From K-pop to Conan: How the academy is 'leaning into big cultural moments' for the Oscars

LOS ANGELES — An unfiltered Conan O’Brien, a K-pop takeover onstage and absolutely no awards for Tilly Norwood.

This year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is “leaning into big cultural moments,” in the words of CEO Bill Kramer.

Sunday’s Oscars ceremony comes at a period of transition for the academy, which has recently signed a groundbreaking deal with YouTube and is grappling — like the rest of the world — with the impact of AI.

Kramer and academy President Lynette Howell Taylor said in a recent interview with NBC News that they are mindful of the challenges the Oscars face in an ever-changing media landscape and in a year when often bleak headlines have dominated the news cycle.

‘On YouTube, we can reach 2.5bn people at once’: Oscars head Bill Kramer on TV, AI and 4am starts

The Academy CEO on his decidedly non-Hollywood beginnings, bonding with Robert Redford – and a formative watch of All That Jazz

It’s a boiling day in downtown Los Angeles; crowds are milling about outside the Dolby theatre where Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony is to be held, selfie-ing the giant Oscar statuettes.
And this is where the man with whom the buck stops is looking at the set, going through the top-secret opening number and busy with a thousand admin details. Academy CEO, Bill Kramer, increasingly renowned as one of the most important people in Hollywood, meets me for a pre-ceremony chat in a suite in the next-door Hollywood Loews Hotel. “It’s so nice that we’re not on camera!” he says. “Yeah, so happy. Let myself relax!”
He is approachable and diplomatic, revered for his fundraising wizardry at the Academy museum, where he was managing director of external development in 2012 before ascending to his current job at the Academy 10 years later. Kramer has a business degree and came to Columbia after his first substantial job working for the Metropolitan Transit Authority in New York.
It was at a party in the 90s that this policy and financial strategist met the man who changed his life: Robert Redford. “He couldn’t believe how much I knew about movies!” says Kramer. “And he said he wanted to decrease reliance on corporate sponsorships and bring someone on board at Sundance to help generate philanthropic gifts from individuals. Would I be interested in doing that? I said: ‘Sign me up!’”

Running the Oscars is one of those jobs everyone thinks they understand until they realize it is part live television, part diplomacy, part group project with 11,000 voters, and part crisis management. But Lynette Howell Taylor doesn’t sweat it. The British producer behind A Star Is Born, Blue Valentine, and Captain Fantastic was elected president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences last summer, stepping into the role at the exact moment the awards conversation has become louder, faster, and more global than ever.

AFL Team Selection: Round One v Collingwood

Adelaide has named a 23-man team for its Round One match against Collingwood at the MCG on Saturday night.

As the Club revealed on Wednesday, three players will line-up in their first AFL game for the Crows, with Toby Murray, Callum Ah Chee and Lachlan McAndrew all earning a spot in the side.

It will be a memorable moment for Murray, who will play his first senior game alongside his older brother Nick.

Isaac Cumming and James Peatling have recovered from low-grade hamstring injuries sustained during pre-season to be named in the team, while Jake Soligo is also in the line-up after being on a managed training workload due to an irregular heartbeat.

Crows tight-lipped on Daicos plans, ponder ruck change

Matthew Nicks was keeping mum on ways Adelaide will try quell the influence of gun Magpie

ADELAIDE coach Matthew Nicks is keeping his cards close to his chest as he prepares to dull the influence of a red-hot Nick Daicos in Saturday night's clash with Collingwood.

The Magpies superstar dismantled St Kilda with 41 disposals, seven marks and four clearances at the weekend, and will again be a pivotal figure as last year's minor premiers open their 2026 campaign.

Nicks said the Crows had enormous respect for Daicos but remained coy on what plans he would employ to keep the three-time All-Australian under wraps.

Amanda Bynes displays 30-pound Ozempic weight loss during rare Los Angeles outing with boyfriend Zachary Khan

Amanda Bynes was spotted in Los Angeles on Tuesday showcasing a noticeable physical transformation during a rare public outing with her boyfriend, Zachary Khan.

The 39-year-old actress, best known for her roles in What a Girl Wants and She's the Man, has lost approximately 30 pounds, which she has attributed to the Type 2 diabetes medication Ozempic. The injectable drug has become widely used off-label for weight loss purposes in recent years.

Bynes and Khan were photographed leaving a Goodwill store together, with the former child star dressed casually in white and sporting bleached blonde hair pulled back. Her slimmer appearance marks a significant change from previous years.

Amanda Bynes showed off her 30lb weight loss during a rare outing in Los Angeles this week.

The 39-year-old former actress tends to keep her romance with boyfriend Zachary Khan under the radar, but they stuck together on Wednesday while taking care of errands around the city.

Bynes has been open about taking the popular weight-loss drug Ozempic as she could be seen on her latest outing donning a casual black tank top with long spaghetti straps.

The former Nickelodeon star contrasted the dark top with an unusual pair of high-waisted acid wash jeans that looked as if they had been ripped down the seams, then sewn back together in thick strands.

Warriors Make Al Horford Announcement Before Jazz Game

The Golden State Warriors will once again lean heavily on Draymond Green in the frontcourt after two veteran big men were ruled out ahead of Monday night’s matchup with the Utah Jazz.

Veteran center Al Horford will sit out due to left toe injury management, according to the NBA’s official injury report. He joins Kristaps Porziņģis on the sidelines, with the Latvian big man also ruled out because of illness management.

