'No win, no trim' – why a haircut became a problem for Man Utd

Frank Ilett has partnered with commercial brands as interest around his challenge has grown

What began as a light-hearted idea shared online has, in 493 days, grown into something far bigger than its creator ever anticipated.

Frank Ilett, also known as The United Strand, posted a video on 5 October 2024, where he gave himself his last haircut until Manchester United won five games in a row.

On the video, he had a poll asking his relatively small following when they thought his next haircut would be: in 2024, 2025 or 2026? Of the 27,000 responses, 90% said 2026. After snatching a 1-1 draw at West Ham on Tuesday, the wait goes on.

When Did Man Utd Last Win Five Games in a Row?

A club as historically successful as Manchester United knows that consistency is often what underpins that success.

Consistency, in this case putting multiple wins together, sets you apart from the competition, and is something that has ultimately been lacking.

United’s inability to string wins together under Ruben Amorim was an issue. The most the Portuguese achieved was three, which he did twice—one early in his reign against Rangers, Fulham and FCSB, and another towards the end against Liverpool, Sunderland and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Michael Carrick has already matched and surpassed that in his opening four games as interim manager. Despite being tasked with facing Manchester City and Arsenal straight off the bat, Carrick quickly found what works, adding wins against the Premier League’s top two with follow-up victories over Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur. Now, beating West Ham United on Tuesday could make it five.

    Will today be the day?

Barbers, ready your scissors. And perhaps plan to stay open a little later than usual tonight.

Manchester United have the opportunity to win five successive matches but perhaps more importantly, for some at least, Frank Ilett, also known as The United Strand, may be allowed to cut his hair.

Ilett posted a video on 5 October 2024 where he vowed not to cut his hair until United won five games in a row and now, 493 days later, he is one victory over relegation-threatened West Ham away from another.

Over the last 493 days, the reach of the story has grown so much so that Ilett has garnered 2.3 million followers on social media, while Red Devils interim manager Michael Carrick and captain Bruno Fernandes have even asked about it.

MILAN — After three days of dramatic and often surprising competition, the United States claimed the Olympic gold medal in the figure skating team competition on Sunday night.

After carrying a five-point lead into the final day of the event, the Americans found themselves locked in a tie with Japan entering the men's free skate, the last segment of the competition.

It would all come down to Ilia Malinin, the two-time reigning world champion in his debut Olympics. The 21-year-old had struggled with nerves during his short program Saturday and stepped out of his triple axel before under-rotating his quad lutz to finish in a staggering second place — a rarity for him and more than 10 points out of first.

Ilia Malinin didn’t execute the move that only he has ever produced in competition, the quadruple axel. At one point of his risqué routine, he faltered, lost balance and nearly fell hands first onto the ice.

Malinin, figure skating’s greatest performer at just 21, had the gold medal riding on his blades as America’s last skater in the teams event. In normal circumstances, a blunder of that magnitude would potentially cost his team the gold.

Opinion | Why a Seattle Seahawks win would be good for America

By mandating that his football team be sold to fund multiple charitable causes, late Seahawks owner Paul Allen exhibited a generosity that we should hope other billionaires, sports owners or otherwise, follow.

UPDATE (Feb. 8, 2026, 10:25 p.m. ET): On Sunday night, the Seattle Seahawks easily defeated the New England Patriots by a score of 29-13 to earn their second championship in franchise history.

There’s almost no good time for a sports fanatic to hear about the potential sale of their team, but it’s hard to imagine a worse time to hear it than right after that team earns a trip to the Super Bowl. So it is, though, for Seattle Seahawks fans, who have likely heard the whispers that whether their team wins or loses the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots on Sunday, the franchise could be put up for sale.

Who is Jody Allen, and what's next for Seattle Seahawks ownership?

The family resemblance was unmistakable for any Seattle Seahawks or Portland Trail Blazers fan, but the name was different.

When Jody Allen raised the Lombardi Trophy after the Seahawks' 29-13 domination of the New England Patriots on Feb. 8, it was reasonable that fans of a certain age flashed back to when Jody's brother, longtime Seahawks and Blazers owner and Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, did the same 12 years ago.

Jody Allen, 67, is chair of the Seahawks, which are owned by the Paul G. Allen Trust, the entity to manage the estate of Paul Allen, who died on Oct. 15, 2018, after a battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Here's what to know about the Allens and ownership of the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks.

Who owns the Seattle Seahawks? It's complicated

The Seattle Seahawks will soon appear in the Super Bowl. But who owns the team?

Super Bowl 60 takes place Feb. 8 between the Seahawks and New England Patriots.

The Patriots have a well-known owner, Robert Kraft. Meanwhile, the Seahawks' ownership is unconventional compared to some other teams in the NFL.

