Wimbledon disappointment fades fast as de Minaur, Boulter tie the knot

While the tennis world was fixated on Wimbledon’s centre court on Sunday afternoon for the grasscourt major’s finale as Jannik Sinner chased back-to-back crowns, the sport’s “power couple” – Alex de Minaur and Katie Boulter – caught everyone on the hop by getting hitched at the same time.

De Minaur and Boulter versus the world’s media? The two stars smashed them in straight sets, to be fair – 6-0, 6-0.

De Minaur, who rose to a career-high No.5 on the world rankings after his efforts at Wimbledon, and Great Britain’s world No.67 Boulter, have always done things their own way, happy to make knowledge of their relationship freely available, but at the same time keeping some key details close to their chests.

Tennis power couple Alex de Minaur and Katie Boulter secretly marry during Wimbledon final

Tennis stars Alex de Minaur and Katie Boulter quietly tied the knot in an intimate ceremony on Sunday, following their Wimbledon eliminations.

The Aussie world No.5, 27, married fiancée Boulter, 29, in a “low-key” church wedding near Boulter’s hometown in Leicestershire village, according to multiple outlets.

The wedding took place in front of family, just as the 2026 Wimbledon’s men’s final was under way between defending champion Jannik Sinner and opponent Alexander Zverev.

Both De Minaur and Boulter were defeated in the early rounds of Wimbledon this year.

Proteas coach on national team’s depth

van Dyk dropped six players when she announced her final team for the Games set to take place from 23 July to 2 August.

The Proteas are in Pool A with England, Malawi, Uganda, Australia, Tonga, and Northern Ireland, and with the Africa Cup of Nations set to be played later this year, she insists that the depth in the selection pool would allow the players to rest and give others a chance throughout the year.

"We had a team meeting on Monday discussing the period we are moving into now, where we don't just have seven players and twelve players that will do the job for us. We want to create the depth we need so that we can use different players in different competitions seeing that the season is getting quite hectic especially with some players playing overseas. For the Africa Cup, we have a very different plan in mind and we have already set out a squad for that."

Australian police reveal unseen photos 25 years after British backpacker murder

Police in Australia have released previously unseen photographs from their investigation into the murder of British backpacker Peter Falconio 25 years ago.

Falconio, from Huddersfield, was shot on a remote stretch of highway near the Northern Territory town of Barrow Creek, about 186 miles (300km) north of Alice Springs on 14 July 2001.

His body has never been found and police hope the images could jog memories that could lead to a tip-off. His killer, Bradley Murdoch, died of throat cancer aged 67 in jail last year, without disclosing where Falconio's remains might be.

The images include a full length picture of Murdoch staring straight at a camera during the police investigation.

A $500,000 reward for information remains on offer from NT Police and the commissioner says Murdoch's "cowardly silence" has denied the Falconio family closure.

After 25 years police are no closer to finding the body of murdered British backpacker Peter Falconio, but an expert in finding homicide victims believes he knows where the 28-year-old's remains could be.

Bastille Day events disrupted by heat, as France marks Nice attack anniversary

Firefighters in Paris and its close suburbs have decided to cancel their balls, as the heatwave that has hit the region and much of France has put a strain on emergency services.

The balls are a traditional part of the 14 July national holiday, with fire stations opening their doors to the public for an evening of dancing and entertainment.

The Paris fire brigade said the decision to cancel the "emblematic" events that are "close to the heart of the population" is "the most responsible" course of action to protect everyone.

Tourist attractions have been closing early, and some festivals and large events across France have been cancelled because of the heat.

July 14, 2026 in Melun: the guinguette stays open, the ceremony moved up, and the fireworks canceled.

WARNING: in line with the prefectural order issued amid the red heatwave alert, there will be no fireworks this year in Melun on July 13, 2026. The commemorative ceremony has been moved up, and the festivities remain on schedule.

It’s an event the French look forward to year after year! Every mid-July, the Fête nationale is celebrated all across the country. A chance for France to reaffirm its attachment to the Republic and the values of liberty, equality and fraternity. And the celebrations are plentiful: from the firefighters’ balls held at the barracks, to the grand bals des pompiers, to the military parade drawing curious crowds along the Champs-Élysées, and of course, the fireworks lighting up the skies on the 13th and 14th of July.

A referee removed from the 2026 World Cup following a police case in Britain that was later dropped, has died.

Dutch whistleblower Rob Dieperink was selected to be a VAR official at the tournament but was taken off FIFA’s list of World Cup officials in May.

The 38-year-old was arrested in April following a report of a sexual assault against a teenage boy, but the case was dropped because of a lack of evidence.

The Netherlands’ football association said they were “shocked and deeply saddened” by Dieperink’s death.

“We are shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of Rob Dieperink. With Rob, we lose a highly valued referee, but above all a kind and dedicated colleague,” the Dutch football association said in a statement.

Tom Cruise unveils remarkable transformation in Digger trailer: ‘I’ve never had something that could challenge me in this way’

The new Alejandro González Iñárritu film sees Cruise playing an eccentric oil baron on a mission to save the world

The first full length trailer for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s hotly anticipated comedy-drama Digger has been released, and with it audiences’ first look at Tom Cruise’s least recognisable role since he donned a fatsuit and prosthetics for 2008’s Tropic Thunder.

The film will be released worldwide in early October and stars Cruise as Digger Rockwell, “the most powerful man in the world” on a mission to save the world from an ecological disaster.

Ahead of the trailer’s launch, Cruise recently spoke to press and fans at an event the Warner Bros launch in Los Angeles, saying that it was unlike any project he had worked on before.

Tom Cruise’s next movie role is like nothing he’s done before

When you first lay eyes on the eccentric billionaire Digger Rockwell, what strikes you immediately is the age lines on his face, his protruding belly and his thinning hair, accented by a comb over borrowed from the 1970s. The one thing he certainly doesn’t look like is Tom Cruise, the 64-year-old movie star who plays him.

Cruise’s four-decade-long movie career has transitioned from compelling character pieces, like Rain Man, A Few Good Men and Jerry Maguire, to fast-paced blockbusters, backed up with spectacular stunt work, such as Top Gun, Minority Report and Mission: Impossible.

So what, exactly, is he doing in Digger, an edgy, absurdist comedy from Alejandro G. Iñárritu, hidden behind a skin suit of ugly-old-guy prosthetics?

Shark threat closes popular beaches, snorkelling spots along Ningaloo coast

Five whales have been seen entangled in fishing lines in as many days off Ningaloo Reef.

One has died, another was freed, and another three are unaccounted-for.

Authorities have urged the public to quickly report tangled whales, while some experts are calling for more preventative action.

The decomposing carcass of a humpback whale has closed two popular West Australian beaches in the middle of the school holidays as sharks converge on the area.

But experts say the cause of the whale's death is of greater concern.

Specialist rescuers were called to the 9-metre animal on Wednesday evening after it was spotted struggling in fishing lines near Osprey Bay, more than 1,300 kilometres north of Perth.

Kimberley and Pilbara local news briefing, July 14, 2026

Here's what's making news in the Kimberley and Pilbara regions today.

Two beaches on the Ningaloo Reef remain closed after a humpback whale was fatally injured by fishing line and attracted sharks to the swimming area.

The animal was one of five entangled whales spotted in the World Heritage site last week.

Sam Miles, marine program coordinator at the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, said one whale had been freed, but three were unaccounted for.

Exmouth wildlife carer Brinkley Davies said she was worried there could be more.

"I hate to think of how many we're going to see by the end of the season," she said.

Indigenous children living in remote communities are twice as likely to contract ear disease as those in regional and metropolitan areas, new findings show.
