Exclusive Akermanis column: Sack Michael Voss now! Oh wait!!

Nearly every board member, club sponsor and coterie group member I have ever meet or seen at work within a club has next to no idea about football coaching.

When it comes to the uniquely different position of an AFL club coach, they know even less.

The senior coach is the central point of an entire organisation. He deals daily with everyone above and below him — assistants, players, medical and sports science staff multiple times a day. Add in football bosses, the CEO, COO, sponsors, parents, auxiliary staff, fans and the media almost every other day.

There is no job quite like it. It is mentally extraordinarily demanding.

‘Terminal’ Voss reality amid Blues’ ‘death spiral’ as AFL great backs in-house replacement

Melbourne great Garry Lyon has proposed a bold option at the Carlton Football Club for the remainder of 2026, should head coach Michael Voss’ tenure be cut short before the end of the season.

External pressure on Voss, whose Blues are currently sitting 1-7 and just percentage away from the bottom of the ladder, has reached a new apex at the conclusion of Round 8 after conceding yet another half time lead in their 39-point loss to St Kilda last Saturday.

Nine things we learned: This Crow is firmly in the All-Australian conversation

There's an upside to Richmond's injury issues, Collingwood has a clearance problem plus more lessons from round eight

IN THIS week's Things We Learned, we discover a Crow is firmly in the All-Australian race, the Bont might need a break plus much, much more.

Check out what we learned from round eight of the 2026 season.

Kate McCarthy and Xander McGuire bring you The Round So Far for round eight

For both fans and players, Carlton's ongoing trend of second-half fade outs is creating long-term damage to an already struggling program. With the predictable, and dramatic, momentum swings away from the Blues becoming essentially a footy meme, if change isn't established quick smart, some of the young talent that has been brought into the club to help turn the tide is going to be scarred before they can show their true value. Whether that change is the head coach, the off-field staff, veteran players, or a combination of all three remains to be seen, but the bleeding simply must be stemmed for the future of the club. – Gemma Bastiani
