    30 under 30 2025

From pipe robots to Netflix heroes, 2025’s 30 Under 30 list is jam-packed with Australia’s brightest entrepreneurs, founders and stars, each making waves in their respective industries. Their success is not only reflected in funding (of which our founders have banked more than $150 million in capital), but also viewership, streams and sales.

In technology, AI takes centre stage. Take Relevance AI: Jacky Koh, Daniel Vassilev and Daniel Palmer have raised $42 million to date to help companies develop their own AI agents to automate tasks without coding. Then there’s Kai van Lieshout – the 23-year-old behind Lyrebird, an AI-powered clinical documentation platform that automates scribing and administrative tasks directly from patient-doctor conversations. It has just raised $12 million this June, valuing the two-year-old start-up at $50 million.

‘Heated Rivalry’ Review: HBO Max’s Horny Hockey Drama Is a Playful Gay Romance for Grown-Ups

'Letterkenny' veteran Jacob Tierney wrote and directed the six-part series about a pair of rising hockey stars who fall into a steamy affair.

Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin entered the NHL in 2005. Over 20 years, the Canadian star and his Russian counterpart have engaged in one of the great rivalries in all of sports. They’ve won titles and medals and scoring crowns, and they’re both still playing (with the same franchises that drafted them), having claimed positions among hockey’s all-time elite.

But what if they were also having an intense, sweaty love affair?

That’s the veiled hypothetical at the heart of HBO Max and Crave‘s new six-part romantic drama, Heated Rivalry, based on the book by Rachel Reid and written and directed by Letterkenny veteran Jacob Tierney — though don’t go in expecting all that many direct similarities to Letterkenny. Heated Rivalry may have some comic elements, because blustery male bonding is often funny, but it’s a sincere, steamy love story for grown-ups — less The Cutting Edge and more Challengers, without the pesky “Zendaya” point of the triangle.

The sexual tension, intense yearning, and tender moments between Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie) on Heated Rivalry has viewers losing their minds while watching the new HBO Max series based on Rachel Reid's series of books that's being brought to life by showrunner Jacob Tierney.

Thousands of Australians losing free-to-air TV access and facing internet issues

Customers of a private fibre-optic network provider say in addition to experiencing regular internet outages, some are also losing access to free-to-air television using their existing technology.

The changes to free-to-air television will impact about 50,000 Opticomm customers across the country, while internet issues are being felt more widely.

Opticomm says the decommissioning of free-to-air television for some customers is due to the technology "reaching end-of-life" and that it is investing in infrastructure to improve internet reliability.

When Leah Wray and her family moved into a new suburb on the outskirts of Darwin in 2023, she was sold on the promise of it being a "smart community" with top-of-the-line underground technology.

Who are the Australians trying to shut down the world’s biggest coal port?

Climate activists from the Rising Tide organisation have stopped coal ships from reaching Newcastle port – for a day or two. What’s their real objective?

Annabelle* knew before she paddled into the world’s largest coal port that she might be arrested. The 71-year-old arrived in Newcastle on Sunday with thousands of others to join Rising Tide, one of Australia’s largest annual climate protests.

After a signal was given that a coal ship was coming, she entered the port in a kayak with hundreds of others. She managed to paddle beyond yellow buoys that marked the start of a zone the Minns government created for the duration of the protest – which gave police additional powers to arrest people. The police floated on boats just inside the zone, ready to pluck anyone out of the water who might defy their direction to turn back.

Climate protesters in kayaks disrupt operations at Australia port

Australian police say they have arrested dozens of people during climate protests that claim to have halted two cargo ships at one of the world's biggest coal export ports.

Several activists engaged in "unsafe practices" on the water at the Port of Newcastle during the protests, New South Wales state police said.

Climate activist group Rising Tide, which claimed responsibility for the latest protest, said hundreds of activists paddled kayaks into the harbour's shipping lane.

The company behind the country's first orbital rocket called the launch a 'giant leap' despite crashing after only 14 seconds.

The BBC's Katy Watson went to Australia's Ningaloo reef, the site of a mass bleaching event, to find out if the damage can be undone.

On Sunday night, we said goodbye to one of Big Brother‘s most talked-about contestants: Holly Young. Holly Young’s Big Brother eviction left viewers wondering — what will happen to her romance with Colin?

Holly Young, 31, and Colin Ridley, 21, struck up a flirtation early in the season that quickly became one of the show’s central storylines. On reality TV, rule one for dodging early eviction is to strike up a “faux mance”; it gives you a plotline for showrunners to follow and a partner in crime. Many viewers (and housemates) guessed the romance was strategic, at least on Holly’s part. Unfortunately, Colin appeared genuinely besotted.

She attempted to lie down to ease the pain but it became increasingly worse to the point that Siwa felt like she couldn't breathe.

"I laid down, I closed my eyes and I was like I can't breathe. This is really bad," she said in the video.

Siwa then got into a bath which she says "set [the pain] off a hundred times worse".

Beloved pop star rushed to ER after sudden medical emergency

Government unveils Department of Defence overhauls amid delays, blowouts

Richard Marles flagged in June that reforms were on the way for the Department of Defence. (ABC News: Ian Cutmore)

Defence Minister Richard Marles had previously flagged the restructure, declaring in June that "everything was on the table".

Defence currently has a budget of almost $60 billion a year but that figure is set to rise to about $100 billion annually by 2034.

The federal government has unveiled a sweeping overhaul of the Department of Defence as it struggles to fight cost blowouts and major project delays while ramping up spending on the military.

Defence Minister Richard Marles has announced a dedicated independent agency will be established to prioritise delivering projects on time and within budget.

A historic overhaul of the defence bureaucracy has set the stage for a vigorous debate on defence funding among the Albanese government’s most powerful players, as Defence Minister Richard Marles and Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy push their cabinet colleagues for a substantial rise in military spending.

Responsibility for delivering major military projects within budget will be stripped from the Department of Defence, under changes announced on Monday, and handed to a new independent agency in one of the nation’s most significant bureaucratic shake-ups in decades.

New warning for Ozempic-style drugs over risk of suicidal thoughts

The TGA has issued a new safety warning for GLP-1-based drugs including Ozempic. (ABC News: Phil Hemingway)

The Therapeutic Goods Administration has released a new safety alert for glucagon-like peptide-1 medications.

GLP-1-based medications include the likes of Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro, which have increasingly been used to manage type 2 diabetes and obesity.

The TGA says patients taking the affected medicines should tell their doctor if they experience changes in mood or behaviour.

Australia's medicines regulator has issued a safety warning over the potential risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviours when taking Ozempic-style drugs.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) released a safety alert on Monday, saying it had updated product warnings for GLP-1-based drugs to "ensure consistent information regarding the potential risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviours".

The medicines regulator has added two new safety warnings about mental health and contraception for people taking high-profile diabetes and weight loss drugs.

While there is no proof of a causal association, experts say the risks are significant enough that awareness is important as part of a precautionary approach.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) says that because suicidal behaviour and ideation have been reported with these relatively new GLP-1 receptor agonists, doctors should “monitor patients for the emergence or worsening of depression, suicidal thoughts or behaviours, and/or any unusual changes in mood or behaviour”.
