Grill’d burger chain sued over alleged greenwashing by consumer watchdog

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission launches federal court action against restaurant over Tree Day Tuesday campaign

The consumer regulator has sued Grill’d over allegations the burger chain engaged in greenwashing by dramatically overstating how much money it was donating towards one of its key environmental campaigns.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) on Tuesday announced it had launched federal court action against Grill’d, alleging it misrepresented its Tree Day Tuesday campaign for more than three years.

The ACCC alleges that between January 2021 and April 2024, Grill’d represented to customers it would donate $1 from every burger purchased on a Tuesday towards the planting of trees.

Grill’d sued for allegedly duping customers over ‘Tree Day Tuesday’ donations

Grill’d is facing a lawsuit from the consumer watchdog which claims it misled millions of Australians by promising to donate $1 to the environment per burger sold on Tuesdays when only 4 per cent of purchases qualified under its complex terms.

The terms and conditions of the three-year “Tree Day Tuesday” campaign – which required that the orders be placed by Grill’d loyalty members, for in-store dining, at the front counter, with a separate barcode scanned – were so restrictive that only a fraction of the 5 million burgers sold qualified.

“We allege Grill’d misled customers by overstating the extent of the donations it would make and the environmental contributions from its Tree Day Tuesday promotion. We consider this to be a form of greenwashing,” said Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb.

Aussie fast food giant Grill’d sued after allegedly misleading customers over charity donations

Popular Australian fast food restaurant Grill'd is being taken to court over claims it misled customers over charity donations.

An Aussie fast food chain has been accused of misleading customers over charity donations.

Grill’d told customers it would donate $1 for every burger sold towards an ecological cause as part of a weekly offer.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), which has commenced proceedings against Grill'd in the Federal Court, has claimed this did not happen.

The consumer watchdog alleges Grill’d did not make clear that only burger sales that met several criteria would lead to a donation, meaning only four percent of sold burgers qualified.

China's ability to hit Australia with missiles 'real and growing', Lowy Institute says

The Lowy Institute says China has the ability to hit Australia with its DF-26 missile system. (Reuters: Andy Wong)

The Lowy Institute foreign policy think tank has produced a new report tracking the "dramatic" scale of Beijing's vast military build-up.

The analysis warns that the Chinese military can already hit Australia's trade routes, subsea cables and critical infrastructure and is developing a "real and growing" ability to hit the Australian mainland with missiles.

It says the threat to Australia would escalate "dramatically" if China secures a military base in the Pacific, or develops a bomber or drone that can reach Australia.

China’s ability to strike targets in Australia is ‘real and growing’

The rapid expansion of China’s nuclear-powered submarine fleet and long-range missile stockpile is fuelling its growing ability to hit targets in Australia, a threat that could expand dramatically over the next decade, new analysis warns.

A Lowy Institute paper, to be published on Monday, finds that China’s existing ability to strike the Australian mainland would be turbocharged by game-changing developments: the addition of a new long-range bomber to its military arsenal, as well as the ability to move existing assets closer to Australia via a military base in the Pacific.

The paper, based on open-source intelligence on China’s military modernisation, finds the Chinese navy is set to have 25 nuclear-powered attack submarines at its disposal by 2035, up from an estimated nine today.

Is Leo DiCaprio voting for Spencer Pratt?

Hello and welcome to Gossip Time, a weekly guide to the stars by Allie Jones. Today, we’re discussing, oh dear, Spencer Pratt’s campaign for LA mayor. This post is just for paid subscribers; if you’d like to sign up, you can do so in the box below.

It’s California primary day, and somehow, Spencer Pratt is polling third for LA mayor, right behind incumbent Karen Bass and progressive challenger Nithya Raman. The state has an open primary, so whoever the top two vote-getters are today will go to the general in November. I think the stakes are high enough now to note which celebrities are donating to and supporting Pratt’s campaign.

Australian referee Shaun Evans made an "OK" symbol below his waist during a live World Cup cross.

The symbol is used as both a harmless children's game and as a white power symbol in some far-right circles.

