How will the weather affect the start of the World Cup?

Storms causing delays to some of the warm-up matches have already shown how extreme weather will affect this World Cup.

And with more storms forecast, some of the opening games are likely to be affected.

President Trump denies having promised 'no new wars'. BBC Verify has found multiple examples of him saying this during the 2024 US election campaign.

Will Grant spoke to a 70-year-old widow who says the inability to use her building's elevator during a power outage trapped her and her husband when he needed medical care.

BBC's Brandon Livesay toured the Columbia Park Training Facility in Morris Township, New Jersey that will host the team in the coming weeks.

The World Cup is in desperate need of a vibe shift. The matches have arrived just in time

The world wasn’t so different on June 13, 2018, when the US, Mexico and Canada were awarded the right to jointly host the 2026 World Cup.

Donald Trump was president. A ban on travel to the US from mostly Muslim countries was in effect. Allied nations were reeling at the US government’s whiplash foreign policy. But there was hope that the world coming to America could bring the kind of unity and joy typical of massive sporting contests like the World Cup.

Fast forward almost eight years to the day, and it’s finally here. The first of 104 matches in this biggest-ever World Cup kicks off at 3 p.m. ET in Mexico City when South Africa meets up with Mexico in the historic Estadio Azteca.

Lightning stops play: how electrical storms could disrupt the World Cup

Under US rules, even a distant strike can suspend a game – and some will take place in Florida, the thunderstorm state

Hot weather will be a major concern at the World Cup, but lightning may also prove a particular problem. Under US safety regulations, a strike within 10 miles (16km) of a stadium triggers a 30-minute suspension of the game, during which players must leave the pitch.

The size of the safety zone was dictated by research on the distance that lightning can strike from a storm even with no clouds overhead. This is more than a theoretical risk. During a game in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1998, an entire team was killed by a single bolt of lightning. There have been many other deadly incidents.

‘A poisoned chalice’: will Doctor Who survive Russell T Davies’s exit?

The lowest ever viewing figures, an identity crisis for the show and a confusing Billie Piper-based cliffhanger – whoever takes on the BBC fantasy drama has quite the job on their hands …

The announcement that the BBC has abandoned the planned Doctor Who Christmas special, and is ending its partnership with showrunner Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf production company, will not have come as much of a surprise to many fans. It has been rumoured for some time. Aside from the gossip, the fact that no filming appeared to have taken place for a programme that traditionally requires a lengthy post-production process had already suggested something was up.

BBC cancels Doctor Who Christmas special and Russell T Davies announces exit

A new Christmas special of Doctor Who has been cancelled while the BBC plans the next phase of the sci-fi show.

The corporation announced last year that there would be a festive special in 2026, but confirmed on Wednesday that it will no longer proceed.

Instead, the broadcaster is inviting production companies to put themselves forward to help co-produce the next series.

Showrunner Russell T Davies also confirmed he will leave the long-running programme, writing on Instagram that it is "goodbye from me but hello to a big new future for the show".

Referring to the announcement of the Christmas special, he explained: "We only cooked that up to guarantee a future when no one knew what would happen, but now we do know, there's no need for it.

‘Doctor Who’ Christmas Special Not Going Forward This Year at BBC as Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf Exit Series

The BBC is no longer going ahead with a “Doctor Who” Christmas special this year as planned and is seeking new production partners.

Showrunner and writer Russell T Davies and producer Bad Wolf have officially exited the series as the BBC puts the show out to competitive tender. “‘Doctor Who’ remains an important part of the BBC and this tender underpins the BBC’s continued commitment to ‘Doctor Who’ ensuring audiences will enjoy the show for years to come,” a release said on Wednesday.

Therefore, the previously announced Christmas special will also not be going forward. “This decision was not taken lightly, and we know it will be disappointing for fans, but in order to set the show up for future series, it was decided that rather than bridge the gap with a one-off special, we are choosing to push forward to invest in the long-term future of the show which ensures that when the TARDIS lands once more, it does so in all its glory,” the release stated.

