Case of Texas woman on death row over grisly murder back in spotlight

New film revives story of Taylor Parker, convicted in 2022 of cutting unborn daughter from womb of friend she killed

In an America so often saturated with brutal crime stories, it takes special circumstances to truly register shock.

But the story of Taylor Parker, now sitting on a Texas death row after being convicted of murdering her pregnant friend Reagan Simmons-Hancock in 2020 and cutting her unborn daughter Braxlynn from her womb, is horrific in part because it appears almost against nature itself.

Such a terrifying act is also rare. Fetal abductions by maternal evisceration number just 15 in the US from 1987 to 2011, and perhaps 100 worldwide. Until 1973, none had ever been recorded in the US.

The documentary Maternal Instinct explores the murder of 21-year-old Reagan Simmons Hancock, a pregnant woman who was found dead in New Boston, Texas, with her unborn child stolen in October 2020.

Investigators eventually connected the horrific murder to Taylor Parker, a 27-year-old woman who claimed to be pregnant, who was convicted in 2022 for killing Hancock and is now on death row in Texas.

A woman in Arizona who went missing 32 years ago, when she was just 13 years old, has been found alive, authorities said this week.

Christina Marie Plante was reported missing in May 1994 from Star Valley, Arizona, after she “vanished without a trace from her community”, according to a statement released on Wednesday by the Gila county sheriff’s office.

Investigators said that she was last seen leaving her home on foot to go to the stable where her horse was, and “was not seen again”.

A 13-year-old Arizona girl who disappeared nearly 32 years ago has been found alive, the Gila County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

The disappearance of Christina Marie Plante from Star Valley, a small community in a mountainous area northeast of Phoenix, in 1994 sparked an extensive search that included volunteers, the sheriff’s office said.

Although the case went cold, it was never closed, and it was periodically re-reviewed, the sheriff’s office said. It was assigned to a cold case unit after the unit was formed.

“Utilizing advances in technology, modern investigative techniques, and detailed case review, detectives developed new leads that ultimately led to a breakthrough,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

A 19-year-old Canadian woman found dead on the beach on a popular tourist island off the Queensland coast on Monday morning was discovered surrounded by a pack of dingoes.

But despite confirming her body had been “touched and interfered with” by the wild canids on K’gari (formerly known as Fraser Island), police say they will await a postmortem before speculating as to the cause of her death.

Wide Bay Burnett District Patrol Insp Paul Algie told reporters Monday afternoon that the young woman had been working at a backpacker hostel on the eastern beaches.

¡Cancha brava! South American football in dispute

The exhibition, curated by Luiza Romão, Matias Pinto, and Gisele de Paula, offers a historical, political, and poetic journey through the subcontinent based on football. It explores audiovisual installations, soundscapes, interactive experiences, photographs, and artworks, many of which were produced exclusively for the exhibition. Sponsors of the exhibition include Mercado Livre, Arkema, Goodyear, Farmacêutica EMS, and Itaú, with additional support from Adidas, Grupo Globo, Pinheiro Neto, Zanchetta, and Sabesp—all through the Federal Culture Incentive Law, Lei Rouanet.

As the title suggests, the exhibition is bilingual, exploring the intersections between Portuguese and Spanish. Cancha is a word of Quechua origin that means both ‘popcorn’ and ‘field’. And Brava means both “angry” and “great”. Together, they describe the fans who support and follow their teams intensely and unconditionally, everywhere, through thick and thin. !Cancha Brava! is thus a synthesis of the history of our football, comprising a lot of passion, peculiarities and fifty-fifty balls.
