June 12 (UPI) — The U.S. men vowed to show a new aggression under coach Mauricio Pochettino at the 2026 World Cup, shedding a previous "good guy" narrative.

"I think he brings that South American spirit we've been missing," midfielder Tim Weah told reporters Wednesday. "We've always been the good guys It's kinda nice being on the other end and being the aggressor a bit. It's fun."

Star forward Christian Pulisic and the Americans will start that journey against Paraguay in their Group D opener Friday in Inglewood, Calif. The match will air at 9 p.m. EDT on Fox and Telemundo and stream on Peacock on Tubi.

Coaches’ votes Round 13: Dawson’s big-game impact recognised after Cats thriller

Crows Captain Jordan Dawson’s inspirational performance in Adelaide’s one-point win against Geelong on Thursday night has earned him a perfect 10 in the AFLCA Coaches’ votes.

The 29-year-old was brilliant in the middle, and damaging in attack, finishing the match with 22 disposals, nine tackles, seven clearances, seven marks, three goals and 486 metres gained.

Young gun Dan Curtin was also prolific, and received eight votes following his team-high 26 disposals, five clearances, five marks, one goal and 527 metres gained.

Forward and Vice Captain Alex Neal-Bullen rounded out the vote-getters for Adelaide with one, after amassing 15 disposals, five tackles, three clearances and kicking a goal.

Why Kmart is opening up a furniture showroom and taking on IKEA

Retail giant Kmart is setting up its first physical showroom for furniture and homewares as it seeks a bigger slice of a $35 billion market, with Rob Scott, the chief executive of its parent company Wesfarmers, saying bricks-and-mortar outlets remain critical despite growth in online commerce.

Wesfarmers, which also owns Officeworks and Bunnings, is navigating a changing retail environment as more shoppers rely on artificial intelligence and purchase online.

Speaking to this masthead during Wesfarmers’ strategy day in Sydney on Wednesday, Scott says he remains optimistic about continuing to grow Kmart’s bricks-and-mortar stores. The company’s new “K Home” concept, which is opening in Melbourne’s Box Hill South, is but the latest addition.

Kmart returning checkouts to exits in Australia

Two dozen Kmarts in Australia will be refurbished with a new format that moves the cash registers back to the store entrances, and the group is also trialling a new concept store for home goods.

Kmart Group managing director Aleksandra Spaseska told analysts on Wednesday that 16 of the roughly 300 Kmarts in Australia had already been converted to the "Plan C+" format, which features entry and exit gates and relocated cash registers.

"It is delivering improved space allocation, better visual merchandising, and an enhanced beauty experience," Spaseska said.

The format is also driving higher sales through increased cross-shop between departments, with shoppers buying more items per basket, she said.

Kmart reverses major checkout change after more than a decade

Kmart is ditching its controversial centre of store checkouts for dozens of stores and moving them back to the traditional front entrance checkouts. The budget retailer first began moving its cash registers to the middle of stores more than a decade ago, sparking waves of complaints from shoppers.

Now, Kmart has confirmed it is overhauling more of its stores to return cash registers to the front. Kmart Group managing director Aleksandra Spaseska told analysts that 16 of the roughly 300 Kmart stores across the country had already been converted to the new 'Plan C+' format, which includes entry and exit gates and the relocated checkouts.

What strange and puzzling times we live in. Pauline Hanson shot to fame as a disendorsed Liberal candidate before the turn of the century, and I never expected to see the day, 30 years later, where the polls showed her One Nation party getting a fraction more first-preference votes than the Labor government and leaving the Coalition down and out on less than 20 per cent. Hanson for PM?

Meanwhile, it’s a strange and puzzling time for the housing market. Oh, no. The government’s meddling in the budget has house prices falling. Why wasn’t I warned?

I could be wrong, but I doubt we’ll ever see Hanson moving into the Lodge. This is just a further step in the decline of two-party politics. Voters are disillusioned with both sides of politics and looking for some other party or independent to vote for. The sudden popularity of Hanson and One Nation is a sign both sides are on the nose, and voters are looking for a convenient way to protest. If everyone else is piling into One Nation, why don’t I join in?

