Some WA towns have begun restricting fuel sales to emergency service authorities only, closing petrol pumps to motorists.

It comes as fuel wholesalers ration their stock in response to the Iran war.

Federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen said panic buying, not supply issues was contributing to shortages.

Towns in regional WA have begun rationing fuel, selling it for emergency purposes only as the war in the Middle East begins to impact the state.

Drivers in at least two small towns are now barred from buying fuel, with supply reserved for emergency and essential services only.

Global oil prices surge past the US$100 mark for the first time since 2022

Global oil prices surged past the $100 (£74, AU$142) a barrel mark for the first time since 2022 as escalating military aggression in the Middle East continues to wipe 20m barrels of oil from the market each day.

Brent crude, the international benchmark, jumped 16.6% to $108.10 a barrel as the new week’s trading began in the Asia Pacific markets, the first time that market prices have soared above this key psychological threshold since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Tributes paid as grime star Dot Rotten dies, aged 37

Tributes have been paid to grime pioneer Dot Rotten, who has died at the age of 37.

The musician's death was confirmed to the BBC via his family. There were no details of the circumstances, although online reports suggested he had died in Gambia.

Born Joseph Ellis in Stockwell, London, he developed a distinctive sound that mixed hard-edged beats with emotional hooks; and worked with everyone from Chip and D Double E to Cher Lloyd and Ed Sheeran.

He scored a Top 20 hit in 2012 with the melancholy single Overload. The rapper said the song's lyrics were inspired by his experiences with "a major depression".

The beginner’s guide to the 2026 Formula 1 regulations

This is a season of change in F1. What are the important rules and regulations on which to keep an eye?

New Formula 1 season, new Formula 1 rules. This time of year in F1-land is always a little bewildering.

A field of brand-new cars emerges, there are a set of new regulations and some all-new jargon to go with it. It’s doubly tricky this year, with a full-on, ground-up reboot of the Championship featuring new engines, new aerodynamics and different ways of putting together a racing lap.

If you’re new to the sport – or even if you’re not – fear not, we’ve got you covered.

One reason to root for all 22 drivers on the 2026 F1 grid

My team is better than yours! Your favorite driver is chopped and will never win the big one!

Sports discourse can be toxic. Apparently you're no longer allowed to simply enjoy a race; you must declare allegiance, pick a side, and defend it to the death.

Formula 1 is full of colorful teams and drivers worthy of your support in 2026, though, so here's one reason to root for every single one of them this year.

Zak Brown has rebuilt McLaren in his own image: bold, ambitious and with a love of close, fair racing. The reigning constructors' champion has a clear identity, and in 2025 it proved it would stick to it. Love Papaya rules or loathe them, McLaren refused to blink, even when it risked costing the team everything. In a sport as cutthroat as F1, that conviction feels refreshingly bold.

F1 season predictions: Our picks for 2026’s title race, surprises and one ‘dumpster fire’

Illustration: Dan Goldfarb / The Athletic; Sona Maleterova, Ahmad AlShehab / Getty Images

That’s not a cliché — in 2026, it’s literally true of Formula 1. The cars are new, the engines are new, the rules are new, and the pecking order that Lando Norris mastered last season may already be obsolete.

A season of unknowns embarks this weekend, March 8, at the Australian Grand Prix. Our writers have staked out their predictions for the season below.

Luke Smith: Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren. Preseason testing did little to shake the thinking that Mercedes could be the team to beat this year, even with Ferrari’s eye-catching times. It’s going to be close between the leading four teams, and they’ll all win races — but Mercedes will come out on top.

Stocks pare losses as oil falls back below $100; Dow is down 300 points: Live updates

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell to start the week as U.S. crude oil moved below $100 a barrel amid rising concerns about a stagflationary environment for the U.S. economy of rising inflation and slowing growth.

The 30-stock index fell 328 points, or 0.7%, and is coming off its biggest weekly slide in nearly a year. The S&P 500 lost 0.2%, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.2%. That signifies a meaningful turnaround for the three indexes, as the Dow was down nearly 900 points, or 1.9%, at its low of the day, and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq were each lower by around 1.5%.

The broader market was helped off its lows by a rise in semiconductor stocks. Broadcom jumped more than 4%, while Micron Technology and Advanced Micro Devices gained almost 3% each. Nvidia climbed more than 1%.

JPMorgan Chase warns Iran war could trigger 10% stock market correction

Wall Street has spent the past week treating the Iran war like a nasty headline cycle: alarming and expensive — but maybe still survivable with enough denial and a functioning commodities desk. JPMorgan Chase, though, just gave that anxiety a number.

Bloomberg reported Monday that Andrew Tyler, the bank’s head of global market intelligence, has turned “tactically bearish” and warned that U.S. stocks aren’t prepared for a full correction as the war in Iran drags on and oil hits above $100 a barrel. To Tyler, that means the S&P 500 is at risk of falling about 10% from its peak to roughly 6,270, even as his position stayed predominantly neutral with no extreme de-risking.

Stocks Tank in Asia as Oil Price Surges

Stocks on Wall Street were modestly lower, while Asian and European markets tumbled.

River Akira Davis reported from Tokyo, Meaghan Tobin from Taipei, Taiwan, and Eshe Nelson from London.

Global markets came under renewed pressure at the start of the week, as surging oil prices stemming from the conflict in Iran weighed on stocks and bonds from New York to Tokyo.

The S&P 500 fell more than 1 percent at the open of trading on Monday, but recouped much of those losses by midday. Monday’s slide came after a drop of more than 2 percent last week, the biggest weekly decline for the benchmark index in about five months.

A virus without a vaccine or treatment is hitting California. What you need to know

This is read by an automated voice. Please report any issues or inconsistencies here.

A respiratory virus that doesn’t have a vaccine or a specific treatment regimen is spreading in some parts of California — but there’s no need to sound the alarm just yet, public health officials say.

A majority of Northern California communities have seen high concentrations of human metapneumovirus, or HMPV, detected in their wastewater, according to data from the WastewaterScan Dashboard, a public database that monitors sewage to track the presence of infectious diseases.

A Los Angeles Times data analysis found the communities of Merced in the San Joaquin Valley, and Novato and Sunnyvale in the San Francisco Bay Area have seen increases in HMPV levels in their wastewater between mid-December and the end of February.

What to know about the virus with no vaccine, treatment hitting certain states

Cases of human metapneumovirus, or HMPV, are hitting certain states, including California and New Jersey.

HMPV can cause upper and lower respiratory disease, and currently there is no vaccine to prevent it and no specific antiviral therapy to treat it, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Instead, medical care can be “supportive,” the CDC notes, which often involves treating symptoms. "Most people will recover on their own," the agency notes, but adds people who get sick should drink plenty of liquids, stay home and rest.

The Cleveland Clinic says treatments for the virus can include oxygen therapy if the patient has a hard time breathing.
