How Maycee Barber's mean streak has fueled her successful, obstacle-filled journey to top of UFC

If there's a super power within the skill set of Maycee Barber that has helped her sustain a seven-fight win streak — despite multiple layoffs and health scares outside the cage — it might be the ferociousness with which she competes.

You can call it passion, drive or what it appears to be: a mean streak. And it has been on display since the moment the Greely, Colorado, native burst onto the UFC scene in 2018 during Season 2 of "The Dana White Contender Series" as a 20-year-old prospect.

"I guess you could call it a super power, but I just feel like I have a thing and it's something I possess," Barber told CBS Sports HQ on Tuesday. "Not a lot of other girls possess it. I love that about myself, and I definitely lean into it. I just know that there is not a single girl who can go into the Octagon with me and have nearly that amount of aggression and dominance that I have."

Maycee Barber plans to request Mark Smith ‘is not the ref’ in UFC Seattle rematch with Alexa Grasso

Maycee Barber is not over Mark Smith’s performance at UFC 323

Maycee Barber is going to do eveything in her power to make sure Mark Smith is not the referee in the biggest fight of her career this Saturday.

Barber looks to avenge the last loss of her career when she faces Alexa Grasso in a rematch at UFC Seattle this Saturday. The flyweight bout serves as the co-main event. Since the UFC 258 decision loss to Grasso in February 2021, Barber has won all seven of her octagon bouts.

It was the most recent fight that left Barber scratching her head. After missing nearly two years due to a health scare, Barber returned at UFC 323 this past December and picked up a win over Karine Silva. During the fight, Barber got blasted with an illegal upkick on the ground. Referee Mark Smith called it a “glancing blow” and ordered Barber to make a decision if she wanted to keep fighting, which led her to tell MMA Fighting in a past interview that she “doesn’t feel safe in there” with Smith as the referee.