One Nation takes primary vote lead in Newspoll as Albanese’s ratings slump to record low

Newspoll corroborates two polls I reported last week that had One Nation first on primary votes, although only by one point in Newspoll instead of three points in the YouGov and Redbridge polls.

Anthony Albanese’s net approval slumped seven points to -24, a record low below his previous record low -21 in February 2025.

This article also includes coverage of the June 2 US California jungle primary and the June 18 UK Makerfield byelection. A Queensland state poll gave the LNP a big lead.

A national Newspoll, conducted June 1–4 from a sample of 1,240, gave One Nation 31% of the primary vote (up four since the previous Newspoll that was taken after the May 12 budget), Labor 30% (down one), the Coalition 18% (down two), the Greens 11% (down one) and all Others 10% (steady).

One Nation surges into first place for primary support – but the ALP is still favoured to win a two-party preferred majority

In the last week One Nation primary support increased 2.5% to 29.5% and is now clearly ahead of the ALP, down 1% to 26% and the L-NP Coalition, down 2.5% to 17.5% – Liberals on 14.5% (down 3%) and Nationals 3% (up 0.5%). Support for the Greens was up 2% to 15.5%, and Independents/ Other Parties down 1% to 11.5% according to the Roy Morgan survey conducted from June 1-7, 2026, with a representative Australia-wide cross-section of 1,631 electors.

This is the first time in a Roy Morgan Federal Poll that One Nation has been ahead of both the ALP (by 3.5% points) and the L-NP Coalition (by 12% points).

Since the Federal Budget was delivered by Treasurer Jim Chalmers on Tuesday May 12, 2026, primary support for One Nation is up 5% points to 29.5%, ALP support is down 3.5% points to 26%, L-NP Coalition support is down 6.5% points to 17.5%, and Greens support is up 4% points to 15.5%.

For all the fear and loathing about SpaceX’s fast-tracked entry into passive market indices, investors are realising that everything is actually active.

On Friday, the SpaceX initial public offering suffered a major setback. Index provider S&P Global said it would not change its rules to fast-track the inclusion of Elon Musk’s company in its index.

SpaceX would have to wait a minimum of 12 months, have a free float of at least 10 per cent and meet profitability tests if it is to be added to the S&P indices, which are closely tracked by trillions of dollars in institutional capital and exchange-traded funds.

Kyiv, Ukraine – Earlier this week, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko for the first time took part in the “rehearsal” of Russia’s use of tactical and strategic nuclear weapons.

Between Tuesday and Thursday, he and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin presided over joint military drills that covered the area from Eastern Europe to the Pacific and involved hundreds of Russian missile launchers, warplanes, warships and nuclear submarines.

“We threaten absolutely no one,” said Lukashenko, a 71-year-old former collective farm director who has helmed his ex-Soviet nation since 1994. “But we have such weapons, and we’re ready in every possible way to defend our common fatherland from [the western Belarusian city of] Brest to [Russia’s Pacific port of] Vladivostok.”

Russia and Belarus completed their combined nuclear exercises on May 21, highlighting Russia’s ability to leverage Belarus for future Russian military operations and Russia’s deepening de facto control over Belarus. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko presided over the second stage of combined Russian-Belarusian nuclear force exercises on May 21.[1] The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) claimed that Russian forces delivered nuclear munitions to Belarus and that Belarusian forces practiced receiving, equipping, and moving specialized munitions and launch vehicles for the Iskander-M ballistic missile system.[2] The Russian MoD claimed that the exercises included the launch of a Yars intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) from the Plesetsk State Test Cosmodrome, a Zircon hypersonic missile from the Barents Sea, a Sineva ICBM from a submerged nuclear-powered strategic submarine, cruise missiles from Tu-95MS aircraft, a Kinzhal hypersonic missile from MiG-31I aircraft, and an Iskander-M missile from the Kapustin Yar Training Ground.[3] The Russian MoD claimed that elements of the Russian Strategic Missile Forces, Northern and Pacific Fleets, Long-Range Aviation (Russian Aerospace Forces [VKS]), and Leningrad and Central Military Districts took part in the missile launches.[4] Putin claimed that Russia and Belarus plan to hold the biennial “Union Shield” exercises in 2027. The next Union Shield exercises may include a nuclear component for the first time.
