RBA interest rate relief this week could be brief as Australians told to 'buckle up'

After better than expected inflation data, most economists are expecting the Reserve Bank to hold rates steady when it meets this coming week. But borrowers are being warned not to be lulled into a false sense of security.

While household spending remains surprisingly resilient, and domestic driven parts of the CPI basket continue to run much to hot, a small minority of experts think the RBA could defy expectations on Tuesday and hike rates.

A majority of experts polled by consumer site Finder found more than 90 per cent expect a hold. Only three of the 38 believe we are in for a hike this week.

The prediction follows a surprise fall in inflation, despite it still being well above the bank's target band of two to three per cent.

An increase weeks before the start of the spring selling season would draw a much clearer line between monetary policy and the troubles in our housing markets.

I expect to see the Reserve Bank monetary policy board, with a 4-3 vote, increase the cash rate by 0.25 of a percentage point on Tuesday.

A rate rise would serve a number of purposes, amplified by the very low probability markets are putting on a move.

Greyhound racing in Wales may be facing a total ban but the equine equivalent is enjoying a boom and the country’s most famous track at Chepstow celebrated its centenary this week.

Conca D’Oro won the first race run there on 6 August, 1926, and since then the racecourse has hosted many great days, and not just over fences since National Hunt racing arrived in 1927 just months after the 370-acre estate had opened for business.

Chepstow is best known for the Welsh Grand National run every year during the Christmas holidays but the 20th century great Sir Gordon Richards famously rode 11 consecutive winners on the Flat over a two-day meeting in 1933.

At a recent nutrition conference in Washington, DC, with more than 3,000 professionals, I asked around about what we should all be eating more of. While everyone had a different answer, nearly all agreed on what to avoid: cutting back on sugary drinks is a simple way to improve your health.

The dietitians (and doctors and researchers) I spoke with had a long list of reasons you should consider swapping out soda, from blood sugar crashes to potential links to increased cancer risk.

One of Netflix’s biggest sleeper shows has returned, My Life with the Walter Boys, attempting to fill the void that The Summer I Turned Pretty may have left in some hearts after that series ended on Amazon.

But My Life with the Walter Boys has been around a while as well by now, and we have just arrived at season 3. The Rotten Tomatoes review score is in from a handful of critics, and it is…genuinely surprising, a perfect 100%.

This is an enormous step up from the last two seasons, though it continues a positive trajectory.

This is one of those series where there is a mismatch between viewership and critical coverage. While there are not many reviews in for the show’s third season, that was also true of the other two, despite it being a top-watched Netflix series.
