Charli xcx Joins Martin Scorsese's 'What Happens at Night'

Charli xcx and Martin Scorsese‘s collaboration is extending beyond the cover for her new album “Music, Fashion, Film.”

Sources tell Variety that the pop star has a cameo in the Oscar-winning director’s upcoming movie “What Happens at Night” alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. Described as a Gothic psychological drama, the Apple and StudioCanal production follows an American married couple who travel to a small European town to adopt a baby — but as they struggle to claim their child, the less they seem to know about themselves.

Charli’s part in the film is being kept under wraps. She joins a cast that also includes Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson and Jared Harris.

Charli XCX Will Appear in a Martin Scorsese Film

When Charli XCX revealed the cover for Music, Fashion, Film, it boasted three heavyweights from each discipline: John Cale, Marc Jacobs, and Martin Scorsese. Now, the pop star and the director have reunited for Scorsese’s next movie, What Happens at Night. Variety reports that the psychological thriller, which stars Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio as a married couple who travel to a European small town to adopt a baby, will feature a cameo from Charli. The project, a co-production between Apple and StudioCanal, does not yet have a release date.

Despite asking on the MFF track “Camera” if it’s “fuckin’ stupid if I try to be a girl on the screen when I'm turning 34,” Charli has been having a major acting moment. She appeared in multiple movies last year, including Gregg Araki’s I Want Your Sex, Pete Ohs’ Erupja, and Aidan Zamiri’s mockumentary about Charli’s BRAT era, The Moment. She also wrote the soundtrack for Emerald Fennell‘s 2026 film Wuthering Heights (which featured her first collaboration with Cale, “House”) and co-wrote music for A24’s Mother Mary.

Spoof documentaries once skewered subjects by dialling comic ingenuity up to 11, but the genre has stagnated – replaced by showbiz puff pieces and right-wing provocations. Has their time passed?

In the satirical mockumentary The Moment, Charli xcx fears (and eventually embraces) the death of Brat summer, the cultural sensation that made her sixth album a phenomenon. But the film – which stars the singer as a fictionalised version of herself – strains to land jokes out of Charli’s identity crisis and lacks the giddily intoxicating rush of that 2024 album. Watching The Moment shortly after its lukewarm reception at Sundance, I sensed something dying, but it wasn’t Brat – it was the mockumentary style itself.

From Mother Mary to The Moment – The Evolution of the Popstar Thriller

In Charli xcx’s recent mockumentary The Moment, which satirises the past zeitgeist of Brat Summer, there is one particular standout moment of dark humour. As Charli prepares for her tour, she hosts a fan meet and greet. It is awkward in the way you might anticipate. Fans bring gifts and monologue about how Charli saved their lives. It makes for an uncomfortable watch and crucially, breaks the fourth wall, to remind the audience how unnatural being a popstar in 2026 really is. This theme looks set to carry through into XCX’s next project, albeit with significantly darker undertones. In a Vogue interview last year, Hathaway described the role as “the most challenging” of her career due to the film’s intensity. Although The Moment is a semi-autobiographical take on XCX’s own experiences of fame, her next Hollywood project Mother Mary, which she and Jack Antonoff have produced the soundtrack for, is a bigger budget take on similar themes.

    Film Review: The Moment

Film & TV Writer Erin Churchman reviews Charli xcx’s mockumentary The Moment, calling it a must-watch for fans

With the release of The Moment, Charli xcx (Charlotte Aitchison) finally says goodbye to Brat. In this mockumentary-style satire, Aitchison and Aidan Zamiri, The Moment’s director, transport us back to 2024 as they present a fictionalised version of the lead up to Charli’s debut arena tour. The film hinges on presenting the industry pressures that Charli felt to capitalise on what she is repeatedly told will be the peak of the career, as well as her personal conflict in letting go of the Brat era.
