    School strike to go ahead as teachers reject pay offer

    Victorian public school staff have voted to reject the state government’s latest pay offer, paving the way for statewide strikes to go ahead on Thursday.

    Teachers, principals and education support staff voted against a pay offer of 28.3 per cent over four years, during an online ballot of union members that began last week and ended at 1pm on Tuesday.

    Public school staff will stage a mass walkout on Thursday in an attempt to force the state government back to the negotiating table.

    The result of the Australian Education Union members’ vote was 48.82 per cent to 51.18 per cent in favour of rejecting the offer. More than 50,677 union members voted, representing 90.2 per cent of those eligible.

    Public school teachers will walk off the job for the second time in months after rejecting a revised pay offer.

    Victorian members of the Australian Education Union voted to turn down the state government's updated offer of a 28.3 per cent pay rise over the next four years.

    The union on Tuesday revealed almost 49 per cent of members voted to accept the deal and more than 51 per cent of members rejected it.

    “I wanted to share some tough news today …” Tom captioned a series of photos of her daughter Ellie, 25, on Instagram on Sunday, July 19.

    “This is my beautiful daughter, Ellie. She is currently battling osteosarcoma, (bone cancer) and my family and I are doing everything we can to aid in her healing.”

    Lauren Tom is asking fans to keep her family in their thoughts after revealing that her 25-year-old daughter, Ellie, has been diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.

    The Friends actress shared the news Sunday in an emotional Instagram post alongside a carousel of photos of Ellie, writing that her family is doing "everything we can to aid in her healing."

    "I wanted to share some tough news today," Tom wrote. "This is my beautiful daughter, Ellie. She is currently battling osteosarcoma (bone cancer)."

    Tom said she has been reminded of one of Fred Rogers' most famous pieces of advice: "Look for the helpers."

    Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has signed a new five-year contract at Anfield.

    Dubai/Riyadh: Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis said they would impose a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia, opening a potential new front against the US in its war with Iran and raising the threat to global energy supplies and trade beyond the Gulf.

    The Houthis made their announcement despite signs that Tehran and Washington want to resume diplomacy to halt a worsening cycle of attacks that has all but wrecked a fragile interim agreement signed last month.

    Emily, Harriet, Alexa, and Catherine are healthy but are being cared for in a neonatal intensive care unit.

    Rare identical quadruplets born in Australia

    An Australian woman has given birth to rare, naturally-conceived identical quadruplets after a pregnancy described as "extremely high risk" by the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital.

    The four girls, who were delivered via caesarean section at 28 weeks and four days on 14 July, were monozygotic quadruplets – where a single fertilised egg splits into four embryos.

    The hospital said the girls' mother, 34-year-old Jenitar Na'amoana, and her husband Jortham, already had four children and were taken by "immense surprise" when told to expect quadruplets.

    Dr Alexa Bendall, who cared for the mother from the start of her pregnancy, estimated identical quadruplets occur "at one in every 15 million pregnancies" and said "but to share the same placenta – this is unheard of".

    Initial asking prices are falling and homes are sitting for longer as the housing market cools across Australia.

    During a period of global economic instability, domestic tax reform and sustained higher interest rates, buyers and sellers in the Australian property market have been adjusting their approach to transactions.

    "These cumulative effects over the last six or so months have dragged demand lower significantly," said Cotality's head of research, Gerard Burg.

    To get a sense of how this uncertainty is playing out in the market, here is what four sets of data tell us.

    Slump in auction clearance rates worse than during pandemic

    The auction clearance rate has once again dropped below 50 per cent nationally, marking nine weeks of consistently low figures not seen in Australia’s property market since the last major downturn in 2018 caused by tighter lending restrictions.

    This week’s preliminary clearance rate came in at 50 per cent, although it will likely be revised down to about 48 per cent. The result is slightly weaker than last week, when the preliminary rate came in at 54.8 per cent before being revised down to 48.5 per cent, according to data house Cotality.

    A teenage boy has been charged with setting fire to Cowra High School

    About 7.10pm on Monday, July 20, emergency services responded to reports of a fire at a school in Dowell Street.

    Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the fire which was contained to an administration block at the school causing extensive damage. Smoke damage was also sustained to other buildings within the school grounds.

    Officers from the Chifley Police District established a crime scene and commenced an investigation.
