Eileen Gu: The Winter Olympian who earns $23m a year — but just $100k of it from her sport – The Athletic

An outlier lies among the list of Forbes’ 2025 world’s highest-paid female athletes.

Tennis star Coco Gauff tops the list, earning an estimated $33 million, followed by her peers Aryna Sabalenka ($30m) and Iga Swiatek ($25.1m) but then appears Eileen Gu. The leading trio are household sporting names, freestyle skier Gu is not, but her earnings? $23.1m.

Every year since the 22-year-old won two gold medals and silver at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in the big air, halfpipe and slopestyle — making her the youngest Olympic champion in freestyle skiing aged 18 — she has ranked in the top five highest-paid female athletes.

Gu Ai-ling (22, American name Eileen Gu), a two-time winner of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, who was at the crossroads of life and death due to a cerebral hemorrhage during the game, succeeded in returning after 10 months of rehabilitation. Despite the nationality controversy raised in China and the United States, he will represent China at the 2026 Milan-Cortina D'Ampezzo Winter Olympics.

Chinese media Sohu Dotcom reported on the 3rd (Korea Standard Time) that "Gu Ai-ling was in a state of shock for five minutes due to a cerebral hemorrhage during the Winter X Games held in Aspen, USA in January last year. At that time, Gu Ai-ling even showed epilepsy symptoms and was in critical condition."

Laneway Festival Unveils 2026 Merch Designs & Prices

Laneway Festival begins at Western Springs in Auckland, New Zealand today, and before this year’s highly anticipated event began, organisers unveiled the festival merch designs and prices.

The merch designs and prices were revealed in a social media post yesterday (4 February), with Melbourne pop band Blusher modelling the options. Note that the merch revealed so far is only Laneway Festival related – acts on the bill will likely bring their own merch, too, but those designs haven’t been shared yet.

Merch this year is colourful and fun, with some shirts inspired by headliner Chappell Roan’s gothic fairytale spectacle theme. Punters can get their hands on Laneway Festival singlets, oversized soccer shirts, white, black, pink and yellow t-shirts, bandanas, hoodies, caps, and bucket hats, plus tote bags and keychains.

Atlassian (NASDAQ:TEAM) will be announcing earnings results this Thursday afternoon, according to a recent financial report. The collaboration software company exceeded analysts' revenue expectations by 2.2% last quarter, reporting revenues of $1.43 billion, which was up 20.6% year on year. However, it was a slower quarter, with full-year revenue guidance missing analysts' expectations significantly and a significant miss of analysts' billings estimates.

This quarter, analysts are expecting Atlassian's revenue to grow 19.9% year on year to $1.54 billion, slowing from the 21.4% increase it recorded in the same quarter last year. Adjusted earnings are expected to come in at $1.14 per share. Analysts covering the company have generally reconfirmed their estimates over the last 30 days. Atlassian has a history of exceeding Wall Street's expectations, beating revenue estimates every single time over the past two years by 2.9% on average.

Sean Baker and Michelle Yeoh’s ‘Sandiwara,’ From Fashion House Self-Portrait, to Premiere at Berlin Film Festival

Sean Baker and Michelle Yeoh‘s “Sandiwara,” a film made in collaboration with the London-based fashion house Self-Portrait, is set to world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival later this month.

As Variety first reported back in December, in “Sandiwara” the “Anora” director returns to his iPhone-shooting roots for what is described in a press release as an “immersive cinematic experience.” It marks the first film from Self-Portrait’s Residency program, which launched last year with the aim of inviting creatives “from all disciplines into the brand to design using their own distinctive style,” the release states. The initiative provides Self-Portrait’s “infrastructure, platforms, resources, teams and distribution network to spotlight and promote external creatives, offering them the freedom to dream and create.”

This year’s 12th edition of the Scary Movies festival at Film at Lincoln Center premiered Ari Aster’s extended version of “Midsommar” this past Saturday.

The 2026 Berlin Film Festival begins next Thursday, and today we got a surprise announcement.

Sean Baker will be present to present Michelle Yeoh with the festival’s Honorary Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement. Why Baker? Well, apparently he shot a secret film with Yeoh, produced by London fashion house Self-Portrait — it’s titled “Sandiwara.”

Now, although the press release does not mention whether this is a short film, one would guess it is. Then again, how short? Given the synopsis, this one could run as long as 30 minutes, maybe more.

Alert issued for dangerous tropical cyclone off WA coast

A cyclone warning has been issued for a huge stretch of the State’s north west coast as a tropical low intensifies over the Kimberley.

Residents from Exmouth to Onslow have been urged to prepare for wind gusts this weekend of up to 120km/h, heavy rainfall and possible flash flooding.

The Bureau of Meteorology advice advises that the low is heading west over the central Kimberley area, and is expected to move offshore on Friday.

Once offshore, it is expected to develop into a cyclone, track parallel to the Pilbara coast and then potentially turn towards the coast south of Exmouth.

Katherine River reaches highest level in five years, with more rain forecast

The Katherine River has reached its highest level in five years at 15.3 metres.

The river peaked just shy of the 16-metre minor flood level, which hasn't happened since the last flood in 2006.

The weather bureau says the situation could change again, with more rain forecast over the next 48 hours.

Residents in the Top End town of Katherine are being urged to check their flood kits and make plans in case the river rises again, after it peaked about 70 centimetres below flood levels on Monday afternoon.

Alexandra Eala showed her staying power in Abu Dhabi, coming back from a set down and a 4–0 deficit in the third set, saving a match point to defeat Aliaksandra Sasnovich and reach the quarterfinals.

Alexandra Eala pulled off a late comeback Wednesday night in Abu Dhabi, rallying past Aliaksandra Sasnovich to reach the quarterfinals after a three-set battle on Stadium Court.

Eala dropped the opening set in front of a heavily pro-Filipino crowd but broke in the final game of the second set to force a decider. From there, she erased a 4–0 deficit and saved a match point before closing out a 2–6, 6–4, 7–6 (5) win in nearly three hours.

Nintendo Direct is happening this week, so it's time to round up all our speculation about what the games giant will unveil.

The livestream will air on Nintendo's YouTube Channel at 6am PT/9am ET on Thursday, Feb. 5. It's listed as a Nintendo Direct partner showcase for third-party games, which means the likelihood of seeing any first-party Nintendo games is pretty low, if not zero.
