Pope Leo arrives in Turkey on first foreign trip

ANKARA, Turkey — Pope Leo XIV touched down in the conflict-ridden Middle East on the first international trip of his papacy, urging peace and hoping to help the Catholic Church heal centuries-old divisions with other religions and denominations.

As his fellow countrymen celebrate Thanksgiving, the first American pontiff’s plate will be full on a six-day tour of Turkey and Lebanon that will be closely scrutinized. He plans to meet with religious and political leaders, lead Mass in both countries and try to provide a boost to long-suffering Christian communities throughout the region.

Ahead of his trip, Leo shared a Thanksgiving message with NBC News in which he encouraged all people “to say ‘thank you’ to someone” and “to recognize that we have all received so many gifts, first and foremost the gift of life.”

First American pontiff arrives in the Turkish capital, Ankara, where he meets President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Pope Leo XIV has met with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Turkiye on his first foreign trip as the leader of the Roman Catholic Church, which will also include a visit to Lebanon.

Leo landed in the capital, Ankara, shortly after midday (09:00 GMT) on Thursday for what is a crowded three-day itinerary in Turkiye before heading to Lebanon. The trip will be closely watched as Leo makes his first speeches overseas and visits sensitive cultural sites.

After paying his respects at a mausoleum for Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkiye, Leo held talks with Erdogan, who is seen as a key player for peace efforts in a region fraught with conflict.

    Injury Update: Nic Martin

Nic Martin had successful knee surgery yesterday after consultation with his surgeon this week.

Martin suffered a setback after a minor training incident a couple of weeks ago. Follow-up scans confirmed damage to the recently reconstructed knee.

After consulting the surgeon and the Club’s high-performance and medical team, Martin elected to have surgery to give himself the strongest long-term outcome.

“It’s obviously a setback, but I have complete confidence in our medical and high-performance team and our long-term plan for me,” Martin said.

“I’m feeling good post-surgery and I’m ready to take the time to build my knee back up and I know I’m in the best hands possible, and I’ll attack this rehab with everything I’ve got to come back stronger.”

Bomber blow as gun ruled out for 2026 after further knee surgery

ESSENDON gun Nic Martin will miss the 2026 season after undergoing further surgery on his knee following a training accident.

Martin was hurt at training earlier this month and, after scans confirmed damage to his recently reconstructed knee, underwent further surgery on Thursday.

The 24-year-old, who had been impressing in his recovery from the initial surgery, will take a long-term focus in a bid to be ready for day one of pre-season ahead of the 2027 campaign.

"It's obviously a setback, but I have complete confidence in our medical and high performance team and our long-term plan for me," Martin said.

"I'm feeling good post-surgery and I'm ready to take the time to build my knee back up and I know I'm in the best hands possible, and I'll attack this rehab with everything I've got to come back stronger."

Essendon injury crisis deepens as star to miss entire 2026 season

Essendon Bombers midfielder Nic Martin will miss the full 2026 season after undergoing a follow-up surgery on his knee on Thursday.

Martin was set to miss most of next year after tearing his ACL in Round 18 against Richmond, but an innocuous slip at training earlier in November sparked fresh concerns for his recently reconstructed knee.

The 24-year-old then underwent scans, which confirmed damage to the knee.

It's devastating timing for Martin, who had been "impressing in his recovery" from the major setback, but will now have to wait until 2027 to take to the football field again competitively.

However, the young star remained optimistic despite the brutal blow, confident the Bombers medical and high performance team can get him back to his 2024 best, where he averaged 28.3 disposals per game.

Don’t expect a sweltering start to summer: Melbourne’s notorious “four seasons in one day” weather will be in full swing from the beginning of December.

A sluggish start has been tipped for the warmer months after some of the heaviest spring rainfall in more than a decade.

“We’re in the midst of an unseasonably cool November overall,” said Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Angus Hines. “It has been a little bit of a sluggish start to summer.

Sound of lightning captured on Mars — but it's nothing like on Earth

NASA's Perseverance rover captured audio of dozens of lightning-like electric discharges.  (Supplied: NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS)

Researchers say more than 50 instances of lightning on Mars were detected on audio recordings from the Perseverance rover — the first time such data has been captured.

The team suggested dust devils and dust storms could be to blame, mimicking a similar electricity-producing mechanism that also happens on Earth.

While experts said the audio evidence was "persuasive", photo or video evidence of the actual flashes would be needed to confirm lightning on Mars.