FIFA's discrimination monitor Fare called for Evans to be removed from the World Cup but the disciplinary committee "found no evidence of breaches of the FIFA disciplinary code".

The Australian referee at the centre of the World Cup hand gesture controversy has responded after calls to have him sacked from the tournament.

Zendaya and Tom Holland Just Made Their Red-Carpet Debut As Husband and Wife

“One day you’re a kid and you’re at the pub with your friends, and then the next day you’re Spider-Man,” Zendaya told British Vogue in 2024, reflecting on the speed with which her then-boyfriend Tom Holland’s life changed after the pair met on the set of Spider-Man: Homecoming back in 2016. “We were both very, very young, but my career was already kind of going, and his changed overnight,” she added. “He handled it really beautifully.”

Nearly a decade on, Zendaya and Holland occupy a unique place in the celebrity firmament: among Hollywood’s most visible couples, yet one of its most guarded and unknowable. Which is perhaps why their appearance at the Spider-Man: Brand New Day photo call in Madrid this afternoon—their first red-carpet appearance together since October 2024, and their first as husband and wife—felt momentous beyond the usual promotional fanfare of two romantic leads posing for the cameras. It was a case of life imitating art (if Marvel counts as art?) imitating life.

For the first time in four decades, Australian Crawl, one of the country's most celebrated rock bands, is getting back together.

Original frontman James Reyne will reunite with guitarist Simon Binks and drummer David Reyne for 10 shows in October and November, their first since the band split in 1986.

While James Reyne has continued to perform Australian Crawl material over the years, these shows mark the first time the band has reunited under the name.

Earlier this year, Binks and James Reyne filed a Federal Court application against former drummer Bill McDonough, who had registered trademarks relating to the band's name in the 1990s.

How we're combatting AI scams with security, legislation and more

You’ve seen the texts: fake package alerts, urgent bank warnings, panicked messages about your compromised account. Behind them is an AI-powered cybercrime network built to steal your passwords and credit cards. Today, we’re fighting back.

We’re filing a lawsuit to dismantle their infrastructure, coordinating with the FBI who will be taking law enforcement actions, and will continue to work with AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon to block these texts before they reach you. Litigation alone won’t end this. So Google is also advocating for federal legislation to make these protections permanent.

Our civil lawsuit targets an organized cybercrime operation known as the "Outsider Enterprise." Based in China and coordinating through Telegram, this network distributes "phishing kits" that allow criminals to blast out fake text campaigns that look like they’re from Google and other trusted brands.

Our team tests, rates, and reviews more than 1,500 products each year to help you make better buying decisions and get more from technology.

It's not just mainstream software firms like Adobe and Microsoft that have pivoted to the "as-a-service" model in recent years. We're now seeing major cybercrime groups charge a monthly subscription for software platforms that can help their users steal money.

Google is suing a major Chinese cybercrime operation, which it said facilitated scams targeting hundreds of thousands of victims, causing losses estimated in the millions.

Roughly 9,000 fake websites and more than 1 million fraudulent URLs are allegedly connected to the group, as well as 55,000 spam texts flagged by Android users in just two weeks in May. The tech giant claims that the group, Outsider Enterprise, distributes phishing kits that enable criminals to run fake text-message campaigns impersonating well-known brands such as Google.

Chinese cybercrime operation that used AI to scam 'hundreds of thousands of victims' sued by Google

Google is suing to dismantle the infrastructure behind an alleged massive AI-powered cybercrime operation.

On Friday, the tech giant announced a lawsuit against an alleged Chinese cybercrime network called Outsider Enterprise, which Google says uses AI in its campaigns to send scam text messages impersonating Google and other brands to steal passwords and credit card numbers.

Outsider Enterprise has financially scammed “hundreds of thousands of victims” with losses “estimated in the millions.” The group deployed 9,000 fake websites, one million fraudulent web domains, and 2.5 million texts sent to Android users in a two-week period, according to Google.

The company said, “55,000 spam texts were flagged by Android users in just two weeks this past May — that’s more than two text spam complaints a minute.”
