Balogun nets late penalty as Monaco come from behind to beat Ligue 1 rivals Lyon

AS Monaco came from a goal down to beat Lyon 2-1 away from home, recording a sixth consecutive Ligue 1 win for the first time since 2022, while the hosts six-match unbeaten league run came to a sorry end.

Monaco had scored a minimum of two goals in each of their last seven away matches, and their first chance to try and extend that run came 15 minutes in when Maghnes Akliouche ran onto an incisive through pass but had his effort smothered by Dominik Greif.

That sparked a response from Lyon, as Endrick tried his luck from range, forcing Lukas Hradecky to parry. The goalkeeper was then left rooted as Pavel Sulc’s header flew a whisker wide, before the Finn got down well to stop Orel Mangala’s curling effort.

Lyon – Monaco: Merah back in as official lineups confirm strong attacks

lyon – monaco: Khalis Merah is named in the Olympique Lyonnais starting XI for the home match against AS Monaco, kickoff 3: 00 PM ET Sunday. Paulo Fonseca preferred the 19-year-old to Roman Iaremtchouk, slotting Merah alongside Endrick, Pavel Sulc and Afonso Moreira in the offensive unit. Sébastien Pocognoli kept to the expected Monaco eleven, with the attacking trio Akliouche, Balogun and Golovine leading the visitors while Eric Dier and Krépin Diatta begin on the bench.

For the lyon – monaco fixture Paulo Fonseca set a 4-2-3-1 for Olympique Lyonnais with Greif in goal, Hateboer and Tagliafico at fullback and Niakhaté paired with Mata in central defense. Merah starts in midfield alongside Mangala, with Tolisso ahead of them and Sulc occupying the lone striker role flanked by Endrick and Moreira. Sébastien Pocognoli opted for a 3-4-3 for AS Monaco: Hradecky lining up behind a back three of Faes, Zakaria and Kehrer, Teze and Adingra as wide engines, Bamba and Camara in midfield and the front three completed by Akliouche, Balogun and Golovine. The official sheets also place Eric Dier and Krépin Diatta among Monaco’s substitutes.
