Sydney airport rail line hit with major go-slow as dispute blows up
Work on the Metro line to the Western Sydney Airport has been slashed in a dramatic escalation of a dispute between the major contractor and the NSW government over billions of dollars in extra costs, which threatens to delay the project’s opening.
Since Friday, Italian infrastructure giant Webuild halted all night and weekend work at the $11 billion project, cutting days back to eight hours and restricting labour to critical works, three sources on the project told The Australian Financial Review on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation. The cuts have resulted in tradies on the project sitting idle and subcontractors laying off workers.
