How Nick Kyrgios redeemed himself in the eyes of this Sydney director

Despite getting accidentally locked in a tennis club toilet as a child, Sam McDonagh of Swimply Australia and Rent.com.au has loved the game all his life.

Sam McDonagh is adviser and non-executive director at Swimply Australia, an online marketplace for renting private leisure spaces, and chairman and non-executive director at rent.com.au, a platform for renters. He lives in Sydney.

How did you start playing tennis?I grew up in Western Australia, and my mum played tennis for many years. My first memory of being on a tennis court was at the Wembley Downs Tennis Club with Mum when I was three or four years old. I accidentally got locked in the change rooms and was too small to reach the door handle to get out. Following that illustrious beginning, in the ’70s and ’80s tennis racquets were a staple on family holidays in Dunsborough, where we played on the bitumen courts between the beach house and the bakery.

Kyrgios or Kim Jong Un? Sinner slaps Aussie with ultimate backhander during Australian Open

The spat between Nick Kyrgios and Jannik Sinner has escalated with the world no.2 unsure if he would rather spend time with North Korea leader Kim Jong Un or the controversial Aussie.

Tension between the two tennis stars has been brewing in recent years with Kyrgios outspoken after Sinner received a transparent three-month ban for testing positive to clostebol in 2024 – a banned steroid.

Sinner has largely remained silent through all criticism of his suspension, but revealed his contempt for Kyrgios during the Pod Laver Arena podcast.

When asked if he would rather play doubles with Jong-Un or Kyrgios, Sinner gave the expected answer, but he surprised when queried about hanging out with the Aussie.

MELBOURNE, Australia — Top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka defeated a tenacious Bai Zhouxuan of China 6-3, 6-1 Wednesday to reach the third round of the Australian Open.

Sabalenka raced to a 5-0 lead in the first but then needed seven set points at Rod Laver Arena to take the set against the defensive-minded Chinese player, who used clever drop shots to help her stay in the match.

"I was happy to get this win, a tricky opponent," Sabalenka said. "She really stepped in in the first set."

Aryna Sabalenka is crediting her long-lost mental demons for taking her tennis to new grand slam-winning heights after charging into the Australian Open third round in Melbourne.

The world No.1 outclassed Chinese qualifier Zhuoxuan Bai 6-3 6-1 to post a 22nd win from her past 23 matches at Melbourne Park.

But while it's all happy days now for the Belarusian, Sabalenka believes she would not be a four-time major winner without having to endure the depressing serving yips that once defined her as a grand slam under-achiever.

Hanfmann’s medical timeout is continuing, with the big German still receiving treatment on his left ribcage as Alcaraz paces the baseline.

Hanfmann has given absolutely everything to this one and despite being two sets down has probably given Alcaraz – and most observers – a much bigger fight than they were expecting. However, this might have taken a toll on the German, with his shirt of multiple physios called out to assess him.

The chair is saying he’s got an issue with his left rib cage.

ATP Australian Open Best Bets Including Alcaraz vs Hanfmann

Reilly Opelka has won three of his last five matches. This week in Melbourne, the American defeated Budkov Kjaer in the opening round in straight sets. He offered and saved two breakpoints. Last season in Melbourne, Opelka lost to Machac in the second round in five tight sets.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has won three of his last five matches. Last week in Adelaide, the Spaniard lost to Humbert in the semifinals in three sets. This week in Melbourne, Davidovich Fokina demolished Misolic in straight sets. He offered and saved four breakpoints.

According to the bookies, Opelka is the underdog in this matchup, but we disagree. He dominated in the opening match against Budkov Kjaer. We expect several tiebreaks and a tight match that could go either way.

Aryna Sabalenka has refused to buy into the political debate sparked by Ukrainian player Oleksandra Oliynykova, who told this masthead on Tuesday that all Russian and Belarusian players should be banned while the war in Ukraine continues.

The Canadian teen is the talk of the town after a stunning surge up the rankings, starting last year outside the top 300 and soaring to world No.16.

The rise seemed to have even surprised Mboko, who set herself a goal 12 months ago of being able to play in qualifying for the majors.

Victoria Mboko did not face a single break point while defeating Emerson Jones 6-4, 6-1 to earn her first career main-draw win at Melbourne Park.

Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko advanced to the second round of the Australian Open with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Australian wild card Emerson Jones at Melbourne Park on Monday.

The 17th-seeded Mboko, appearing as a seed in a Grand Slam main draw for the first time, broke serve in the seventh game of the opening set and held on to take it 6-4. The Canadian, ranked No. 17 on the WTA Tour Driven by Mercedes-Benz, broke twice early in the second set to race to a 4-0 lead before breaking Jones again in the seventh game to seal the match in 1 hour, 12 minutes.

    Heat's Kel'el Ware: Won't play Tuesday

Ware (hamstring) has been ruled out for Tuesday's game in Sacramento.

Ware is dealing with some tightness in his hamstring, so the Heat will err on the side of caution with their second-year center on the second leg of a back-to-back set. His absence will open up minutes for Nikola Jovic. For now, Ware should be considered questionable for Thursday's game in Portland.

Kel'el Ware now questionable for Heat tonight at Sacramento with tightness in his right hamstring.

Ware played 18 minutes in Monday’s loss to the Warriors. His fantasy upside has been limited when healthy in a decreased role.

British No 1 Emma Raducanu is wary of her second-round opponent Anastasia Potapova at the Australian Open on Wednesday.

Raducanu was unimpressed by being scheduled in the night session on Sunday for her opening match but the positive is, having prevailed against Thailand's world No 195 Mananchaya Sawangkaew 6-4 6-1, she has two days to prepare for a second-round match with Potapova.

They have not contested a match before but Raducanu has been aware of the Russian-turned-Austrian's talent for a long time, saying: "I remember watching Anastasia all through juniors. I was the year below her.

Emma Raducanu next match LIVE: Date, UK time, opponent and how to follow Australian Open second round clash

Emma Raducanu is into the second round of the Australian Open but has a tough task ahead if she is to go deep in Melbourne.

Raducanu is the 28th seed in the first Grand Slam of the year and beat Thailand's world number 241 Mananchaya Sawangkaew in her opening clash.

Being seeded, the 23-year-old British number one has avoided the best players in the world in the opening rounds.

But in a cruel blow, she's still be handed the toughest possible task early on in the major should she make it.

Raducanu got her major campaign underway against Sawangkaew on the opening day of the tournament and won 6-4, 6-1.

Raducanu given potential Sabalenka obstacle in Melbourne

Raducanu lost to Sabalenka in the Wimbledon third round last year

Emma Raducanu's hopes of a smoother Australian Open run have been dashed by another potential third-round match against world number one Aryna Sabalenka.

British number one Raducanu is seeded at a major for the first time since the 2022 US Open but has been pitted against the top seed at the earliest opportunity.

The 23-year-old will face Thailand's Mananchaya Sawangkaew in her opening match, with Austria's Anastasia Potopova or Suzan Lamens of the Netherlands waiting in the second round.

Two-time winner Sabalenka starts against French wildcard Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah, while defending champion Madison Keys – who beat Sabalenka in last year's final – plays Ukraine's Oleksandra Oliynykova.
