Opinion | Trump's nonstop parties illustrate his circus-style populism

The president is obsessed with the spectacle of power — and has little concern for anything else.

Less than a day after hosting an Ultimate Fighting Championship fight on the White House lawn, President Donald Trump turned his attention to announcing another splashy event: the July 4th event in Washington meant to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary, which Trump says will now be “the most spectacular TRUMP RALLY of them all” and feature the “largest fireworks show in history.”

As MS NOW reported, this event was, according to the organization managing the event, originally intended to celebrate America’s founding and love of country in a nonpartisan manner. The event description made no mention of Trump and promised a “celebration of the people, principles, and patriotic spirit that make the United States the greatest nation in the world.”

Iraq coach Graham Arnold has achieved something at the World Cup no other Australian has

SBS acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country and their connections and continuous care for the skies, lands and waterways throughout Australia.

Australian coach Graham Arnold has steered Iraq's national team back onto the world stage for the first time in 40 years and their second ever appearance in the tournament.

Such is his hero status that football officials tried to get him citizenship, but the story of how he got there is unexpected.

Arnold is the first Australian coach to take teams to two World Cups, guiding the Socceroos to Qatar in 2022 before switching allegiances.

Over the course of 28 months, with eight spent living in Baghdad, he's taken the squad through an arduous 21 qualifying games complicated by grounded flights out of the Middle East.

Iraq head coach Graham Arnold: ‘We’re capable of doing something that will shock the world’ | World Cup 2026

Australian has had to contend with war, 50C heat and playoffs to steer country to a first World Cup in 40 years

Twenty-eight months, 21 games, four rounds, a 117th-minute penalty and a playoff. A coach stuck in Dubai where he watches war start over the water, bombs shaking everything. A team trapped in Baghdad first and Jordan next, missiles flying around them. A scrambled 9,000-mile trip to Mexico where it all rests on one night, the very last country to make it. And, when they do finally land, the hero whose goal took them there is held up by the FBI and the man whose photographs are due to document history is turned back. There may never have been a journey to a World Cup quite like Iraq’s.

Do you have a news tip? Click here to send to our news team.

Residents and business owners in and around a Sunshine Coast suburb are being urged to be vigilant after fire ants were discovered.

The National Fire Ant Eradication Program’s (NFAEP) compliance team found a nest at Kunda Park, outside the containment boundary, on June 9.

The NFAEP stated that the officers acted quickly and destroyed the nest that day.

They were set to carry out eradication activities such as treatment and surveillance to protect the surrounding area.

The NFAEP issued a press release stating that fire ant detections outside the program’s containment boundary are “serious”.

Backyard warning as $2bn invasive threat moves beyond containment zone in Aussie suburbs

Aussies are being urged to inspect their backyards after a dangerous fire ant nest was found outside a containment zone, raising fresh concerns about the spread of a pest that could cost Australia more than $2 billion a year.

Residents across southeast Queensland are being asked to check their properties after the nest was discovered on the Sunshine Coast during routine surveillance.

The nest was detected at Kunda Park on June 9 and treated immediately.

Experts say the deadly discovery reveals the ongoing threat posed by red imported fire ants and the critical role Aussies can play in stopping their spread.

The Invasive Species Council urges locals to take advantage of a key winter detection window, when cooler temperatures force fire ant colonies to build visible mounds above ground to capture sunlight and retain warmth.

With the success of 007 First Light, the future of James Bond is looking bright

For a film series that once felt ubiquitous at the multiplex, James Bond has spent much of the 21st century missing in action.

Five years after No Time to Die gave Daniel Craig a mercifully conclusive farewell, the future of the eponymous super-spy has never felt less certain. The rights to Bond have since been sold, with long-standing franchise stewards Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson ceding control over their family's empire to the newly-formed Amazon MGM Studios.

Underpinning this fallow period is a tension that was frequently lampshaded, but remained unresolved even by the end of Craig's tenure: how do you update a retrograde power fantasy into a contemporary action hero?

007 First Light: The soundtrack secrets of the hit video game

Abbey Road studios, November 2025. Conductor Matt Dunkley is testing the limits of the Chamber Orchestra of London.

They've got just one half-day session to record 32 minutes of music for the new James Bond video game, 007 First Light. And that means four hours of non-stop puffing and blowing.

"It's mostly action music, so if you hate us by the end of it that's totally understandable," composer Alexis Smith warns the musicians as the day begins.

Smith has been working on the score for the past two years with his co-writer Joe Henson (the son of Sherlock actress Una Stubbs).

Today's the day it comes together, as 24 musicians breathe life into the music they penned in their cramped east London studio.

Farmer Wants a Wife has traditionally been a pretty sleepy little show. But this season, Farmer Zac’s contestant, Miranda, is well and truly shaking things up.

