World Cup 2026: Alphonso Davies in Canada squad despite recent injuries

Head coach Jesse Marsch has included Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies in what he described the best 26-man squad "ever assembled" by co-hosts Canada for this summer's World Cup.

Davies, 25, was deemed sufficiently fit for inclusion despite recovering from a hamstring injury, while Juventus forward Jonathan David also makes the cut.

Porto midfielder Stephen Eustaquio, Villarreal's Tajon Buchanan and Tani Oluwaseyi, and Southampton forward Cyle Larin are all included.

"We have really our best group of 26 players that this country has ever assembled at any one time," said Marsch.

"Are all of them right now at full 100%? No, but they're close," he added, signalling frustration at the repeated questions from media about players' injuries.

Who is in and who is out? Canada men's national team roster revealed

Canada men’s national team head coach Jesse Marsch has announced his 26-player roster for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup from the team’s pre-tournament base in Charlotte, North Carolina. Canada will host the tournament alongside the United States and Mexico and will open the tournament in Toronto against Bosnia on June 12. Canada will then face Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24 in Switzerland.

Marsch took 32 players to the pre-tournament camp south of the border. Six players were cut today. Among defenders, Ralph Priso, Zorhan Bassong and Jamie Knight-Lebel failed to make the team. Marsch also cut midfielder Jayden Nelson and forwards Jacen Russell-Rowe and Daniel Jebbison. Jebbison might have been the biggest surprise, as Jacob Shaffelburg was included in the squad instead.

The latest news as co-hosts USA and Canada get their World Cup campaigns under way

With that, here’s the second day’s action kicking off. That closes today’s news blog; back tomorrow for more.

double quotation markEternal infamy for Yaya Sithole, whose second-half red card was probably salvation after an all-timer in defensive calamity. The unsheathing of that red, and two others, made the Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio his own history. There was a lovely moment for Raúl Jiménez, too, as he got on the scoresheet before the Mexican fans booed their team for not piling on the agony for a South African side whose performance was so dreadful it left Quinton Fortune, Aaron Mokoena and Benni McCarthy, South African TV pundits, in speechless catatonia. “What do we say, what went wrong in this game?” asked the anchorman. Answer came there none.

Hosting the enemy: America's FIFA World Cup

FIFA President Gianni Infantino this week strenuously defended the decision to host the World Cup across three countries: The US, Canada and Mexico.

Even before kick-off time, the tournament was mired in controversy over ticket pricing, accommodation and transport arrangements, along with the decision to allow the Iranian team entry to the US despite an ongoing war.

Why the economics make this the craziest World Cup ever

Football World Cups are rarely completely politics-free but never has the beautiful game navigated a geopolitical high-wire act of this kind. The main host is at war with a participant, whose team must commute in on match days from another country.

Add to that the quite astonishing coincidence of the US, Canada and Mexico, the three co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup, being in the midst of an epic trade war. Indeed, in the period in between the opening ceremony at the Estadio Azteca, and the final in New Jersey's MetLife Stadium, the three will be renegotiating the USMCA, the North American free trade area.

Who will win the FIFA World Cup? Why Australia could go further than you think

SBS acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country and their connections and continuous care for the skies, lands and waterways throughout Australia.

Can reigning champions Argentina go back-to-back? Can the Netherlands finally end its decades-long World Cup curse? And just how far can tiny Curaçao go?

Those are burning questions on the minds of football fans as we head into this year's FIFA World Cup, with an expanded 48-team tournament likely to deliver more story lines, drama and fairy-tale finishes than ever before.

Spain, second under FIFA's World ranking, is widely tipped to take home the trophy, while Argentina (first), France (third), England (fourth), Portugal (fifth) and Brazil (sixth) are also considered top contenders.

Fifa World Cup: NZME experts predict the winners and where the All Whites will finish

With the Fifa World Cup kicking off tomorrow morning, NZME staff share their thoughts on how they see the tournament playing out, including where the All Whites will finish.

Cameron McMillan: I’m not expecting a first-time winner and am expecting either Spain,
France, Argentina or Brazil to be lifting the trophy at the end. Amazing Spain haven’t reached the quarter-finals since winning the title in 2010. Feel like the draw could open up in their favour if they top their group.

Alex Powell: As the reigning European champions, it’s hard to see Spain not going very far in this tournament. Spain’s style of prioritising possession and breaking teams down with a death-by-1000-cuts mentality is perfect for tournaments and with how the modern game is officiated.

