Bernard Tomic has been beaten by Lloyd Harris at the US Open qualifiers, as his wait to reach the main draw of a grand slam continues.

Tomic was beaten in three sets by Harris while Emerson Jones and Alex Bolt were also beaten.

The main draw of the US Open gets underway from August 30 at Flushing Meadows in New York.

Bernard Tomic's seemingly unending quest to fight his way back into another grand slam main draw has fallen short once again at Flushing Meadows despite one more worthy scrap from the veteran Australian.

ATP US Open Best Bets Including Bernard Tomic Vs Lloyd Harris

The 2026 US Open begins this week with three rounds of qualifying at the Billie Jean King USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York. It’s called “The World’s Toughest Tennis” for a reason. It’s later in the season. Players have powered through a month of hardcourt tennis in often-punishing summer heat and humidity. Players had to deal with a lot of rain delays in Canada and Cincinnati. Now they come to New York, the big city, trying to make an impact at the last Major tournament of the year. The US Open exposes who is not fit enough to be an elite player, and who has staying power well after the clay season and grass season have ended. Who carries form into the end of summer, and who wilts in the late-August heat? It’s Open season, one could say. LWOS has our best bets for three matches. Post your best bets and thoughts in the comments.

Trump threatens to demolish Kennedy Center if $250m renovation not done

US president’s lawyers in court filing say Washington arts complex must undergo repairs or risk demolition

The John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts could be demolished if repairs are not carried out, Donald Trump’s administration warned in a court filing on Monday.

Lawyers for the US president said the national arts complex in Washington DC must undergo a $250m renovation or risk facing the wrecking ball.

“Without those efforts, the Center will deteriorate further into an unsafe, decrepit structure that will be required to be taken down, with a determination to follow on what to build on the site, such as a large outdoor amphitheater overlooking the Potomac River that has been proposed, by some, for many years,” they argued.

Taiwan charges nine people for smuggling ‘high-end’ AI servers to China

Among those charged are two Super Micro employees and one from Nvidia, marking another flashpoint in US-China AI rivalry

Taiwanese prosecutors charged nine people Monday, including one from Nvidia and two from Super Micro, for illegally exporting “high-end AI servers” to mainland China, adding another wave of turbulence in the AI rivalry between China and the United States.

Prosecutors said the servers involved were graphics processing units known as “B300,” which have been banned from sale to China.

Seventy-four servers arrived in China successfully, according to the prosecutors. Of those, 50 were sent through Indonesia, 16 delivered directly to China and eight sent to Japan first, then Hong Kong, before they landed in mainland China.

Russia’s infrastructure is being pummeled by Ukrainian strikes. Now Putin wants to seize control of it

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree giving the government powers to temporarily take control of “critical infrastructure” across the country, if private owners fail to protect it from escalating Ukrainian attacks.

The new measure comes as Moscow and Kyiv ramp up their air campaigns, with Ukrainian strikes deep into Russian territory sparking fuel shortages and bringing the war closer to home for ordinary Russians.

Kyiv has stepped up attacks in recent days on Ozon logistics hubs in Russia – a competitor to the frequently targeted e-commerce giant Wildberries – as it seeks to undermine Moscow’s war-driven economy. The decree, which came into force on Monday, says the new measures are being introduced “in connection with the growing threats to the security of critical infrastructure facilities of the Russian Federation.”

Russia to seize poorly protected infrastructure amid Ukraine drone attacks

Operators could lose control of facilities if regulators find them too slow to repair damage as Ukraine attacks spur economic and societal difficulties.

President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree opening the way for the Russian state to take temporary control of critical infrastructure found to be inadequately protected from attack.

The decree, published on Monday, would allow Moscow to strip owners of physical and financial control over facilities should it be determined that they are failing to secure them or repair damage quickly. The move comes as Ukraine maintains an intense drone campaign against Russian infrastructure.

Under the decree, ownership powers would transfer to Russia’s Federal Agency for State Property Management or another designated body, which would take responsibility for the site’s safety and could conduct an inventory of its assets.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has decreed that the state can temporarily seize control of critical infrastructure facilities if private owners fail to protect them from Ukrainian drone attacks or rebuild them after the strikes.

