This comes against the backdrop of the Republican president's hatred of wind turbines and desire to boost fossil fuels for "energy dominance" in the global market. National lab estimates show that turbines installed along the U.S. coasts could provide more than enough power to cover the nation's annual electricity consumption.

California threatens lawsuit over federal offshore wind lease buyouts

NORTHSTATE, Calif. — California Attorney General Rob Bonta and the California Energy Commission are threatening legal action against the U.S. Department of the Interior over what they call an unlawful effort to halt offshore wind energy development off the state's coast.

On Thursday, July 16, Bonta and California Energy Commission Chair David Hochschild sent a Notice of Intent to Sue the Department of the Interior and energy developer Invenergy. The notice challenges a June agreement in which the federal government agreed to pay an Invenergy subsidiary more than $111 million to give up its offshore wind lease in the Morro Bay Wind Energy Area.

A baby humpback whale will be tested for H5N1 bird flu after it washed up and died on a beach in Sydney’s south.

The 4.5-metre male calf was found at Greenhills Beach in Cronulla at 6.30am on Friday.

A member of the public alerted the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (ORRCA).

The rescue group were called to assess the animal alongside the NSW National Parks and Wildlife, Gamay Rangers and Sutherland Shire Council.

The responding agencies tried to save the whale but he died shortly after they arrived.

Tiger shark caught on SMART drumline near stranded whale calf at Greenhills

A 2.55 metre tiger shark was tagged and released from a SMART drumline at Wanda two hours after a four-metre humpback whale calf was found stranded on nearby Greenhills beach.

The Department of Primary Industries reported the shark was attended to at 8.34am on Friday July 17.

About 6.30am a member of the public reported the stranded whale by calling the Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (ORRCA) hotline.

The carcass has been removed and will be tested for H5N1 bird flu.

A week ago, three sharks were tagged and released on Thursday and Friday July 9-10 after being caught on SMART drumlines at Wanda.

Researchers have found the first atmosphere surrounding an Earth-like, rocky planet orbiting within the habitable zone of a distant star.

The researchers say that their discovery provides the strongest evidence yet that worlds with conditions similar to Earth could exist beyond our solar system.

The gas detected in the atmosphere is helium, which would not be able to support life, but other gasses may also be present.

The lead author, Dr Collin Cherubim of Harvard University, described the discovery as "a big deal".

"This is the first time anyone has found an atmosphere on a rocky planet in the habitable zone of another star."

The search for life outside our solar system has taken another twist as researchers revealed they have discovered an atmosphere around an Earth-like planet 49 light years away that could have liquid water on its surface.

There have also been signs of such envelopes around rocky exoplanets that sit outside their star’s habitable zone – a region in which liquid water could exist on the planet’s surface, and hence potentially support life.

Luckily, the 2026 Commonwealth Games get underway in Glasgow from Thursday, July 23 where 74 nations and territories will compete for a spot on the podium.

Scotland salvaged the Games after they were abandoned by Victoria midway through 2023, but that means they’re operating on a reduced program.

Unfortunately, rugby sevens, hockey, cricket, beach volleyball and table tennis are among the sports that haven’t made the cut. But swimming, athletics, lawn bowls and netball are some of the crowd favourites to return for the 10-sport program.

Australia topped the medal tally at Birmingham 2022, but they’ll be without two of their most notable gold medal winners – Ariarne Titmus, who retired from professional swimming, and Kaylee McKeown, who has withdrawn due to illness.