‘History will prove me right’: Inside Magnussen’s Enhanced Games gamble

James Magnussen is sitting shirtless beside a luxury Las Vegas hotel pool, veins protruding from his forearms, soaking in the Nevada sun and completely comfortable that he has made the right call.

“History will prove me right,” Magnussen says behind oversized black sunglasses. “I’m very confident in that. People will look back and go, ‘oh, it was ahead of the curve’.

Two years after declaring he would “juice to the gills” and join the world’s most controversial new sporting venture, the former Australian swimming star is days away from competing at the inaugural Enhanced Games – a billionaire-backed event hoping to one day become, quite literally, the Olympics on steroids.

"The Doping Olympics": a look inside the Enhanced Games

Has the US set the stage for military intervention in Cuba?

At the inaugural Enhanced Games this weekend, something unprecedented is taking place; professional athletes from around the world will be encouraged to swim, lift, and sprint with the aid of performance enhancing drugs.

The competition — nicknamed the 'Doping Olympics' — has provoked enormous controversy in the world of sport. Enhanced runs counter to the many athletic organisations who have spent decades prioritising a crackdown on performance enhancing drugs. Many in the sporting world say that a competition that endorses doping will normalise unfair and possibly dangerous drug use. But supporters argue that the competition will facilitate the safe, open use of drugs that are often taken unsafely and without medical supervision at competitions elsewhere.

‘We’re the good ones. I really believe that’: meet the German billionaire behind the Enhanced Games

Having unearthed the world’s largest triceratops head, Christian Angermayer knows where to find treasure among the dirt. Step forward Sunday’s inaugural ‘Steroid Olympics’ promoting PEDs to the masses

Before we get to doping and psychedelics, arguably the most controversial man in sport is discussing how he came to own the largest triceratops skull ever discovered. And how he plans to install it in his London apartment.

So how much did you pay for it, I ask Christian Angermayer, the German billionaire who has made fortunes from biotech, bitcoin and psychedelics and now intends to do the same again using – and many believe abusing – sport. “Not a lot, because I find them.”

Last season's runners-up, Punjab Kings, will aim to get back to winning ways when they host a struggling Delhi Capitals side at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala on Monday, May 11.

After a dream start to their campaign this season, PBKS suffered three back-to-back losses. However, they can climb back to the top of the table if then beat DC on Monday.

DC, on the other hand, have no other option but to win this game or else they will follow Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants out of the IPL 2026 playoff race.

Arya's Onslaught: A Masterclass in Power Hitting

In a spectacular display of power hitting, Priyansh Arya hammered 56 runs off just 33 balls, including a series of six sixes, to give Punjab Kings a formidable start in their IPL clash against Delhi Capitals on Monday.

Arya's aggressive approach at the scenic Dharamsala venue started from the get-go, as he took the seasoned Australian pacer Mitchell Starc to task with a costly over that conceded 22 runs. His early exploits set the tone for Punjab, aiming to set a high total despite the high altitude's challenging conditions for bowlers.

However, Delhi Capitals' bowlers, led impeccably by Aquib Nabi and a strategic rethink in their bowling lengths, turned the tide, ensuring Punjab couldn't capitalize fully and were restricted to a total of 210. Notably, Shreyas Iyer and Cooper Connolly attempted to steady the innings, combining for a partnership of 83 runs but fell short of accelerating towards the end.

Challenge Starmer by Monday or I will, Labour MP tells cabinet

Labour MP Catherine West has said if a cabinet minister does not challenge Sir Keir Starmer as party leader by Monday, she will attempt to trigger a leadership contest herself.

In an exclusive interview with the BBC, she said her preferred option would be for the cabinet to "reorganise themselves" and put forward their "best communicator" to replace Sir Keir, avoiding a leadership election.

But speaking after devastating election results for Labour, West said she was putting the cabinet "on notice" and if she did not hear from a leadership hopeful by Monday she would ask Labour MPs to back her to trigger a contest.

TVK’s Aadhav Arjuna Rules Out Alliance with AIADMK, Calls It ‘Rumours’

New Delhi: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) General Secretary for Campaign Management Aadhav Arjuna has firmly denied any alliance discussions with AIADMK or other parties, dismissing ongoing speculation as baseless.