Still No Place to Hide: Our new review finds shortcomings in global catastrophe resilience

The global catastrophic risk field has grown fast over the last decade. This research has been good at analysing hazards, how much soot a nuclear war injects into the stratosphere, what a Carrington-class solar storm does to electrical transformers, how a large magnitude volcanic eruption perturbs the monsoon. Research is far weaker on the question a policymaker in Wellington, Reykjavík or Montevideo actually asks:

Given all this hazard, how exposed are we, and what can we do about it?

That is the gap our review set out to fill. We ran a systematic OpenAlex scan that returned 3,200 candidate papers, screened down to 551, then to 147 read in full. We closed the remaining gaps by bringing in subject-matter expertise on societal collapse, volcanism, cyberattack and food systems, which added a further 77 expert-identified papers, for a final included corpus of 152.

No Place on Earth Is Safe if All Hell Breaks Loose, But One Place Is Safer Than The Rest

Sometimes it seems like there's no end to the catastrophic dangers we face as a species.

Nuclear armageddon. Climate change. Pandemics. AI. Supervolcanoes. The list is a long one.

But if all hell really does break loose and some kind of unprecedented global disaster strikes, where would you go?

What would be the safest place to seek shelter, to lay low and ride out the storm, and hopefully survive to see a brighter day?

In the first study of its kind, published in Global Challenges, scientists have identified what appears to be the overall safest place in the world in the event of an unmitigated calamity.

Hewitt survives early fright to book battle with Wimbledon semi-finalist

A second-set comeback paved the way for Cruz Hewitt to claim his second-ever ATP main draw win and book his spot in the round of 32 at the Winston-Salem Open.

Hewitt struggled in the first set, but turned things around in a tight second before claiming victory 1-6, 7-6(4), 6-4 over America’s Sebastian Gorzny in North Carolina on Tuesday.

Gorzny, who holds a lowly career-high ranking of world No.782, needed just 27 minutes to dismiss his 17-year-old rival in the first set.

But the 22-year-old could not replicate his dominance in the second as Hewitt showed the grit his father Lleyton was famous for to force a tiebreak, which he won 7-4.

WNBA games today: Schedule, times, how to watch for Aug. 23

The WNBA is back with a new collective bargaining agreement and million dollar players.

The Las Vegas Aces will be looking to run it back as defending champs with the reigning MVP, A'ja Wilson, leading the way. Lots of other contenders hope to have something to say about that including the Atlanta Dream, New York Liberty and Indiana Fever. The Fever, who were without floor leader Caitlin Clark for much of last season, are fully healthy. The Liberty, who were also bitten by the injury bug last season, already have Sabrina Ionesco on the sidelines after she rolled her ankle in a preseason game against the Connecticut Sun.

WNBA Picks & Predictions: Monday (8/24)

There are only two WNBA games tonight, as the Valkyries battle the Lynx and the Dream face the Sparks. Both contests feature rematches from last week. Below, I explain why I expect the Valkyries to keep things close this time around against the Lynx. Then, I highlight why the Sparks are in for another tough performance against the Dream. Here are the best WNBA picks for Monday, August 24th.

The Valkyries and Lynx played just five days ago, and the Lynx had no trouble taking care of business. They held the Valkyries to just 32% shooting from the floor, on their way to a 77-66 road victory. The Lynx are now 3-0 against the Valkyries, with two of those victories coming by at least six points.

BHP’s latest results offer a glimpse of what’s ahead

BHP’s (ASX.BHP) latest earnings update had all the hallmarks of a strong result. Underlying net profit rose 30% and dividends jumped 65%. On the surface, it looks like a textbook example of a company firing on all cylinders. However, a closer look at what drove the result raises important questions about BHP’s valuation and the sustainability of its earnings.

Those questions centre on whether BHP’s current valuation can be justified by earnings generated during a period of unusually strong commodity prices. As the largest company on the ASX, its share price performance has direct consequences for most Australians, given BHP’s influence on super and index ETF returns.
