‘Wouldn’t have been my choice’: Farage praises Hanson, but breaks with her on right-wing podcast

London: One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has been backed by British right-wing populist Nigel Farage after they met at a closed-door political gathering also attended by mining billionaire Gina Rinehart.

Farage, who is leading the polls with his Reform UK party, heaped praise on Hanson for her staying power in politics, but he took issue with her decision to sit down for a podcast with far-right activist Tommy Robinson.

Hanson and Rinehart arrived in London to attend the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), where the One Nation leader was given a front-row seat to hear Farage address the summit on Friday afternoon (about 1.30am on Saturday AEST).

Joining Hanson at the Conservative Political Action Conference in London on Friday was Australia’s richest woman Gina Rinehart, after the pair were photographed earlier this week having a poolside meeting at luxury Italian resort as well as attending a Dolce & Gabbana fashion show.

I wouldn't marry him until he paid off his debt, now I'm in charge of our money

When Sarah Reeve got engaged she gave fiance Lee an ultimatum: he had to pay off his debt before she would marry him.

"I was paying my mortgage and bills whereas he was giving his mum some rent," Sarah says of their situations when they met in their early 20s.

"I told him I wouldn't marry him if he had any debts," says the 45-year-old.

So they set a wedding date for two years ahead which gave Lee the time to pay off the £2,000 bank loan – £4,000 in today's money – he had taken out to buy a car.

Once Lee's debt was cleared, the couple paid everything into a joint account and Sarah took charge of bills, saving and budgeting.

The family behind property group Bathla plan to build a sprawling luxury compound in western Sydney despite the company teetering on the edge of administration after racking up debts of more than $3 billion.

Bathla builds budget-friendly housing estates, townhouses and apartments in Sydney suburbs such as Schofields, Marsden Park and Tallawong but over the past couple of years has become overextended, both in terms of the sheer number of projects it is involved in and its liabilities.