The simultaneous absences leave Golden State thin in the frontcourt and force coach Steve Kerr to rely once again on Green to anchor the interior as the Warriors try to keep pace in the tightly packed Western Conference playoff race.

Controversy at Women's Asian Cup after former coach leads 'Taiwan' chant

Social media videos show the former coach orchestrating supporters in a chant of "Taiwan: add oil!" — which loosely translates to "let's go Taiwan!"

      (X: @yaozhang02)

The Women's Asian Cup has been embroiled in another diplomatic controversy, with Taiwanese officials lodging a complaint after a former national coach was ejected from a stadium for leading a chant that included the word "Taiwan."

The incident has raised political tensions ahead of tomorrow's high profile quarter-final clash between China and Chinese Taipei — the name Taiwan competes under due to Asian Football Confederation rules.

Social media videos show Chen Kuei-jen orchestrating fellow supporters in a chant of "Taiwan: add oil!" — a Chinese language phrase which loosely translates to "let's go Taiwan!" — during its group stage match against India at Parramatta Stadium this week.

China coach tells players to stay ‘calm’ in Taiwan clash at Asian Cup

China face Taiwan in a highly charged quarterfinal at the Women’s Asian Cup, which already has a political focus.

China coach Ante Milicic urged his players to remain “calm and confident” in Saturday’s charged Women’s Asian Cup quarterfinal against Taiwan.

The reigning champions are targeting a record-extending 10th continental title but are wary of an opponent that has shown improvement as the tournament has progressed.

Taiwan were beaten 2-0 by strongly fancied Japan in the group phase but were by no means outclassed.

“They gave Japan a very difficult game and then went on to win their next two matches, so we know this will be a tough proposition,” said Milicic ahead of the clash in Perth.

Tigers reward Doueihi ahead of major positional switch

Wests Tigers have signalled their belief in Adam Doueihi's move to halfback by rewarding the playmaker with a two-year contract extension.

The Tigers announced on Friday, a little more than 24 hours ahead of their season opener with North Queensland, that Doueihi had penned a deal that will keep him at Concord until the end of 2029.

Only Alex Twal and Sione Fainu, whose deals also expire in 2029, are signed as long as Doueihi.

The new contract is a huge showing of faith from both parties given the Tigers' struggles under Benji Marshall and Doueihi's luckless run with injuries.

Newspaper headlines: Epstein files photo 'bombshell' and 'Iran war spirals'

The Times reports that poorer households will be offered targeted support to protect them from large rises in their energy bills because of the conflict in the Middle East. Chancellor Rachel Reeves has told the paper that the Treasury is drawing up "different options".

The i Weekend says one of the ideas attracting the most favour in Westminster is a freeze on fuel duty. According to the Guardian, there will be help for the estimated 1.7 million people in the UK reliant on heating oil – which is not covered by Ofgem's price cap.

"Wall St fears ever rising oil price", is Financial Times Weekend's lead. The paper says the cost of a barrel will "ratchet sharply higher" if the war in Iran and the protracted shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz "choke off exports for months". The Daily Telegraph says oil prices settled to $100 a barrel yesterday, but analysts fear costs could surge to $150, overtaking the price peak of the 2008 financial crisis.

How Mercedes stole a march to dominate F1 season opener and why it may continue

George Russell and Kimi Antonelli took a one-two win in Australia and team’s ability to master dark art of energy management is paying off

As Formula One grapples with its new, controversial regulations, there is consensus at least that Mercedes are expected to be on top once more in the second race of the season on Sunday in Shanghai. The team have a fearsome car but most importantly in a formula dominated by the engine, appear to have also stolen a march in optimising the dark art of energy management.

George Russell and Kimi Antonelli claimed a one-two at the opening round in Australia last weekend. In qualifying Russell was eight-tenths quicker than Mercedes’ nearest rival, the Red Bull of Isack Hadjar and in the grand prix itself finished 15 seconds in front of third-placed Charles Leclerc having eased up in the final third of the race.

‘Mercedes are back’ – Wolff ecstatic with Australia 1-2 but admits ‘we have a fight on our hands’ with Ferrari

Mercedes executed the best possible start to the season as George Russell and Kimi Antonelli placed first and second at the Australian Grand Prix.

Team Principal Toto Wolff has declared that “Mercedes are back” after George Russell and Kimi Antonelli brought home a 1-2 for the squad in Australia, but conceded that they could be in for a tense competition with Ferrari.

The 2026 season kicked off at Albert Park with the pecking order an unknown, but the Brackley outfit quickly established themselves as the frontrunner after Russell claimed pole position with Antonelli lining up alongside him – the gap between the Briton’s lap time and Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar in third was a dominant eight-tenths.

Still sandbagging? Why Mercedes F1 car may be even faster than we've seen

From an Australian GP win to sprint qualifying pole in China – but could Russell go even faster?

On the eve of the second race of the new F1 there’s a lot to ponder on. Not only how the formula looks around a Shanghai track very different in its energy demands from those of Albert Park last weekend, but also in the competitive pattern.

In Australia a small Mercedes W17 pace advantage, once Ferrari snapped the elastic Charles Leclerc was using to prevent George Russell pulling clear, was quite evident even if it was not as big as in qualifying. But forget for a moment Ferrari’s strategic goof and ponder how much of Merc’s real pace Russell and Kimi Antonelli were using once in clear air. Were they driving to a broad instruction of disguising the extent of their superiority? So as to minimise the chances of rival power unit manufacturers being measured at 3% or more behind, the threshold which will trigger them extra allowances under the ADUO (Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities) policy after six races?
