    Online gambling has been in the news a fair bit recently, with the ease of getting into online sportsbook betting becoming a hotly contested issue in the United States and popular prediction markets being subjected to increased controversy and government scrutiny. It's hardly limited to the United States, however, as illicit online gambling has wide appeal across much of Asia, despite local laws forbidding much of it.

    South Korea in particular has seen an uptick in online gambling, particularly among youth, many of whom have gone to extreme lengths to obtain money to spend on gambling or cover their debts. To help combat the growing problem, the government has teamed up with one of the most famous figures in global esports, League of Legends prodigy Lee Sang-hyeok, better known by the handle "Faker."

    Professional gamer "Faker" Lee Sang-hyuk, dubbed the legend of the online game "League of Legends (LoL), wore a police uniform. As a global e-sports star has emerged as a face of prevention of cyber gambling among adolescents, he will take on the role of correcting perceptions of confusing games and gambling and delivering "courage to escape gambling" to teenagers.

    The National Police Agency said on the 22nd that it appointed Faker as an honorary police officer and an ambassador for cyber gambling prevention. The police explained that they comprehensively considered self-management and moderation, high awareness at home and abroad, and positive influence on teenagers.

    Albanese flags new fuel announcements as petrol prices tipped to spike further

    Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says his government is not planning to extend the fuel excise discount but has foreshadowed there will be further announcements on fuel in the coming days.

    The 32 cents a litre fuel excise discount expired 30 June but was extended by another month at 16 cents a litre.

    That discount is set to expire 2 August, at which point Australian drivers will no longer be shielded from price increases at the bowser.

    Petrol and diesel prices have risen sharply in the past week. In Melbourne, unleaded rose six per cent to $1.80 per litre, while diesel rose 12 per cent to $2.17.

    Discount ends for drivers

    Pain at the pump is about to worsen for Australian drivers, when the fuel excise returns at the end of the week.

    Federal government says fuel supply 'solid and secure' as prices climb again

    The federal government is moving to reassure motorists about Australia's fuel supply as the conflict between the United States and Iran re-escalates once again.

    Oil prices tipped over $US100 ($143) a barrel this week for the first time since May, with the national average unleaded 91 price at $1.88 per litre on Saturday and diesel at $2.30.

    The fuel excise discount is due to expire on August 2, having been halved this month to 16 cents per litre.

    The federal government is moving to reassure motorists about Australia's fuel supply as petrol prices rise amid renewed clashes in the five-month-old war in the Middle East.

    It is understood Ms Allan will be offered the opportunity to resign on Monday, and if she refuses, is expected to face a leadership challenge on Tuesday. 

    Premier Jacinta Allan faces a leadership challenge this week, four months out from the November state election, despite core supporters talking down the threat of a spill.

    Kingborough Lions United are preparing for the biggest match in the club’s history, with more than 3,000 fans expected to pack Kitchen Centre Park in Kingston when they host A-League giants Melbourne Victory in the Hahn Australia Cup round of 32.

    The club will welcome the A-League side today with the match kicking off at 5pm.

    Club coach Jon Fenech said preparations at their home ground were well advanced after the club worked closely with Kingborough Council to get the facility ready for such a big clash.

    “The club’s come together. There’s a lot of work being done at the ground to get the facility ready for the big game and everyone’s excited.”

    For months we’ve wondered what was going on with Morgan Smithies. Now we have our answer, with reports that Smithies will join Perth on a three-year deal from next season.

    It ends a short Canberra stay for Smithies. He came to the club in 2024 and had his best season then, doing a slightly dour impression of Corey Horsburgh’s role – big minutes, big tackles, a bit of passing. Before that season his passing game had been talked up, but it felt like something the club was trying to talk into existence, rather than something he demonstrated.

    He never quite found that capability consistently. He never found that power. Even in big minutes he didn’t break tackles (144th in the competition in tackle breaks in 2024), or make big metres. In 2025 as the Raiders thrived, he was relied on less. His output, his performance, and his minutes have dwindled. This season Jayden Brailey and Daine Laurie have been preferred in the middle to him. That is not good.

    Revealed: Eels in fight to keep star forward as rival launches three-club raid

    The Parramatta Eels are in a fight to retain veteran prop Junior Paulo as the Perth Bears move to land the former NSW forward away from western Sydney.

    Perth have reportedly tabled a two-year deal for the 32-year-old which, according to Code Sports reporter Michael Carryannis is “significantly” more money than what the Eels are prepared to offer the 32-year-old.
