the ant into a bigger web at "15 times the most extreme g-forces experienced by jet pilots", said lead researcher Prof Ajay Narendra.

Though it is yet to be formally named, scientists have nicknamed the tiny spider "ballista", after the ancient weapon used to hurl stones in battle.

Newly discovered spider uses 'ballista' web to capture prey

A newly discovered spider uses an ingenious method to launch its prey into the air, named after an ancient Roman weapon.

The ballista spider was discovered in the rainforests of Far North Queensland.

The spider is yet to be formally named, but belongs to the genus Propostira.

A bizarre species of spider from the remote rainforests of Far North Queensland springs a nasty surprise when its prey is lured into its web.

The tiny and newly discovered ballista spider — named after an ancient Roman weapon that used a spring to launch a stone — uses an ingenious method to literally launch its prey into the air.

This tiny Australian spider uses a high-powered web catapult to trap and eat aggressive ants

There’s more than one way a spider can spin its web. Some construct large vertical orb webs, while others build horizontal sheet webs or tangled cobwebs that ensnare crawling insects.

There’s also more than one way a spider can catch its dinner. Net-casting spiders throw small silk nets over unsuspecting prey, while slingshot spiders use their conical webs like catapults, launching both themselves and the web toward nearby prey.

In the tropical rainforests of the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, we discovered a spider with a new hunting strategy: a small nocturnal animal of the genus Propostira which we call the ballista spider.

FIFA World Cup: How Far Has an Asian Team Advanced in the Tournament's History?

As the FIFA World Cup has expanded over the decades, nations representing the Asian Football Confederation have transformed from underdogs into teams capable of challenging the sport's traditional powers.

From South Korea's historic run in 2002 to Japan's consistent knockout appearances, Asian teams have steadily elevated the continent's profile on soccer's biggest stage.

As the 2026 World Cup approaches, many fans are asking: What's the furthest an Asian team has ever gone?

The deepest World Cup run by an Asian nation belongs to South Korea.

Co-hosting the tournament with Japan in 2002, the Taeguk Warriors made history by becoming the first Asian team to reach the semifinals. Under manager Guus Hiddink, South Korea defeated Portugal in the group stage before eliminating Italy and Spain in the knockout rounds.

Could an Asian team win the World Cup?

Could changing the way we date solve Asia's low fertility rates?

There are more Asian teams competing in this year's FIFA World Cup than ever before, but can any of them win?

With the tournament expanding to 48 teams, Asia has nine nations plus New Zealand from the Oceania confederation competing for the prize across the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Many, like Saudi Arabia and Iran are from the Middle East, but East and South East Asia will be represented by World Cup regulars Japan, South Korea and Australia.

Despite decades of investment, growing fan bases and increasingly professional leagues, no men's team from Asia has ever reached a World Cup final.

Which states get a public holiday for Anzac Day?

Many people will be laying wreaths and wearing poppies for Anzac Day on Saturday.  (ABC News: Che Chorley)

Anzac Day is coming up on Saturday, but does that mean you get a long weekend?

Anzac Day is a public holiday in each state and territory.

When Anzac Day falls on a weekend, many employees are already not working because they have weekends off.

Some state governments decide to observe a public holiday on a weekday, which results in those workers having a day off work.

This year, that bonus day off is on Monday — but that's not Australia-wide.

Only three of Australia's eight states and territories have public holidays on Monday.

What is open and what is closed on Anzac Day 2026?

Add articles to your saved list and come back to them anytime.

Anzac Day falls on a Saturday this year, which means in Queensland we don’t get an extra day off.

However, restrictions to opening hours and alcohol sales apply just as if the Saturday were a weekday Anzac Day public holiday.

That means non-exempt businesses must remain shut on the day, and some exempt ones can’t open until 1pm or 1.30pm.

Large retailers, including supermarkets, department stores and hardware shops, are “non-exempt shops”, and must remain closed on Anzac Day.

So that means no Coles, Woolies, Aldi, Bunnings, Myer, David Jones, Kmart, Target, or Big W (except the Woolworths at Brisbane Airport, which is open from 1pm).

Match Preview: CommBank Socceroos v Cameroon | FIFA Series 2026™

It is a last chance for the squad to impress Head Coach Tony Popovic as they look to bed down principles to take them into the global finals in June.

The game against Cameroon is the first in a two-game series against high quality opposition in their final games on home soil ahead of the World Cup.

Head Coach Tony Popovic initially made twelve changes to the squad that competed in the November international window. These include players returning from injury, two first-time call ups in Lucas Herrington and Ante Suto, and a potential debutant in Deni Juric.

There has also been a change in the squad, with Kye Rowles coming in to replace Fran Karacic, who has a foot problem.