A World Cup guide for new football fans

It's difficult to miss the buzz and excitement surrounding the Fifa World Cup.

Football (or soccer, as they call it in North America) is the world's most popular sport and the World Cup is the most prestigious prize of them all.

For the first time in the tournament's nearly 100-year history, it will be jointly hosted by three countries – Mexico, Canada and the United States.

The opening match will be played in Mexico City on 11 June. And the final is in the US state of New Jersey on 19 July.

For anyone new to the beautiful game, here's what you need to know:

Don’t have time to watch 72 World Cup group games? Here are 10 not to miss

Watching 108 hours of football is not for everyone but there are some crackers in the group stage, including Scotland v Brazil, Netherlands v Japan and France v Senegal

The days of watching every game at the World Cup are long gone for most of us. The expansion to 48 teams means 72 group games will be played just to narrow the competition down to 32 sides – the number we have had at the last seven tournaments. Fans will have to sit through 108 hours of group-stage football – plus a lot of injury time and drinks breaks – just to get to the number of teams we have become accustomed to since 1998.

Everything You Need To Know About The 2026 Men's FIFA World Cup – Behind The News

FIFA WORLD CUP The 2026 Men's FIFA World Cup kicks off very early tomorrow morning. It's the biggest competition on the planet for a single sport. Over 39 days, 48 countries will battle it out in huge stadiums across North America. The World Cup only happens every four years, much like the Olympics. This year, more than 5 billion people are expected to watch at some point, that's more than half of all humans on Earth. Australia's World Cup hopes rest on these guys, the Socceroos, who will first clash against Türkiye on Sunday during what's called the group stage. The week after they'll take on the US, then Paraguay a week later. But what happens next is anyone's guess. The teams then filter through to the knockout stage where the stakes will get higher and higher building up to the final, when the world will be glued to their screens anxiously riding the highs and lows to find out who gets the glory, more than 70 million dollars in prize money and of course the World Cup trophy. This spectacle has already had plenty of controversy, there's been concerns about super high ticket prices, threats of boycotts and some competing countries are literally at war with each other. But many soccer fans are hoping to put all this aside, uniting the world for an epic tournament.DOCTOR WHO FUTUREThere seems to be a bit of uncertainty over the future of Doctor Who. The BBC announced last year that there'd be a Doctor Who festive special in 2026, but have now said that's not going to happen. Meanwhile, the show's showrunner, Russell T Davies, has shared in an Instagram post that he'll be leaving the program just four years after returning. The BBC say they're looking at getting other production companies to help co-produce the next series and a lot of fans have been sharing their concerns that the show could be no more.SAGRADA FAMILIAA big church in Barcelona, which is famous for being incomplete, has reached a new milestone and the Pope was there to celebrate the occasion. Five million people from around the world step through its gates of the Sagrada Familia every year. It's known for being the tallest church in the world at 172.5 metres. Oh and it's been in construction for the past 144 years. The church began construction in 1882 with the first design by Francisco de Paula del Villar. But then got flicked over to architect Antoni Gaudi. His plans were a lot more ambitious, but he died in 1926 before he could see it through. His designs were then destroyed during the Spanish Civil War in 1936. That made things pretty tricky and pretty slow because of the church's super complex design and funding the construction relied heavily on donations. But now the church has just reached a new milestone with the completion of the centre pinnacle, the Tower of Jesus Christ. To celebrate, Pope Leo XI was there to inaugurate it, and commemorate the 100th anniversary of Gaudi's death during his week long trip to Spain which saw 120,000 people line the streets. While the goal was to have the church completely finished this year, that's now been pushed back to 2035.UNEARTHED HIGH Triple J has announced the winners of this year's Unearthed High competition. This year it's Trophy Wyfe who were named the winners. The band hails from Newcastle in NSW and they were pretty stoked with the news.HOBBIT BATTLEHundreds of people in the Czech Republic have gathered in a forest dressed as Elves, Dwarves and Orcs for an annual re-creation of a battle from The Hobbit.PYGMY HIPPOA baby Pygmy Hippo that was born at Berlin Zoo last month has just been given the name Brotchen, which is a German word that translate to Bread Roll.

This year's edition of the FIFA World Cup is promising to be bigger than ever, in terms of the number of teams, matches, hosts and the spectacle at the matches themselves.

