I wish Hill and Stengle well, but the game must learn lessons from their exits
The news that Collingwood and Geelong had reached agreements with Bobby Hill and Ty Stengle to depart the club was hardly a surprise.
But that didn’t make hearing it any less disappointing as both were extremely talented players who starred on the biggest stages for their clubs.
Premierships, All-Australian selection and a Norm Smith medal bear testament to the ability they possessed.
More importantly they are also people who I care about having enjoyed the interactions I have had with them over the years. Like their teammates and coaches and fans, I only want the best for them in the next chapter of their lives.
Magpies star released from $3m deal to focus on ‘personal matters’
AFL star Bobby Hill plans to take a break from the game after being granted a release by Collingwood.
The club on Friday confirmed it had agreed to release the 2023 Norm Smith Medallist from the remainder of his contract, which ran until the end of 2030 and was reportedly worth $750,000 per season.

Hill, 26, will become a delisted free agent and can be picked up by another club from next season.
But he says he plans to step away from football to focus on issues in his personal life.
“I’ll always be proud to have been part of this club and thankful for the opportunity to represent Collingwood – I leave with memories I’ll cherish forever,” Hill said in a club statement.

'We’ll always love him': Pies confirm Hill departure
COLLINGWOOD'S Bobby Hill has exited the club amid support from coach Craig McRae after the premiership hero was allegedly racially abused on social media.
As revealed by AFL.com.au earlier this week, the Magpies have formally split with Hill, cutting short the 26-year-old's bumper contract that had been due to expire at end of 2030.
"I'm going to take a break from football to keep working on myself and regain my passion for the game," Hill said in a statement released by the Magpies on Friday.
Hill was the star of Collingwood's 2023 premiership under coach Craig McRae, winning the Norm Smith medal for a four-goal Grand Final showing against Brisbane.
