On Mount Athos, in northern Greece, a monk rises before dawn to sing the same office that has been sung on that mountain for more than 1,000 years. He learned it from older monks who came before him, who learned it in turn in an unbroken chain stretching back to Athanasios the Athonite, in AD963.
Over the centuries, individual monks have come and gone, and yet their chants, prayers, oaths, costumes and ceremonies endure. This persistence is remarkable and revealing: cultural traditions endure because they share a fundamental property with biological organisms. They are alive. Not metaphorically, but literally.

Beaumont Lamarre-Condon: Trial of ex-cop accused of double murder to begin in Sydney
The double murder trial of Beaumont Lamarre-Condon, a former police officer accused of killing his ex-partner and his new boyfriend in 2024, is to begin in Sydney on Monday.
Lamarre-Condon, 31, has pleaded not guilty to two charges of domestic violence-related murder and one of aggravated break and enter.
Police allege Lamarre-Condon used his work-issued gun to shoot his ex-partner Jesse Baird, 26, a television presenter, and Baird's new partner Luke Davies, 29, a Qantas flight attendant, at a home in the inner Sydney suburb of Paddington.
The couple's bodies were found in a rural area more than 200km southwest of Sydney, hidden in surfboard bags. The trial is expected to run for three months.
