Bills at Texans snap counts: Tight ends take over, defense logs whopping 79 snaps
Buffalo leaned heavily on multiple tight end packages while several defensive starters rarely left the field
The Buffalo Bills opened the 2026 season with a thrilling 36-31 win over the Houston Texans, but the final score only tells part of the story. Buffalo’s offense produced 36 points and 409 total yards on just 58 snaps. The defense, meanwhile, was forced to play 79 snaps as Houston sustained drives and repeatedly tested Buffalo’s secondary.
The Week 1 snap counts give us our first meaningful look at how head coach Joe Brady and his staff plan to divide Buffalo’s roles this season. They also reveal several immediate storylines, including an offense built around multiple tight ends, a surprisingly straightforward running-back rotation and a defensive front that relied heavily on its top four players.

Buffalo Bills Star Called ‘Special Sauce’ for Offense After Career Game
The Buffalo Bills looked like geniuses after trading for Chicago Bears wide receiver D.J. Moore this offseason because he went off for 5 receptions for 100 yards and 1 touchdown in a 36-31 win over the Houston Texans in Week 1.
Even with Moore’s incredible outing, he wasn’t the breakout star for the Bills against the Texans — that was tight end Dalton Kincaid with 5 receptions for 130 yards.
“Per ESPN Research: Dalton Kincaid had 130 receiving yards against the Texans, the most for a Bills tight end since 1967,” ESPN’s Ben Solak wrote on his official X account.
Kincaid’s career game — and the best game for a Bills tight end since 1967 — led Solak to call to call the former 1st-round pick the “Special Sauce” for the offense.
