‘We had a date with destiny’: De la Fuente lauds Spain players after World Cup victory

Spain’s manager, Luis de la Fuente, hailed his players for fulfilling what he described as “their destiny” by winning a second World Cup final against 10-man Argentina.

The reigning champions were second best throughout but it took until the second period of extra time for Spain to find the breakthrough from the substitute, Ferran Torres. Nico Williams saw his goal disallowed in the first half of extra time, while Enzo Fernández became the sixth player – and third from Argentina – to be sent off in a World Cup final after the Chelsea midfielder was shown a second yellow card in the 93rd minute.

Bobby Hill begins talks with Collingwood over ending contract

Norm Smith medallist Bobby Hill appears to have played his last game for Collingwood.

7NEWS can reveal conversations have commenced between Hill’s management and the Pies to finalise his departure from the club.

An agreement to cease the 26-year-old’s contract is expected in coming weeks.

Hill signed a contract in April last year to remain with the Pies until 2030 worth approximately $750,000 per season.

Hill made sporadic returns from personal leave to the Magpies throughout 2026 and played the last of three VFL games in May.

Collingwood officials headlined by coach Craig McRae made repeated attempts to support Hill’s wellbeing away from the club.

Collingwood forward set for departure as three clubs pose as potential destinations

Collingwood forward Bobby Hill is unlikely to play for the club again, with reports indicating the Pies have commenced talks with his management to terminate his contract.

Since midway through last year, Hill has failed to be at the club consistently, playing only one half of football amid multiple periods of personal leave.

The 2023 Norm Smith medallist made attempts to return to the senior side, including three VFL appearances in May.

According to Channel Seven, Hill would be open to continuing his career in Queensland, while Port Adelaide also presents as a potential destination given the strong Indigenous cohort.

However, it is understood clubs are yet to make a move for Hill. His contract runs until the end of 2030, a deal he signed in April last year.

Infantino’s Faustian bargain with Trump has stained football’s biggest stage

The Fifa president sought influence with the US leader. Instead, Fifa’s president has entangled football in politics and wounded the game’s credibility

Ever since the United States won the rights to co-host the 2026 World Cup, Fifa president Gianni Infantino has worked to ingratiate himself with Donald Trump at all costs, supposedly to secure preferential treatment for Fifa from the American government. Predictably, he suffered the same fate as everyone who has made a Faustian bargain with the US president: he learned that cozying up to Trump always backfires, tarnishing the entire sport along the way.

I love soccer because, at its best, it is inclusive, democratic and accessible to everyone. So do billions of other people; the sport’s universal cultural impact truly lends it the potential to be a force for good that “unites the world”, as Fifa loves to say. We saw this force in action at the start of the World Cup when, despite Trump’s hardline anti-immigrant and anti-foreigner policies, the prevailing sentiment showed that visiting teams and fans found most Americans really are warm and welcoming people.

Who is Gianni Infantino? Inside FIFA president's relationship with Trump

Editor's note:Follow for live updates on Argentina-Spain World Cup final

Gianni Infantino once walked into the Oval Office carrying a gift. The FIFA president had a personalized ticket to the 2026 World Cup final. Row 1, Seat 1 for the U.S. president.

On Sunday, President Donald Trump will use it. And when Spain and Argentina finish playing at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., Trump will join Infantino on the field to help hand the trophy to the winner.

"We will be together with the president enjoying the final and handing the trophy to the winner, of course, together," Infantino said.

Piastri gives update amid Verstappen to McLaren reports

Oscar Piastri believes he will remain with McLaren next season despite speculation that Max Verstappen will replace him.

Oscar Piastri has offered an update on his position with McLaren amid ongoing speculation that Max Verstappen will replace him at the team.

Rumours have continued in recent months about a possible move for four-time World Champion Verstappen to McLaren, where he would replace Piastri and partner Lando Norris.

Piastri's manager and ex-F1 driver, Mark Webber, stated that “there has been a lot of fiction written” about the potential driver move, while McLaren CEO Zak Brown has publicly stated he his happy with his current line-up.

‘I get paid a lot of money to do those things’: Piastri on swap rumours and life off the track

Oscar Piastri had the 2025 drivers’ championship all but won. Until he didn’t. Now there are rumours of his ousting from the McLaren team. But the laconic young Aussie says he’s “not going anywhere”.

