Battle of the axed: Childbirth and a hamstring injury force changes for Warriors, Panthers

The New Zealand Warriors and Penrith Panthers have both been forced into late changes for Friday night's enormous top-four clash in Auckland.

The Warriors have lost Te Maire Martin to a hamstring injury sustained at training this week, while Penrith will be without Jack Cogger who has remained in Australia as he prepares for the birth of his child.

Cogger will almost certainly only miss a single week before being available for selection again, while Martin could miss a couple of weeks even with a minor hamstring problem.

It's unclear how bad Martin's issue is at this stage, but he was spotted at training with ice on his hamstring.

Shock halves changes for Warriors AND Panthers ahead of Auckland blockbuster

He’s been an unused reserve five times and hasn’t seen NRL action since way back in Round 5.

But Luke Metcalf is set for just his third NRL appearance of 2026 when the Warriors host the Panthers on Friday night in Auckland following a late change in the Wahs’ Round 23 squad.

One of Andrew Webster’s most important players just a season ago, Metcalf has tumbled down the Warriors playmaking pecking order after a season-ending ACL injury in 2025 followed by the spectacular rise of back-up No.7 Tanah Boyd.

Even when Boyd suffered an ACL of his own in Round 11 this season, Metcalf was overlooked for 30-year-old Te Maire Martin who has partnered Chanel Harris-Tavita in the halves since Round 12.

Crime rises in Scotland as SNP preside over huge drop in police officer numbers

Police officer numbers in Scotland have fallen to its lowest level in two years despite rising levels of crime as well as increasing numbers of protests taking place across the country. And underfunding from the Scottish Government has been blamed for the lack of cops on the beat.

According to the latest crime figures, the number of sexual crimes recorded by Police Scotland increased by 10% last year and are now at their highest level since 1971. The total number of sexual crimes, which include rape and attempted rape, sexual assault and communicating indecently, rose from 14,892 to 16,430. There was also a 23% increase in offences under the Domestic Abuse (Scotland) Act, which rose from 2,573 to 3,170 in 2025-26.

NRL hooker Brandon Smith has said he is “satisfied” after prosecutors withdrew an insider-betting charge due to lack of evidence.

But the New Zealander continues to battle an allegation that he supplied cocaine to a fellow first-grade player in 2025.

The South Sydney Rabbitohs hooker faced Southport Magistrates Court on Thursday for the update on the two criminal charges against him.

The police prosecutor withdrew the allegation Smith had disclosed inside knowledge of the Souths’ starting line-up for his return from injury on July 2, 2025, telling Magistrate Louisa Pink that he would offer “no evidence” for the charge.

South Sydney Rabbitohs star Brandon Smith has had an insider-betting charge withdrawn.

Smith appeared before Southport Magistrates Court on Thursday over allegations that he had disclosed inside knowledge to an associate detailing the Rabbitohs starting side for their match against the Manly Sea Eagles on July 2, 2025. That associate then allegedly placed a bet on the match.

Geelong allegedly struck an agreement with one of its players, who had a history of concussion, that would see him assume legal responsibility for future on-field head trauma, this masthead has confirmed.

The AFL Players’ Association has condemned the deal, which involved an unnamed player signing an agreement that acknowledged his elevated risk of concussion.

Three industry sources, speaking anonymously because of the sensitivity of the situation, confirmed Geelong was the club involved.

“The game has a duty to provide a workplace that protects the health, safety, and wellbeing of players and all clubs hold this duty as employers,” AFLPA chief executive James Gallagher said.

A News Corp report has suggested an AFL player had signed a contract with his club, exonerating it from future brain trauma issues.

The report says the player signed the contract two years ago due to his higher risk of concussions.

The AFLPA says it is in discussions with the AFL about the contract, as a multi-million-dollar concussion class action case goes to court next year.

The AFL Players Association says it is in discussions with the league after reports a Victorian club signed a deal with a player with a history of concussions that required him to assume all legal responsibility for future brain trauma.
