How to watch & talking points: Melbourne v Tasmania

‍Live scores, stats, breaking news and game highlights are available via the new and improved NBL App.

Running out of timeWhile Melbourne United still sit comfortably within the post-season picture, they are running out of time to find their early season form.

Losing both games last round, to the Cairns Taipans and then an undermanned Sydney team would have further added to their mental burden since the FIBA Break ended.

United face a big test against a Tasmania team that is playing the most complete basketball of their season and looking to push towards a home Play-In game.

The Tassie way is backEver since the JackJumpers entered the competition, they’ve had a unique play style that might not always be the most entertaining to watch – yet it’s very successful.

NBL Betting Tips – NBL Round 17 -HOOPSFEST 2025 Predictions

Round 17 brings us HoopsFest, with all the games out of Perth’s RAC Arena.

The wheels have fallen off for United, going just 2 – 8 over their last ten games and falling from first to fourth on the ladder. A win here really helps steady their freefall, with Tassie still three wins off threatening to leapfrog Melbourne.

Krebs saw more minutes last game and rewarded Coach Vickerman with a 12-point, 9-rebound performance. His long-range shot is a threat, and he helps spread the floor, allowing Jesse Edwards more room to move and Walker and Doyle access to driving lanes.

Melbourne can use this game as a turning point in resurrecting their season and Krebs should see close to twenty minutes here, to grab 4+ boards.

    DrinkWise Preview: NBL26 – Round 17 v Tasmania JackJumpers

We are set to head over to Perth for a showcase of basketball when we take on the Tasmania JackJumpers on Saturday night from 9:30pm inside RAC Arena.

It will be a battle of two teams looking to do all they can to strengthen their ladder position across the final third of the season.

A win would see us bring an end to a three-game slide, while the JackJumpers have won three of their last four games, all of which have been decided by less than 10 points.

Leading into the matchup, Head Coach Dean Vickerman stressed the importance of getting back to playing our brand of basketball come Saturday evening.

His & Hers review – this glossy thriller is ideal new year TV

This six-part adaptation of the bestselling 2020 novel about a murder investigation is twisty, absurd and bingeable. It’s great January viewing

A woman lies bloodied and twitching her last on the bonnet of a car parked deep in a wood. Another woman arrives home bloodied, gasping with fear and for wine, and starts scrubbing her hands before clearing her flat of – well, everything.

A female voiceover intones that there are two sides to every story. “Which means someone is always lying.” Absolute nonsense, obviously, but it sounds great and more importantly it confirms what we were hoping: that we are in the presence of a glossy, efficient adaptation of a bestselling thriller and it is time to switch off our brains and enjoy (unless you are the type who likes to try to solve the mystery before the characters do, in which case, Godspeed and let me know where you get the energy from).

This week’s top picks include a juicy and completely ludicrous new Netflix drama; the return of one of HBO’s most exciting TV series; and another season of Abbott Elementary, the best American sitcom of the decade.

Intermittently in this murder-mystery, Tessa Thompson’s Anna Andrews delivers solemn, narration. “The most dangerous thing we do is lie to others,” she notes, pausing for maximum effect before adding, “and ourselves”. These contemplations, expertly laced with regretful menace, are a smokescreen, as are the nuanced performances of Thompson and co-star Jon Bernthal.

Manchester United vs Manchester City LIVE: Latest Updates, scores, commentary, analysis from Manchester derby

Manchester United kick off the new Michael Carrick-era with the small matter of the Manchester derby as Arsenal-chasing Manchester City arrive at Old Trafford looking to keep up the pressure on the Premier League table toppers. You can follow it all live, right here with ESPN (the blog will appear below the short preview text).

The last time Michael Carrick took charge of Man United, they beat Villarreal, drew Chelsea and beat Arsenal but that was four and some years ago, and what's ahead of him is a whole different proposition. United are coming off the disastrous reign of Ruben Amorim and find themselves out of both EFL and FA Cups and need a proper top 4 challenge to salvage the season. On contract only till this summer, Carrick's task is multifold: help with that challenge, lift the mood at Old Trafford, and integrate United's academy players into the senior team in a way Amorim never did. He was often accused of tactical inflexibility at Middlesborough — where he started brightly before fading towards the end — and he'll be keen to redress that at a club that, as Amorim found out, demands at least a certain degree of flexibility.

Djokovic explains his exit from the PTPA: “My name was being overused”

MELBOURNE – Novak Djokovic laid out the reasons behind his decision to step away from the players’ union he helped create.

“I felt my name was being overused. Whenever people think about the PTPA, they think it’s my organization, and that was wrong from the very beginning,” explained the 10-time Australian Open champion ahead of his 21st appearance at the tournament.