“On alliance, it is all rumours. No AIADMK or left parties are approaching us. Yesterday our party meeting was purely technical and had nothing to do with such claims,” he said.

He further made it clear that there is no question of internal shifts, adding, “It goes without saying that TVK candidates won’t shift parties.”

Amid the political buzz, Arjuna, along with the party’s legal team, met Tamil Nadu Chief Election Officer Archana Patnaik and also submitted a letter seeking stronger security arrangements for counting day.

‘Coffee and tea don’t go well together’: Annamalai’s remark resurfaces amid AIADMK–TVK buzz

Chennai/IBNS: The buzz over a possible tie-up between the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam–Bharatiya Janata Party alliance and actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has triggered fresh political speculation, with indications that such a move could create cracks within the NDA, media reports said.

Senior BJP leader K. Annamalai had earlier ruled out any tie-up with TVK, citing sharp ideological differences.

“I have said many times that coffee and tea do not go well together. We are polar opposites ideologically,” he had told Times Now Digital.

Reports suggest that the AIADMK, led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami, may reach out to TVK in a post-poll scenario if no party secures a simple majority.

A crime movie hit starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie is rising on the streaming charts more than a decade later.

Both actors are major stars with both critical and commercial hits under their belts. The moment that will haunt NZ's first female UFC athlete

There is a lot Michelle Montague has taken away from her UFC debut.

The first New Zealand woman to compete in the world’s top mixed martial arts promotion, the 32-year-old from Matamata was strong on her way to a unanimous decision win in Perth last September.

    The fight
was one of several firsts for the Florida-based Kiwi, as it was also her first bout at bantamweight (61.2kg) and the first time she had been in a bout that allowed elbows to be used for striking.

Now, as she prepares for her return against No 12-ranked bantamweight Mayra Bueno Silva on the UFC card in Las Vegas this weekend, Montague is taking all of those lessons on board.

Myra Bueno Silva – Michelle Montague: who will show class in the UFC fight?

Mayra Bueno Silva now resembles a fighter who seems to have lost his inner rhythm. After losing to Raquel Pennington in a title fight in 2024, something in her mechanism malfunctioned. And if that loss could be attributed to the level of opposition and the pressure of status, then an alarming series has already gone on. The defeat from Maisie Chiasson was through a cut, painful and insulting. Then there were two verdicts against Jasmin Jasudavicius and Jacqueline Cavalcanti. And there's no hiding here — the numbers speak for themselves. In the battle with Cavalcanti, there were only 39 accurate strikes against 80 missed ones.  At the same time, her base has not gone anywhere: a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, seven wins by submission — this is serious. The statistics also don't look scary anymore: ten wins with six losses.

Miles is a dynamic pass-first point guard. She finished seventh in the nation with an average of 6.6 assists, and that aspect of her game could take another leap playing alongside a higher level of talent and creator than she had on the roster at TCU. Her shooting has improved since her breakout seasons at Notre Dame. Her defense needs improvement, but her court vision is good enough to justify teams taking her high, and Minnesota needed a young point guard.

Azzi Fudd is the second daughter of a former draftee to be selected in the draft herself. In 2001, Katie Fudd (then Katie Smrcka-Duffy) was picked No 62 overall by the Sacramento Monarchs. Pamela McGee and Imani McGee-Stafford were the first.

WNBA Draft: Azzi Fudd, Olivia Miles, Awa Fam in contention for No. 1 pick

After back-to-back years in which the top pick in the WNBA Draft was a foregone conclusion — Caitlin Clark to the Indiana Fever in 2024, Paige Bueckers to the Dallas Wings in 2025 — the No. 1 in the 2026 iteration remained a mystery all the way until the first pick's announcement Monday.

TCU guard Olivia Miles, and Spanish center Awa Fam, also were considered in the running.

Fudd, 23, averaged 17.3 points per game in her final collegiate season, her best scoring season for the Huskies. She won a championship in 2025 with Bueckers as her teammate, but she struggled in the tournament this year. In her last three games at UConn, Fudd averaged only 10.3 points, scoring only eight in a season-ending loss to South Carolina in the Final Four.