After decades of searching, it seems that lightning does occur on Mars — but it's nothing like the large bolts we experience on Earth.

Lightning is among the most energetic manifestation of electrical activity in planetary atmospheres, with documented observations not only on Earth but also on Saturn and Jupiter1. On Mars, the existence of electrical activity has long been suspected2,3 but never directly demonstrated. The dusty atmosphere of Mars undergoes aeolian processes, ranging from wind-blown dust and sand, metre-to-hundred-metre-sized dust devils to thousand-kilometre-scale dust storms4, which, in Earth’s deserts, can become electrified through triboelectric charging5,6,7. For this reason, electric fields have been predicted to build up on Mars8,9,10, but with no measurement of Martian atmospheric electrical activity so far. Here we report in situ detections of triboelectric discharges, identified by their electrical and acoustic signatures captured by the SuperCam microphone aboard the Perseverance rover11,12. Fifty-five events have been detected over two Martian years, usually associated with dust devils and dust storm convective fronts. These serendipitous observations demonstrate that Martian electric fields can reach the breakdown threshold of the near-surface atmosphere of Mars, predicted to be on the order of several tens of kV m−1. Such electrical activity could affect dust dynamics13,14 and potentially fuel a reactive electrochemical environment enhancing the oxidizing capacity of the atmosphere, with consequences for the preservation of organic molecules15,16. This in situ evidence may have implications for surface chemistry, habitability and human exploration.

Scientists have detected what they believe to be lightning on Mars by eavesdropping on the whirling wind recorded by NASA's Perseverance rover.

The crackling of electrical discharges was captured by a microphone on the rover, a French-led team reported Wednesday.

The researchers documented 55 instances of what they call "mini lightning" over two Martian years, primarily during dust storms and dust devils. Almost all occurred on the windiest Martian sols, or days, during dust storms and dust devils.

What happened to Derrick Henry? Why Ravens RB disappeared in 2nd quarter of Week 13

After a strong start to the game, Baltimore Ravens running back Derrick Henry was nowhere to be found over the final two drives of the second quarter in the Week 13 game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Henry finished the first half with five carries for 33 yards and one touchdown, with the score coming on a 28-yard scamper.

However, after a carry late in the first quarter, Henry didn't get another the rest of the first half and only saw one snap as far as we could tell.

As far as we know, Henry is not dealing with an injury.

So, it would appear Henry was just getting some rest on the first of the Ravens' two second-quarter drives.

BALTIMORE — In a season when they've both been tested by injuries, Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson and Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow look to prove they're still among the NFL's best quarterbacks, just like they did during a Thursday night game at M&T Bank Stadium a year ago.

In a wild 35-34 victory by the Ravens last season, Burrow threw for 428 yards and four touchdowns — only to be outdone by Jackson's three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter. Flashing their different styles and strengths, they went back-and-forth to dazzle a national television audience, from Burrow hitting Ja'Marr Chase in stride for a 70-yard touchdown to Jackson delivering a game-winning, 5-yard touchdown toss with a follow-through that resembled a floating jump shot.

Zay Flowers Leading receiver in Week 12 win

Flowers caught five of six targets for 58 yards and rushed twice for 11 yards in Sunday's 23-10 win over the Jets.

Flowers accounted for 58 of Lamar Jackson's 153 passing yards while no teammate exceeded 30 receiving yards. The shifty wide receiver is the top option in Baltimore's passing game, but the Ravens haven't gotten much going through the air in recent weeks, as Jackson has just one passing touchdown over the past three games while throwing for fewer than 200 yards in each of those outings. Flowers has caught 58 of 77 targets for 761 yards but has only one touchdown heading into Thursday's home game against the Bengals on Thanksgiving night.

Zay Flowers Week 12 Outlook – Jets at Ravens

Zay Flowers is the WR21 in fantasy points per game, commanding a 26.7% target share with 70.3 receiving yards per game, 2.48 yards per route run, and a 32.5% first-read share. Flowers leads the team with nine deep targets and ranks second with only five red zone targets. This week, he faces a Jets' secondary that, since Week 8, has utilized two high at the third-highest rate (61.2%). Against two high, Flowers leads the team with a 21% target per route run rate and 1.82 yards per route run. He should be heavily involved this week. Since Week 7, the Jets have ranked 15th in fantasy points per game allowed to perimeter wide receivers. This isn't a secondary to fear.
