Australian dairy farmgate milk prices | Woolworths Phasing Out Farmers’ Own Direct Milk Supply Model

Australian retail giant Woolworths has confirmed plans to phase out its landmark “Farmers’ Own” milk brand across national stores as existing supplier contracts reach their expiration dates. Originally launched in 2013 as a direct-procurement initiative bypassing traditional corporate processors, the brand allowed regional farming collectives to negotiate farmgate pricing directly with the retail chain. The product line has already been withdrawn from retail shelves across South Australia and is slated to disappear from New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, and Western Australia by mid-2027 as remaining agreements expire.

The discontinuation marks a strategic shift in Woolworths’ private-label dairy procurement strategy away from direct farmer contracts toward centralized processor arrangements. Launched over a decade ago in the NSW Manning Valley, the Farmers’ Own model was initially hailed as a groundbreaking structural reform that granted primary producers enhanced bargaining leverage and transparent pricing. However, evolving retail distribution logistics, processing overheads, and shifting supply-chain economics have led the supermarket operator to wind down direct-sourcing partnerships in favor of standard commercial procurement.

Woolworths permanently brings back sold out $10 item after 'hugely successful' limited run: 'We've listened'

Woolworths has listened to shopper demand and is making the sold out $10 Cinnabon Cake a permanent part of its bakery offering. The delicious cake landed in supermarkets last year as a limited-time offering and they flew off the shelves.

Woolies said some stores saw the cake sell out within hours of stock arrive, and 55,000 were bought in just five days. Donald Keith, Woolworths Bakery Merchandise Manager, said it's clear shoppers want to have this item return for good.

"Customers have been asking about the Cinnabon Cake's return since the moment it left our shelves last year," he said.

"The overwhelming feedback made it clear that a limited run wasn't enough.

    Woolworths’ Cinnabon Cake returns

Woolworths is bringing back the viral Cinnabon Cake, and this time it’s here to stay.

Returning to shelves from 22 February, the cake will move from its previous limited-edition status to become a permanent member of the Woolworths bakery lineup all-year-round.

According to the retailer, the move follows a hugely successful limited run last year, which saw more than 55,000 cakes sold in just five days. The demand was so significant that many stores sold out within hours of stock arriving.

“Customers have been asking about the Cinnabon Cake’s return since the moment it left our shelves last year,” says Woolworths Bakery Merchandise Manager Donald Keith.

Woolworths is making its viral Cinnabon Cake a permanent addition to its in-store bakery range from February 22.

The move follows a limited run last year that saw more than 55,000 cakes sold in just five days, with demand high enough that many stores sold out within hours of stock arriving.

Previously available for a short time only, the Cinnabon Cake will now be stocked year-round across Woolworths Supermarkets and Metro stores nationwide.

“Customers have been asking about the Cinnabon Cake’s return since the moment it left our shelves last year,” said Donald Keith, Woolworths Bakery Merchandise Manager.

Amazon to challenge Woolworths, Coles with Harris Farm fresh food deal

Amazon will deliver fresh food to homes in Australia for the first time after striking an agreement with Harris Farm Markets in a move that will intensify competition between the American online retailing giant and the country’s two largest supermarkets, Woolworths and Coles

The deliveries will initially be rolled out in inner Sydney, with free delivery for purchases of over $100 for Amazon Prime subscribers. Both major supermarkets, which have pointed to the online giant as proof that there is significant competition in the industry, have invested heavily in their home delivery, which represents a quickly growing share of revenues.

Amazon has made its first foray into fresh produce deliveries after striking a partnership with premium grocery chain Harris Farm, putting the international megastore into direct competition with Coles’ and Woolworths’ core products.

From Wednesday, Sydneysiders in 80 suburbs will be able to buy thousands of items across Harris Farm’s fresh produce, bakery, butcher and fish market range, with the only exception of frozen food, through the upmarket retailer’s page on Amazon’s website.

Arno Lenior, Amazon Asia Pacific’s director of its Prime subscription shopping program, said the company’s essentials category had been growing rapidly. “It has seen more than 30 per cent growth year-on-year,” Lenior said.
