Live: ASX to rise, AI rally pushes Nasdaq to record high, oil falls below $US100

The Australian share market is likely to start the day higher after Wall Street's AI stocks surged, pushing the tech-heavy Nasdaq index to a new record high.

Oil prices fell to their lowest level since early September on investors' renewed hopes for a diplomatic breakthrough to end the US-Iran war.

The forecast for Australia in 2066 also points to slower growth, mounting pressure from an aging population, and growing intergenerational pressures, particularly around housing and wealth.

Australian shares are set to open higher, bolstered by gains on Wall Street, a sharp drop in the oil price, and easing global bond yields. Bitcoin briefly topped $US87,000 late in New York.

ASX 200 futures were up 29 points or 0.3 per cent to 8809. At the close in New York, the S&P 500 was 1.5 per cent higher. Communication services leapt 3.9 per cent, while information technology advanced 2.5 per cent. Energy stocks slumped 2.6 per cent while oil briefly traded below $US100 a barrel.

The S&P 500 is now within 0.4 per cent of the record it set last month. The Nasdaq Composite reset its closing high at 27,122.09.

Nasdaq jumps 2% to close at a record, buoyed by surge in AI stocks, as well as cooling oil and yields

U.S. stocks rose on Monday as key technology names advanced and oil prices and Treasury yields slipped, with Wall Street looking to recover from a mostly lower week.

The S&P 500 climbed 1.49% to end at 7,764.70, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 2.26% for a record close of 27,122.09 — its first since June. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 366.19 points, or 0.71%, to settle at 52,048.83.

The broader market was supported by a rise in artificial intelligence-related stocks. Shares of Intel popped 12%, while Advanced Micro Devices added about 10% and hit $1 trillion in market cap. Others such as Qualcomm increased more than 9% as well.

Last week, the Dow slid 1.7% for its worst performance since March. The S&P 500 was off about 0.1%. Only the tech-heavy Nasdaq posted a gain, up 0.7%.
