Fernando Diniz needs first Copa do Brasil comeback to take Corinthians into quarter-finals

Corinthians host Internacional on Thursday at 20:00 in the Copa do Brasil last-16 second leg, trailing 2-0 from Beira-Rio. For a quarter-final place, Fernando Diniz must engineer the first comeback of his managerial career in this competition.

According to Meu Timao, before this tie his sides had trailed after the first leg on four occasions in the Copa do Brasil and he has not overturned the deficit in any of them.

The first instance came with Votoraty in 2010, a 1-0 first-leg loss to Grêmio in the second round followed by a 3-0 defeat in the return.

In 2018 at Athletico Paranaense, after a 2-1 home defeat to Cruzeiro in the last 16, Diniz was dismissed before the second leg.

Corinthians seek Copa do Brasil comeback against Internacional without Yuri Alberto

Corinthians host Internacional on Thursday, aiming to overturn a 2-0 first-leg defeat at Beira-Rio and reach the Copa do Brasil quarter-finals. They must score at least two. According to Meu Timao, they will be without forward Yuri Alberto.

The striker sustained a muscle injury in the back of his right thigh late last month. He is Corinthians’ leading scorer against Internacional with six goals in six appearances.

Half of that haul came in their last win over Internacional, a 4-2 victory in the 2025 Brasileirão, when Yuri Alberto hit a hat-trick and Coronado added the other. Jorge Henrique has four in six, while Luizão, Cristóvão, Guerrero, Tales, Neto, Jô and Rivellino have three each.

Corinthians need rare margin not seen in 39 years to progress in Copa do Brasil

On Sunday, Corinthians lost 2-0 to Internacional in the Copa do Brasil last 16 first leg. To qualify outright they must win the return by more than two goals, something they have not managed for 39 years.

The last such win came in 1987 at the Torneio Quadrangular de Campo Grande, a friendly featuring Corinthians, Internacional, Palmeiras and Operário of Mato Grosso do Sul. Corinthians won 4-1, with Édson Abobrão, Biro-Biro and Cristóvão Borges, twice, on target. Despite that, they finished runners-up, one win behind Internacional, and Borges would later manage the club in 2016.

Across 81 years of this fixture, it has been rare. In 102 meetings, Corinthians have won by more than two goals only three times. One was their first encounter in 1945 at Pacaembu, a 4-1 friendly sealed by Servílio, twice, Nino and Pipi.
