    First drone footage of a humpback birth shows mum and bub thriving

    The gender is not clear, but we do know the baby was born about 1pm somewhere off the coast of northern NSW, weighing a healthy 1.5 tonnes or so.

    In what is thought to be a world first, a wildlife photographer has captured the birth of a humpback whale using a drone.

    Alexander Forrest, a drone operator who works with ORRCA – the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia – was watching the whale migration from above on Monday when he noticed a plume of blood rise in the water next to a whale that was alone there.

    Moments later the calf appeared, and was soon hoisted to the ocean’s surface to aid it as it takes its first breaths.

    Teenage Australian tennis player Cruz Hewitt has jumped more than 250 spots in the ATP world rankings after his first Tour win at the DC Open.

    After warming up with father Lleyton, the 17-year-old Hewitt defeated former world number 37 Marcus Giron in straight sets.

    Hewitt will next play either Alex de Minaur or Stefanos Tsitsipas in the round of 16.

    Cruz Hewitt's victory in his ATP Tour main-draw debut is set to rocket the son of a gun up the world rankings.

    His maiden win came at the Washington Open – a competition his father won in 2004.

    It was one of his father's 30 career titles, including the 2002 Wimbledon men's singles crown.

    "It's a pretty special moment," Hewitt said. "Seeing my dad play this tournament and to get my first tour win, it feels really cool."

    ‘Thrilled’ Hewitt stuns with first senior tour victory

    Cruz Hewitt’s blossoming professional tennis career has hit another milestone, having clinched a maiden victory on the ATP Tour in his first match.

    Making his tour-level debut against American Marcos Giron at the Washington Open on Wednesday morning (AEST), Hewitt didn’t let the occasion get the better of him to clinch the biggest victory of his career in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

    Millions of Australians use offset accounts to reduce interest costs on their mortgage, but the corporate regulator says some banks are not delivering the savings as promised.

    ASIC found Australian banks paid more than $55 million in compensation to customers in just two years, for failures with mortgage offset accounts.

    The regulator said several banks had begun remediation and it would monitor their fixes, provide individual feedback and consider further regulatory action.

    Millions of Australians use mortgage offset accounts to reduce interest costs on their home loans, but the corporate regulator says some banks are not delivering the savings as promised.

    It was eight years ago, during a bruising royal commission, that Australia’s banking industry sustained injury to its image so damaging that it lost the community’s trust.

    Now, after several years of rehabilitation efforts by the banks, behavioural creep is emerging again. The systemic nature of this issue was uncovered by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.

    The backlash from the royal commission’s revelations of banks’ bad behaviour wiped out a legion of the industry’s board directors and executives on the back of a community shaming exercise.

    The government says the scheme, introduced in April to help motorists experiencing price shock due to the war in the Iran, was never meant to be permanent.

    Treasury has warned the world's oil supply has "weaker buffers" to deal with another oil shock.

    Drivers will lose their fuel discount from Monday after the government officially confirmed the fuel excise relief will end as planned, despite escalating pressure on global oil prices due to the war in Iran.

    The original 50 per cent discount, which knocked 32 cents off each litre of petrol, was dropped back to 16 cents from July and is scheduled to end on August 2.

    Petrol is back above $2 a litre and diesel prices have hit $2.40 in some cities as fuel costs race upwards.

    Oil prices have steadily risen since the US resumed strikes on Iran, with Brent crude up from about US$70 on 2 July to US$87 today, while the Australian government reduced its fuel excise discount by 16 cents a litre.

    Service stations have passed the higher wholesale fuel prices on to customers.

    Melbourne is facing diesel prices of $2.40 a litre today, up 66 cents from their June low of 173.9c/L, according to Motormouth. Canberra is at 238c/L, Brisbane is at 234.4, Adelaide at 233.7, Sydney 232.8, and 226.4 in Perth.

    Fuel prices to rise when excise cut ends within days

    Aussie motorists will soon pay more for petrol and diesel, with the federal government confirming its fuel excise discount will end this weekend.

    Australian motorists will pay more for fuel following confirmation by treasurer Jim Chalmers that the federal government's current fuel excise discount will end at midnight this Sunday (August 2, 2026).

    In response to record petrol and diesel prices following the outbreak of conflict in the Middle East in late February, the Australian Government halved the 52.6 cents-per-litre fuel excise in April, to ease cost-of-living pressures for three months until June 30.

    The total saving reached 32 cents per litre after the states and territories agreed to contribute an additional 5.7cpl, funded by extra Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue generated by higher fuel prices.