Miranda, a 21-year-old real estate professional, has proven to be one of the most formidable contestants in the reality TV franchise’s history. The former competitive swimmer is approaching this traditionally romance-driven series with the absolute ruthlessness of Cersei Lannister, triggering memories of being bullied by water polo players in high school. She’s truly the blonde bombshell from hell in a Réalisation Par-dupe dress.

EXCLUSIVE: Farmer Zac Reveals the exact moment he realised there was ‘more to Miranda’ following on-screen drama

Farmer Wants A Wife has been hinting at drama on Farmer Zac’s property for quite some time, and after his first solo date with Miranda, the cracks have officially begun to show.

Although Zac told WHO he didn’t realise there was drama between the women on his farm until it “was all unfolding”, viewers could sense the fallout from miles away.

The tension peaked when Zac’s twin sister, Isobel, arrived at the farm, and pulled Maya aside to ask if everyone was there for the “right reasons.”

Sydney shark attack victim's arm amputated amid 'long road to recovery'

Leah Stewart's family say her injuries are "severe and life-threatening". (Supplied: Stewart family )

The family of Sydney mother Leah Stewart, who was mauled by a shark last weekend, says she has required the amputation of her arm, with more surgeries scheduled for coming days.

Ms Stewart was bitten while swimming between the flags at Coogee Beach just before 11am on Saturday.

The 35-year-old was taken to St Vincent's Hospital where she remains in a critical condition.

Her family said she sustained "life-threatening" injuries including multiple bites across her arms and legs, lacerations and fractures throughout her body and extreme blood loss.

‘Seismic effect’: How surfers are shifting habits after Coogee shark attack

Veteran surfer Nick Carroll is not one to change his habits following shark attacks after more than 50 years spent chasing waves at Sydney’s beaches.

But the 66-year-old has watched many surfers and swimmers shift their routines in response to a surge in shark encounters: elderly ocean swimmers hugging the shoreline, nervous parents telling their children not to surf for weeks, or experienced board riders becoming extra vigilant when entering the water.

The mauling of 35-year-old swimmer Leah Stewart by a great white shark at Coogee Beach on Saturday has reignited debate about ocean safety measures and prompted many Sydneysiders to rethink their swims and surfs. Some remain unfazed, many take extra precautions and others avoid the water altogether.

A woman is in hospital in a critical condition after being bitten by a shark at Sydney’s Coogee beach, one of Australia’s most popular swimming spots.

The incident follows a series of shark attacks in New South Wales over the summer, prompting concern among beachgoers and renewed debate about how authorities should respond.

On Sunday, the NSW agriculture minister, Tara Moriarty, said the government was taking the situation “very, very seriously” and that “nothing is off the table” as it considers its next steps.

ATP Halle Day 2 Predictions Including Tomas Martin Etcheverry vs Daniil Medvedev

The grass-court season begins to gather pace at ATP Halle, where several established names looking to build momentum on one of the tour’s quickest surfaces will be joined by emerging talents eager to make their mark. With grass rewarding aggressive shot-making, strong serving, and sharp movement, early adaptation can often make the difference. But who will advance?

Alexei Popyrin is a big server who can strike the ball cleanly when in form. The Australian has experience on grass and knows how to use his power in shorter points, though his results this season have been mixed. Raphael Collignon, the rising Belgian, has been playing with plenty of confidence after strong qualifying wins here. His all-court game and recent form on faster surfaces give him the tools to compete, though grass remains relatively new territory for him.

Legendary band Australian Crawl reforms for first time in 40 years

Simon Binks and James Reyne will be part of the reformed Australian Crawl when they play a run of shows later this year. (Supplied)

For the first time in four decades, Australian Crawl, one of the country's most celebrated rock bands, is getting back together.

Original frontman James Reyne will reunite with guitarist Simon Binks and drummer David Reyne for 10 shows in October and November, their first since the band split in 1986.

While James Reyne has continued to perform Australian Crawl material over the years, these shows mark the first time the band has reunited under the name.

Earlier this year, Binks and James Reyne filed a Federal Court application against former drummer Bill McDonough, who had registered trademarks relating to the band's name in the 1990s.

Two legendary Aussie bands reunite 40 years on

Two legendary Australian bands, Australian Crawl and Men At Work, are set to reunite for a series of shows later this year.

The bands will return to the stage as part of this year’s Red Hot Summer Tour festival line-up, which will tour the country from October to November.

In their short career between 1978 and 1986, Australian Crawl delivered enough hits to cement themselves in Aussie rock history, including The Boys Light Up and Reckless.

The performances will mark the first time the original Aussie Crawl line-up – James Reyne, Simon Binks and David Reyne – have performed together in more than 40 years.