“I didn’t like the direction the leadership was taking with the PTPA, and that’s why I decided to step out,” he confessed.

Djokovic founded the Professional Tennis Players Association in 2020 alongside Canadian player Vasek Pospisil. The goal was to shake up the sport by taking power away from organizations such as the ATP (men’s tour), the WTA (women’s tour), the ITF (International Tennis Federation) and the Grand Slams, and handing it to the players.

Novak Djokovic Reveals Reasons For PTPA Exit, Still Driven For 25th Grand Slam Title

Novak Djokovic has revealed it was hard to leave the PTPA but believes it was the right decision as he now turns his attention towards a 25th Grand Slam title in Melbourne.

It’s been an eventful year for the 24-time Grand Slam champion without even stepping onto court for a competitive match.

Apart from Djokovic’s straight sets win over Frances Tiafoe at an exhibition match on Rod Laver Arena, the Serb has not had any competitive tournaments before the first Grand Slam of the year.

Despite that Djokovic is in high spirits as he bids for an eleventh title in Melbourne, “Well, happy new year to everyone. It’s great to be back another time,” Djokovic started his press conference by saying.

John McEnroe reaches worrying verdict on state of tennis after Novak Djokovic announcement

Tennis legend John McEnroe has thrown his support behind Novak Djokovic's efforts to establish the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), despite fierce resistance from fellow icons Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Djokovic recently announced he has stepped away from the organization he co-created with Vasek Pospisil back in September 2020.

The PTPA emerged as a breakaway union aimed at championing the rights of lower-ranked players. The group even took legal action against the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and Women's Tennis Association (WTA) tours last year. Djokovic's organization accused the major tennis governing bodies of engaging in "anti-competitive practices" and showing "a blatant disregard for player welfare."

WTA Hobart Day 3 Predictions Including Iva Jovic vs Renata Zarazua

The WTA Hobart has delivered some exciting tennis, and the third day Down Under even promises more. The last Aussie standing, Taylah Preston, will hope to continue her giant-killing run as she faces Slovakian Rebecca Sramkova. Will she have enough for another upset? We offer our predictions for the third day of action.

Taylah Preston grabbed Hobart headlines with an upset victory over Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, rallying to a straight-sets victory to notch only her third career main-draw win.

Preston’s reward is a clash with Rebecca Sramkova, who edged Varvara Gracheva in a tight match. Sramkova sits well above Preston on the ladder, but Preston can play with freedom, especially with the crowd behind her. Another upset could be lurking.
    Prediction: Preston in 3

Kings' Domantas Sabonis returns after 27-game absence

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

SACRAMENTO — Sacramento Kings All-Star forward Domantas Sabonis returned on Friday night against the Washington Wizards after a 27-game absence because of a partially torn meniscus in his left knee.

Sabonis came off the bench, entering with 5:11 left in the first quarter. He averaged 17.2 points and 12.3 rebounds in his first 11 games this season.

Sabonis was officially listed as questionable. His return capped a two-month recovery process, as Sabonis opted against surgery and carefully rehabbed his knee.

Sabonis is in his fifth season with the Kings and remains a name to watch as the Feb. 5 trade deadline nears. He has three years and $136.3 million left on his contract, and the rebuilding Kings, under new general manager Scott Perry, have been open to discussing trades for all their veterans with high-priced deals, league sources said.

NBA Kings' Domantas Sabonis set to return from injury Friday – Yahoo Sports Australia

Sacramento Kings forward Domantas Sabonis is set to return from injury on Friday night against the Washington Wizards, according to ESPN's Anthony Slater. Sabonis has been sidelined with a partial meniscus tear for the last 27 games.

Sabonis last played on Nov. 16, and in his 11 games this season, he's averaged 17.2 points, 12.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists. The three-time All-Star ultimately opted against surgery and rehabbed carefully, per Slater.

Trade speculation has surrounded Sabonis and the Kings in general, and that will only ratchet up as the deadline looms less than three weeks away. Sabonis signed a four-year, $186 million contract before the 2024-25 season, and has three years and $136.3 million remaining.

Kings' Domantas Sabonis expected to return as trade rumors heat up

The Sacramento Kings could see the return of their All-Star power forward Jan. 16 in their Friday night game against the Washington Wizards.

Kings forward Domantas Sabonis is officially listed as questionable on the NBA's Injury Report, but the team expects that he will suit up and play against the Wizards, according to ESPN.

Sabonis, a three-time All-Star, has missed the previous 27 games for the Kings with a partially torn meniscus.

He only appeared in 11 games so far this season, averaging 17.2 points and 12.3 rebounds.

In recent days, Sabonis was seen participating in shootaround during practices. Signs indicate he'll rejoin the court with the Kings soon. And at a good time, too.