The Seahawks are owned by the Paul G. Allen Trust, the estate of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. Allen bought the Seahawks in 1997, according to ESPN, and remained the owner until he died in 2018. Allen's sister, Jody Allen, is the trustee and executor of the estate and is in control of the team.

Talking Points From Win Over Stars

Perth Scorchers secured top spot on the KFC BBL|15 ladder, toppling Melbourne Stars by six wickets before a Club record regular season crowd at Optus Stadium.

Below are the central talking points from a win that place the Scorchers in prime position for a title tilt. The FinnisherFresh from his maiden Big Bash hundred against Melbourne Renegades two days ago, Finn Allen (69) was the centrepiece of the Scorchers’ chase with a knock of arguably more significance. There was the standard array of fireworks, many behind square over the legside, as the powerful right-handder launched seven balls into the stands. But it was Allen’s composure and clarity that shone brightest while early wickets fell around him, executing most of the calculated risks he took – with a dash of luck thrown in the mix – en route to his third 50+ score of BBL|15. Allen finished the regular season as his team’s leading run-scorer (381), has the competition’s fourth-highest strike rate (189.55), and will cause headaches for all strategists plotting the Scorchers’ demise in finals. The only downside to Allen’s form is the risk he poses should Australia meet the Kiwi opener in full flight during next month’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.Golden arm does it againCooper Connolly (2-18 from three overs) reinforced is invaluable knack for striking in the first over of an innings, removing Stars pair Tom Rogers and Joe Clarke with the game’s third and fourth deliveries. Rogers, who started with consecutive boundaries, top-edged to Mahli Beardman at short fine leg, before Connolly speared one into Clarke’s middle stump the very next ball. Having opened the bowling six times in BBL|15, the reigning BBL Player of the Tournament has now taken five scalps in four of those overs. Connolly also leads the team for wickets with 13 at 15.38 (second) and an economy of 6.66 (second), bettered only by Ashton Turner (3-2 from two overs) in those categories. He’s backIt was only a matter of time before star quick Jhye Richardson hit his straps, taking 4-16 from 3.2 overs in an emphatic return to form. The skilful right-armer was on from the outset, dismissing the competition’s second-highest run-scorer, Sam Harper, in his first over. A double-wicket maiden in the 17th over was the pinnacle of a stunning performance, removing superstar Glenn Maxwell and Haris Rauf in consecutive deliveries. The latter of those saw Richardson sprint at full tilt to complete a skied return catch near short leg, showcasing serious competitive hunger given Josh Inglis and Cooper Connolly were both in the area. Richardson bowled with decent pace, extreme skill and impressive match awareness, setting him up for an enormous finals campaign. David and GoliathWhenever his team needs a big wicket, British left-armer David Payne is so often the man who answers the call. Marcus Stoinis was humming on 55 from 39 when Payne angled a length ball towards off stump across the Stars skipper, who picked out Richardson at short third man. This season alone, his victims include Marcus Stoinis and Chris Lynn, while a flu-riddled Payne was famously responsible for removing an in-form Steve Smith early in the BBL|12 Qualifier. A vital addition in the back half of the season with considerable experience and variations galore, Payne’s commendable tally of six wickets from four games doesn’t do justice to the impact he’s had.  MATCH DETAILS

Recent Match Report – Perth Scorchers vs Melbourne Stars, Big Bash League 2025, 39th Match | ESPN.com.au

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

Perth Scorchers 134 for 4 (Allen 69, Hardie 41*, Rauf 3-23) beat Melbourne Stars 130 (Stoinis 55, Richardson 4-16) by six wickets

Jhye Richardson spearheaded a slick attack before Finn Allen blasted a half-century under pressure as Perth Scorchers clinched the all-important top position on the BBL ladder in a result that means Melbourne Stars will be thrust into a knockout final.

There was much at stake in the penultimate match of the regular season with the teams fighting for first place and a double chance in the finals.

Amid a record regular season crowd in Perth of 48,608, Scorchers secured two home finals after Richardson claimed 4 for 16 to restrict Stars to a lowly 130 before Allen hit 69 off 39 balls having capitalised on two dropped chances.

Shafali Verma on her knock in the 2nd T20I against Sri Lanka (1:36)

Two matches, two big wins. India have stamped their authority on the series, outclassing Sri Lanka across departments. On both occasions, the top order has taken control of modest chases set up by a ruthless bowling unit picking up wickets in clusters. After a few lapses in the field in the opening T20I, India tightened up in the second, leaving little room for error.

Sri Lanka, clearly, have found the going tough. While a handful of batters managed to get starts in both games, there was a visible lack of intent resulting in sub-130 totals. Their bowlers, too, struggled to extract help from the surface with dew not helping matters. With several changes made to the squad and several youngsters drafted in, this series marks a phase of transition for Sri Lanka. The onus is now on the new faces to seize their opportunities and push their case ahead of next year's T20 World Cup starting June 12.