EV maker aims to overtake Toyota, as it plans to spend £1.8bn to build five-minute flash chargers in Europe

The Chinese car company BYD has said it aims to be the world’s biggest automaker within the next five years.

Targeting Toyota’s long-held top spot, BYD’s founder and chair, Wang Chuanfu said he was confident it could overtake global rivals through rapid advances in battery technology and fast charging, as well as growing production overseas, including Europe.

“BYD will truly become the number one automaker globally in terms of scale in five years,” he said at the company’s annual shareholder meeting in Shenzhen.

BYD outsold Ford, and now it thinks it can catch Toyota as the world’s No. 1 automaker

BYD is already the world’s largest EV maker, but the company’s CEO is confident it will become the world’s leading global automaker within the next five years.

After it stopped making cars powered solely by internal combustion engines (ICE) in 2022 to focus on battery electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles, BYD’s big bet has paid off so far.

With over 4.6 million new energy vehicles (NEVs) sold last year, which includes EVs and PHEVs, BYD surpassed Ford for the first time, ranking as the sixth largest global automaker.

According to BYD’s CEO, Wang Chuanfu, the Chinese EV giant is just getting started with new battery and charging tech set to drive growth over the next few years.

The FIFA World Cup is the biggest single-sport event on the planet and has delivered numerous historical moments, from Diego Maradona's "hand of God" in 1986 to Zinedine Zidane's infamous headbutt on Marco Materazzi.

2026 will be the biggest and most expensive World Cup to date, spread across Mexico, the United States, and Canada, with 48 teams competing from the biggest and best to some of the globe's smallest countries.

Australia will be right in there, named in a group with co-host the United States.

The World Cup will officially start with the opening ceremony at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Friday morning (AEST), which will precede the tournament's first match between Mexico and South Africa at 5am.

How the World Cup became an $80bn behemoth. Plus: Behind the last Beatles gigs

It’s long been a golden rule of sport that football World Cups get bigger and badder every four years. The latest edition of the tournament, however, may put that universal law to the test after a six-week journey through Trump’s America, which is expected to generate $80bn of global economic output through its full timeline.

As the world’s biggest sporting event meets the world’s biggest market, it’s hard to see how even the World Cup can get much more bloated than this. But if anyone can make it happen it’s Gianni Infantino, the opportunist Fifa overlord who has schmoozed with the planet’s most divisive leaders to extract maximum gains from his travelling global roadshow. As Barney Ronay says in his tournament scenesetter for our cover story this week, welcome to the heart of darkness.

World Cup 2026: John and Harry Souttar – Two brothers, two nations, one World Cup & how grief bound them

John Souttar (left) will feature for Scotland at the World Cup this summer, while brother Harry (right) represents Australia

Young John and younger Harry wanted their hair like his. They bought the same clothes and the same shoes. They copied his music taste.

A talented golfer and a lover of football, Aaron also played a significant role in shaping the careers of Harry and John, who will represent Australia and Scotland respectively in the World Cup this summer.

He was a role model in every sense, yet still more than that. Aged 18 years older than Harry "he was like a second dad," says the Leicester City defender.

Four years after Harry Souttar returned from injury to star at a World Cup, all the signs point to the towering defender repeating his heroics.

The Socceroos' man mountain famously returned from an ACL tear to deliver a 2022 campaign that earned him a move to the Premier League.

In his first two Socceroos performances since returning from a torn Achilles, Souttar has shown form that will give Tony Popovic great confidence ahead of the June 13 (June 14 AEST) World Cup opener against Turkey.

EFL star called up to World Cup squad despite playing just two games since 2024

The towering Leicester City centre-back sustained the horrific injury in December 2024 while on loan at Sheffield United.

He did not play a single minute of senior football in 2025 and only made his return to action in the Foxes' 1-1 draw against Millwall on April 24, where he scored a late header.

Souttar retained his place in Leicester's starting line-up for their season-ending fixture against Blackburn Rovers, which they won 1-0.

Following the end of the 2025/26 season, Souttar linked up with the Socceroos for their pre-World Cup camp in Florida in a bid to prove his fitness to coach Tony Popovic.

Souttar then played the full 90 minutes for Australia in a friendly against Mexico on May 31, which ended in a 1-0 loss at the Rose Bowl.