The famously unflappable McLaren driver has a cool and calm demeanour. His podium celebrations are understated and his stoic and sometimes sarcastically deadpan responses over F1 radios have generated memes.

So it’s unsurprising that whispers of a potential Max Verstappen defection to McLaren – which could knock the Australian out of the papaya-coloured English team – don’t bother him.

“I think from where I sit, I’m very comfortable in the position I’m at,” Piastri said, speaking exclusively to this masthead before the Belgian Grand Prix.

Keating pushes to merge Centrelink with superannuation

Former prime minister Paul Keating – the architect of the nation’s sprawling $4.5 trillion superannuation sector – has told the government to integrate its public social security system with the private retirement savings sector, in what would be the single biggest shake-up of the aged pension in decades.

The radical proposal to merge parts of Centrelink into the big superannuation funds came as Aware Super chief executive Deanne Stewart told a meeting that a growing number of retired Australians were drawing down only minimal amounts from their nest eggs because they feared running out of money.

A previous version of this story cited Wayne Swan as saying there was merit in Paul Keating’s idea to merge Centrelink and super. This has been clarified to reflect that Swan only agreed that super funds needed to provide more guidance in retirement.

Sir Nick Faldo puts forward completely new solution to solve rollback problem

Sir Nick Faldo believes shortening tees could be an answer to the golf ball roll-back debate.

The proposed golf ball rollback spearheaded by the United States Golf Association and R&A was pushed back until January 2030, and the two announced they will change how the golf balls are tested throughout the overall distance standard. The proposed changes were initially supposed to be in effect by 2028, but it was postponed thanks to more discussions needed on the topic.

Faldo, though, has an interesting approach to the fix that has nothing to do with the ball.

Lukaku Continues to Make History with Record-Breaking Goals for Belgium

Romelu Lukaku has further solidified his place as one of Belgium's greatest players with a stunning performance, scoring a goal in the 4-1 victory over the United States, which secured their spot in the World Cup quarter-finals. He has now netted 93 goals in 131 international matches, extending his lead as Belgium's all-time top scorer across all competitions.

The Belgian forward also set a new record as the highest scorer for his country in World Cup history, reaching 8 goals in the tournament and proving his decisive presence on the global stage.

Lukaku achieved another historic milestone by becoming the first player in World Cup history to score 3 goals as a substitute in the same edition, a remarkable feat that highlights his significant impact even when coming off the bench.

De Laurentiis: ‘Allegri and I will get along well, Napoli have received 200 offers for players’

Aurelio De Laurentiis has made clear that Napoli’s priority this summer is to trim a heavily bloated squad rather than add to it, while backing new head coach Massimiliano Allegri to fit seamlessly into his vision for the club.

Speaking at the presentation of Napoli’s new home kit, via the Corriere dello Sport, the president was asked about the club’s transfer plans and pointed to the sheer volume of players on the books as the issue to resolve first.

“In the last month I must have received 200 proposals for players to sign, but I told them to stay calm: we have 47 players, and we need to place 25 before we can talk,” De Laurentiis said. “In my opinion we won’t need to buy anyone and will give away many.”

SSC Napoli's squad trimming push highlights growing role of fan tokens in football economics

President De Laurentiis says the club received roughly 200 transfer proposals but must sell before buying, while Napoli's blockchain partnerships quietly reshape how clubs monetize fandom.

Aurelio De Laurentiis, the president of SSC Napoli, has drawn a line in the sand ahead of the 2026-27 season. The club must offload players before bringing anyone new through the door.

De Laurentiis says Napoli has received approximately 200 transfer proposals, but the priority is trimming a bloated roster that currently includes the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Kevin De Bruyne.

De Laurentiis put it plainly: Napoli “must trim the squad before thinking about any additions.”

Midwife hit with $70,000 foreign investment tax after moving to Australia from UK

British midwife Kate Griffiths and her husband Mark gave up a lot to come to Australia.  (ABC News: Stephen Opie)

Kate Griffiths moved to Australia from the United Kingdom in 2024 to work at the Whyalla Hospital birthing unit during a statewide midwives shortage.

Ms Griffiths and husband Mark bought a home in Whyalla in 2025, but because of the timing, she was charged $70,000 by state and federal authorities.

Ms Griffiths says she will keep pursuing the ATO for the amount she was charged by it.

A midwife who moved to Australia on the promise of permanent residency from SA Health is calling for changes to the law, after she was slugged $70,000 by state and federal authorities for the purchase of her home.
