    Gold climbs back above $US4600 as investors weigh Fed rate path

    The Australian sharemarket tumbled the most in three months as traders and economists ramped up bets on a fourth interest rate rise by the Reserve Bank of Australia this year following a hot inflation report.

    The S&P/ASX 200 Index dropped 1 per cent, or 89.60 points, to 9038.20, the most since early June amid broad selling, with nine of the 11 sectors weaker as traders also digested another round of corporate earnings.

    Money markets imply a 50:50 chance the cash rate will rise to 4.6 per cent at the September 29 policy meeting, up from 13 per cent earlier this week and are almost fully priced by the end of the year.

    ASX slumps on rate hike calls; Qantas lifts, Wesfarmers, Sigma slump

    The Australian sharemarket had its biggest slump in 12 weeks as bets firmed for another interest rate rise as early as next month and investors digested another flood of results from companies including Qantas and Wesfarmers.

    The S&P/ASX 200 fell 89.60 points, or 1 per cent, to 9038.20 on Thursday, with all 11 sectors in the red bar healthcare and industrials. The losses came after the bourse fell 0.4 per cent on Wednesday as shock inflation figures put another rate hike on the table. Wall Street drifted through a quiet session overnight after a report showed US inflation was also worse than expected.

    Expectations of another rate rise by the Reserve Bank firmed after the Australian Bureau of Statistics said on Wednesday underlying inflation in July had unexpectedly risen by 0.5 per cent. The gauge most watched by the RBA had been forecast to ease, but instead remained steady at 3.6 per cent.

    ANZ, CBA now tipping interest rates hike in November

    Two of Australia’s big four banks on Thursday reversed their forecast for interest rates, predicting they will rise by 0.25 per cent in November.

    The Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ) and Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) believe Wednesday’s inflation figures will pressure the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) to lift the cash rate to 4.6 per cent in five weeks.

    If that happens, it would be the highest cash rate setting the country has seen since October 2011.

    The moves come after Wednesday’s figures put inflation for the 12 months to July at 3.5 per cent, and the all-important trimmed mean – the Reserve Bank of Australia’s favoured underlying measure – at 3.6 per cent.

    Inflation figures may worry Reserve Bank

    Mortgage borrowers looking for interest rate relief might be disappointed by today's inflation figures.

    The Bureau of Statistics data show the annual headline inflation rate dropped to 3.5 percent, down from 3.8 percent.

    But the Reserve Bank's preferred measure was steady and still well outside its target.

    Fears grow for fourth rate hike after Australia sees higher-than-expected July inflation

    Fears are growing that the Reserve Bank will hit millions of mortgage holders with a fourth rate hike this year, after inflation eased in July but by far less than expected.

    Consumer prices climbed by 3.5% through the year, down from 3.8% in the previous month, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

    That compared unfavourably to the forecast 3.3% annual rate predicted by economists leading into the result.

    The Reserve Bank’s preferred underlying inflation measure, which removes the most volatile prices, had been expected to moderate but instead was stuck at 3.6%.

    For years, the McGold Card sounded like the sort of thing that let you stroll into any Macca’s, flash some shiny plastic and order enough nuggets to concern Ronald McDonald himself. It’s been a fixture of McDonald’s lore in the US since the ’60s, and now, for the first time, nine lucky Australians will receive “Free Macca’s for Life”.

    The Australian McGold Card doesn’t quite get you the free-for-all you might imagine. According to McDonald’s, “Free Macca’s for Life” in Australia actually means $30 a week for 40 years. Which, if you do the maths, works out to be $1,560 a year, or $62,400 if you manage to squeeze every dollar out of the card for the next four decades. Still, that’s a lot of nuggs.

    Like all his answers, this one is slow and considered; Elordi doesn’t do throwaway lines.

    “Because they never lie,” he goes on. “This dog is incredibly well-trained. Her sole job is responding to me, so it was kind of an easy task. [And] because her focus is entirely on me, she’s entirely dedicated between action and cut. The word ‘Action’ makes her spring to life and ‘Cut’ is when she knows she gets a reward. So in the scene, she’s probably the truest scene partner I’ve had.”

    President Donald Trump announced "major combat operations" against Iran on Feb. 28, with massive joint U.S.-Israeli strikes targeting military, government and infrastructure sites.

    Freddy casts doubt on Storm, Broncos promise ahead of rule trial

    League legend Brad Fittler has cast doubt on Melbourne and Brisbane’s claims that the captain, and not coach, will decide whether to kick off or receive as the NRL trials a rule change on Thursday night.

    The Storm and Broncos will be guinea pigs as the league trials a new rule which allows the team that concedes a try to decide whether they kick off, or receive the kick-off.

    The captain of the conceding team will have to inform the referee of their decision and both Melbourne and Brisbane plan to leave it in their hands, and not be influenced by the coaching staff.
