NWS confirms 3 tornadoes hit Winnebago County

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – The National Weather Service out of Chicago reports its survey crew confirmed three tornadoes touched down in Winnebago County on April 17.

The NWS says it will have more information on peak wind speeds, as well as path lengths and widths soon.

The NWS out of the Quad Cities also shared preliminary findings that a tornado that caused widespread damage in Lena was a “strong EF-2.”

Video captured a frightening look at what it was like as a violent storm tore through an Illinois town outside of Rockford.

Dramatic footage from a live stream camera in the town of Lena, Illinois, showed a severe storm inching into the town just over 40 miles west of Rockford. Intense winds are seen whipping the region as debris from buildings flies around.

Shortly after the storm, the Stephenson County Sheriff's Office urged people to avoid the town of Lena entirely.

"There is no way to get into town due to trees and wires down. Emergency Services are assisting people per Sheriff Stovall," the sheriff's office wrote in an alert on social media.

Five tornadoes touched down across Illinois during Friday's storms

The National Weather Service confirming five tornados swept through Illinois last night as the threat of flooding continues in the Chicago area.

ILLINOIS – Five tornadoes were confirmed in Illinois during Friday's storms by the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service confirmed three tornadoes touched down in Winnebago County, including in Pecatonica, Ill., Harrison, Ill., and Roscoe, Ill.

They also confirmed two other tornadoes in Gibson City and Buckley.

Severe storms barreled through the Chicago area Friday evening, bringing damaging winds, large hail, tornadoes and localized flooding.

As of around 7 a.m. on Saturday, more than 8,300 ComEd customers in Northern Illinois and 8,600 NIPSCO customers in Northern Indiana were affected by power outages.
